Angie- that is so true. Foxy has really short legs, so it's particularly difficult.

Una- electric fence just isn't an option, since we will be moving.

Meredith- we're not really sure, but I'm thinking around a year.

Andres- thanks for those recommendations- I will be watching those videos.

Kappy- thanks for your experience.

Foxy is so cute!!!! Our dog is also a true houdini. He's a shelter dog; he escaped and was picked up by animal control so many times that his prior owner told the shelter to just keep him one time. I guess she got tired of paying the fines to pick him up. After we adopted him, he would get out 2 or 3 times a day. We quickly realized we needed to fix the problem!

One thing that worked for us was keeping a leash on him at all times. He dragged it behind him at home. He behaved better when "on the leash", and it gave us a much easier way to catch him (someone could usually grab the leash if he was running out the door). We used a super thick leash with some weight (and he's a fairly small dog). We did have to take him to some training (we tried a class first, but decided we aren't very good at training so we sent him away for a week). He doesn't need the leash anymore.

We also made a point, as a family, of knowing where the dog is before we open the door. If we tell him to stay or sit before we open the door he will.

Hope you don't mind if I share a pic of Zippy and his "killer dog" leash. Don't worry we don't normally "dress" him up; my daughter found this Santa outfit at Target for $2.50 and used her own money to buy it. He was a good sport and tolerated it for Christmas.

Hey Chewy,

Feel free to PM me, like Angie said, this is what I do. I do have a few suggestions for you, but the "better" ones will take some training chops on your part so getting into a class or privates might be a good idea.

How old is your little sweetie? My whippet Reilly started trying to go out the door around 6 months old but he got over it really quick when he saw how upset mama got.

Electric fence? Though they can be expensive, for a small area it might be worth it...

Random Thoughts (Andrea) is a dog trainer by profession. PM her!

Foxy is SO CUTE!!

It's harder to toilet train little doggies because you can't see them crouch.

Foxy's latest trick is sneaking out the front door whenever it is open and running down the street. We are in the process of crate training, but it's been a slow and tedious process for us. Luckily, she stops to pee everywhere so that we can catch her, but I'm not sure how to deal with this behavior. It's brand new over the last couple of days, and she's so tiny that we don't see her behind us- we always check before opening the door. This can't continue, though!
Anyone have any experience with this or suggestions?
