There is a special hair-dye remover product you can buy at places like Sally. Put it on cotton and it helps get it off your skin. Of course, wiping it off so it doesn't stain your skin in the first place is a big help, too.

When I was still coloring my hair (about 1 1/2- 2 years ago), I would apply vaseline around hairline and tops of ears and then keep a washcloth handy. I didn't worry too much about my scalp. I am so glad I finally just decided to go ahead and let my silver hair show but I was over 57 when I decided t go natural and had been coloring it since my mid twenties.

I'm blessed to have a really deep laundry sink in my utility room, so that's where all home hair coloring gets done. I used to color my hair with Clairol Natural Instincts, which wasn't too difficult to clean up afterwards. However, my white hairs are so resistant to color that they'd show up again after just a couple of shampoos. It was frustrating, so I went for a year or so without coloring my hair at all. When I got my highlights done at the salon, the stylist put 18 foils in my hair but only charged me for 14. I ended up paying $40, and she said I'll have to go back every 3 months. At that rate, having highlights done professionally at the salon by my favorite stylist will only cost me slightly more than messing with the Clairol at home each and every month and not being happy with the white hairs not covered. If I go back to coloring my hair at home, I will most definitely switch to permanent color.

BTW, we keep a wet washcloth handy, and we have an old bath towel reserved solely for coloring hair.

Hope this helps! Good luck.

I graduated to permanent color about 6 years ago - the semi just didn't cover the gray anymore. I like Revlon ColorSilk better than other brands. I like how the foam applied in the John Frieda kit but found it didn't last long color wise.
For removing color, I use a baby wipe, facial cleanser wipe or just a damp tissue. Once you rinse the color off and then condition, most of the spots on your skin go away. You can pick up a color remover lotion at beauty supply store too - one bottle would last forever.

With short hair like yours, you won't need to use the whole bottle of mixed color so don't try to use it all and you will have less drips

When I used box dyes, I preferred semi-permanent also --- they don't end up with the same rigid demarcation line, and they seemed to have more colour variance on strands after washing so it didn't look so flat. I liked ColourSpa and Natural Instincts in the dark brown one shade above black.

Now though I have been using henna, which I like much better, even though it takes longer to do. I am ejoying the red at the moment, but I think I might start experimenting with henna and indigo together to go back to my preferred darker brown.

In both cases, after application I take a facecloth and wipe off any smears/streaks on my face, neck and ears.

I use Natural Instincts, which is semi-permanent. It works well and doesn't stain my skin.

I make my husband or daughter check me every ten minutes, then wipe away the blobs. Old color tends to get drippy; I learned not to have more than three boxes in my house at any one time. I never pay full price since Sunday coupons and drug store sales are frequents, at least on the mainland.

My hair is quite different than yours; it is a coarse as a broom with hard to color gray. It is hard to destroy, esp. because I keep it short. I like Excellence by l'Oreal, especially the applicator which is like a comb with holes at the base instead of the usual long cone like a picnic ketchup/mustard bottle.

I now use the conditioner that comes with the Excellence to *shampoo* my hair. Keeps it clean and better looking than regular shampoo.

Last weekend, I used Healthy Look, a semi-permanent color by l'Oreal. It has terrible reviews on Makeup Alley, but I bought it before I read them. I thought semi-permanent might be better for transitioning to gray this fall since it is supposed to eventually wash out, but who knows. It looks the same on me as the Excellence (black), but I think the complaints came from those with lighter hair.

I did my most recent color for the first time in years this last time. I used this John Frieda foam color which is a newer brand I believe. It was really miles better to apply than what I'd used in the past. The foam really helps it to go on evenly. It was super easy to apply and the smell was even nice.

I'm a henna girl, and don't really worry too much about staining around my hairline. A little vinegar helps with that. I prefer semi-permanent color because it's less obvious as your roots grow out.

Henna is very natural looking but a huge mess to do and not always consistent.

I have very dark hair too. I use Vaseline too. Even on the top of my ears. I recommend using a toothbrush to brush the color through the finer/tinier hair around your face and ears and your part. I use Clairol Nice and Easy. Since my hair is so dark, I tend to do a root touch up every other coloring. That is easier on my hair. This may even be enough since you have short hair. Good Luck !!!!

I home coloured my hair for years. I second Traci's suggestion to keep a wet washcloth handy - as soon as you notice colour on your scalp. wipe it off. If you get it soon enough, it won't stain. If you do notice a stain after you're done your colouring, nail polish remove on a cotton ball can get quite a bit of it off.

I found Clairol lasted the longest but agree that Feria is good quality as well.

You do get better at it with practice.

1. I keep a wet washcloth on hand and wipe any smears off the forehead and ears as soon as they happen.
2. I like Feria, but I honestly don't find much difference between the $8-10/box brands.

I just started coloring my hair(I am only forty but getting some greys already) and don't really want to keep going to the salon. Here are few questions i have about doing it at home:
1) how do you keep the color off your scalp? Lot of stylists I have seen use Vaseline as a base around your hairline. What do you do at home? As you can see, I have dark hair so getting dark color all over my forehead and sides is a definate concern
2) which brands have given you good results with color at home?
