Memory foam is too hot for me. I also wriggle a lot in my sleep and so I find it to be too sinky.

I have a firm natural latex mattress. It's truly amazing and it is great for those who have a sensitivity to dust. Worth every penny.

Good timing with this post as i am also researching mattresses. We bought a Starwood hotel mattress a few years ago and it worked very well for us. I am looking for a slightly harder mattress now and found Ikea has several nice ones.

My memory foam had a bad smell to it too; I just stuck it outside with some bricks on the corners for a few days and it was gone. :)

Medusa, touche! I was specifically referring to polybrominated diphenyl ethers or PBDEs, which are added so many of the things we use everyday, especially in the US and Canada. More information about them is available here (among other places): http://www.ewg.org/reports/mothersmilk, http://www.ewg.org/reports/pbdesintoddlers, and http://www.ewg.org/EWGs-commen.....-for-PBDEs

I've got a Verlo that we've had for almost 10 years now and we've been very happy with it. I love that we could decide how soft we wanted it to be (we went for extra soft). We didn't get the pillow top, but the ours is plush - almost as much stuffing at the top as the pillow top, but it still rounds off at the edges so we can use regular sheets.

We have a Tempurpedic as well and I would highly recommend it. As Brenda mentioned, the Tempurpedic molds to your body, and senses your body heat. It is *not* hard. It might feel hard initially, when you first lay down on it, but it will soften up after you lay on it for a few minutes (due to your body heat). My boyfriend has an incredibly bad back and shoulder, and the Tempurpedic is his favorite bed ever. He is particularly sensitive to hard mattresses and cannot sleep in a hard bed at all as they exacerbate his injuries and pain to the point that he can't function (we have to do tons of research before reserving a hotel room, because even the nicest hotels may have bad mattresses).

We have the most basic version of Tempurpedic. We purchased it about eight years ago, when they didn't have many options at all. Even though ours is the thinnest and is eight years old, there are no indentations or any kind of damage at all.

Let's see.... Tempurpedic feels different because it's memory foam. It takes a few seconds for it to adjust to fit you after you move. It doesn't have an instant reaction like regular mattresses. So when you roll over, the curve of your body shape stays behind you for a few seconds and you sink back into the mattress again. It sinks slightly to fit you perfectly. We've had ours at least 5 years and it still springs back as soon as we get up or move.

One great thing about memory foam is that when one partner adjusts, the whole bed doesn't move. I love that. The bed only adjusts to the person who moves. I've slept on beds that would do the shimmy if one of us rolled over... no more!

On the sweating, your mileage may vary but we've never had a problem with that. Hubby and I are both hot sleepers and do fine. I have a thick regular mattress pad and cotton sheets on ours and don't sweat at all. I think laying right on top of the mattress would be sweaty, but with sheets etc. it works for us.

Maybe the prices have gone up since we got ours. But we didn't find it to be that expensive compared to the other mattresses in the store. There were many higher end mattresses from reputable brands that were twice the Tempurpedic price. Again, your mileage may vary.

Just a warning, if you get one you'll want to leave the windows open a bit for a few days. It does need to off-gas like other mattresses and ours was pretty smelly at first. Within a couple of weeks the smell was pretty much gone and it hasn't been a problem since.

This sounds corny, but we have a Marriott mattress. When we were looking for a new mattress, we wanted to actually try sleeping a few nights on what we were going to get because that seemed the only way to really tell if we would both like it, so we went to stay at a Marriott for the weekend. We've had it for at least three years now, and it's still the most comfortable bed I've slept on. I always look forward to getting back home because I miss my bed.

I actually had one of those, Medusa, but it did not retain its shape at all and actually ended up being VERY uncomfortable...to a point where I was getting aches and sore spots. Do you know of a good one? Maybe the one I had was just bad quality.

I love love love memory foam mattresses. Switching to one of these has been wonderful. Personally I wouldn't get a tempurpedic because they're (a) really expensive and (b) really firm - I like something more squishy that I can sink into. If you like a really hard mattress then a tempurpedic might work for you.

We have this mattress, which is a softer, less expensive tempurpedic knock off:
http://www.foamsource.com/shop/product/37
After 5+ years of use it looks/feels just like when we bought it.

Also, not to nitpick but, um, ALL mattresses are made of chemicals. Mattresses are nothing but chemicals, since chemicals are the basis of all matter. If a mattress didn't contain chemicals it would be nothing but vacuum (empty space).

Memory foam is definitely really smelly when you first get it. You will probably want to open up the mattress and let it air out for a while before using it. I aired out ours for about a month (I'm pretty sensitive to smells.)

Maya - it's possible to get memory-foam mattress toppers that aren't super expensive but that make a bed much much more comfortable. We tried one of these before getting our mattress to see if we would really like memory foam.

I don't own one but have a story about one. At the bar one Sunday I had a tourist come in and tell me he was so excited to see his hotel had a Tempurpedic because he loved his one at home. Well, he did a kind of swan dive onto it only to find out when they are cold (this is snow country) they are like a brick. Hurt himself good with that little move!

Adding to what MNsara said, the US requires flame retardants be added to most mattresses. There are some chemical-free options out there, but it will take some research if this is something you're interested in. From what I've found, Ikea doesn't use chemicals in their mattresses in other countries (to meet strict standards in some European countries) but is required to add fire retardants to US mattresses.

My parents both have Tempurpedic mattresses and I am incredibly envious. I don't sleep well in general, and I have a terrible mattress which only adds to my problems. Theirs are so much more comfortable. No pressure points.

I'm moving soon and will thankfully be getting a new mattress, but odds are it will still be uncomfortable. I can't afford a Tempurpedic.
