I have a bit of dry mouth myself, and suck on ice chips ... I don't know if this would help you if there was a burn though! Good luck

Gosh, I hadn't heard of that but it sounds awfully uncomfortable and annoying. I hope that you are able to nail down a solution!

Since last fall, I am perpetually dry and scratchy in the throat with a permanent hacking cough, and it's even worse at this time of year due to seasonal pollen allergies. I can't genuinely laugh without breaking down into a cough! I was wondering why the heck I was so dry, as I drink water and tea ALL THE TIME, until I looked at the side effects of my sleeping pills, and sure enough, there it is. (I'd far rather have a dry mouth than the horrible insomnia I struggled with last summer, though.)

I find that B vitamins help when I sometimes have this thing that the corners of my mouth get very dry and crack. Also, do you possibly have congestion that causes you to mouth breath when you are sleeping? That could really aggravate the dry mouth condition.

Im SO sorry to hear this! I have dry mouth syndrome (from my meds) and know what a pain it is to deal with If you like some candy, Werthers seems to last longest and is really good. I drink lots of water, need to have some overnight also...are you on any meds? Sometimes its a bad side effect, like with me. Just be sure and keep liquids nearby, all the time- good luck!

Thanks, Sona (and Meredith). I always thought the terms were kind of interchangeable. It's really a little-known syndrome. The klonopin was a ridiculous treatment and I got off it within days after reading about how addictive it was. I've heard about b vitamins and possibly it could be related to yeast overgrowth in the body. Who knows? I'm one of these people who get all sorts of weird auto-immune things, but this has outlasted most of the others.

Mochi,
I haven't ever experienced that but I do hear that it is very unpleasant. It sounds like you are already sucking on mints etc to try to keep some moisture in your mouth. The things our bodies do to us as we go through menopause! I wish I knew of some other types of treatment but I can only say I hope this is just a temporary phase.

I have many patients with dry mouth but none with burning mouth. Do you take a B vitamin daily? several of the B vitamins play an integral role in mouth, lip and tongue issues. Try taking a B complex if you don't already. Also artificial saliva can help some people. Nancy what you are describing sounds awful. Hope this current episode is short-lived.

I probably should have picked another time besides the Friday of a holiday weekend, and may re-post this some time later. I'm just feeling blah and didn't want to wait.

So the past 7-8 years I've had this weird condition called Dry Mouth or Burning Mouth syndrome. It is completely harmless, and I feel bad even complaining about it, but it somehow manages to make things unpleasant for me on and off. It's said to be hormonal, and affects mostly women who are middle-aged or older. There's not really a set protocol for dealing with it. Years back I went to one doctor who gave me a scrip for Klonopin, which is a dangerous drug.

I basically do nothing about it. It comes and goes, but when it's "on" (like right now), it tastes like I'm sucking on a mouthful of pennies. I consume way too many altoids! (And I"m adding that my tongue does have that "burnt" feel to it--like you get after burning your tongue on a hot cup of tea.) Again, it's nothing in the larger sense, just one of those things that manages to be annoying, but I wish I had a way of eliminating or lessening its frequency.

Is anyone else here familiar with it? I'm thinking of asking my acupuncturist about it (his English is okay, but I wish I knew the Chinese words for it). If any of you have successfully managed it, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks.
