I enjoy the show and the style -- plus, it's refreshing to see an actress (Joan/Christina Hendricks) who is not a size two and with a body not too different from my own. And don't even get me started on Jon Hamm (fans self).

I don't really seek out fashion from that era for my day to day wear, but I have a couple of pieces that make a nod to retro. I was born in '65 so my early clothing memories are more from the 70s.

My BF's mother (76 yrs old) loves the show because it reminds her of working back in those days and exactly what they wore and how everyone smoked, etc. Even my BF has moments of nostalgia at certain things they capture just right (he was born in 1960). I enjoy watching but don't have any reference point being born in 1970.

That makes sense YS. I am not a fan of 50's style, at least not the styles represented on the show. Everyone looks like a housewife or the naughty secretary who is having an affair with the husband of the housewife (it sounds like this is actually how much of the plot plays out too...).

Maya, the fun 60s fashion really came later in the decade, like 1966 and after. Mad Men is set around 1960 and (so far) a few years after and still has some 50s flavor. Back then, a few years could indeed make a huge difference in terms of what people wore!

I do not watch the show but another blog I read regularly posts commentary analyzing the outfits.

I'm sorry to say I find it phenomenally frumpy and boring. The 60's had so much FUN fashion, and very little of it is on display from what I have seen. I do not understand what all the fuss is about.

So after a marathon day in front of the TV, I have just watched the entire first season of Mad Men!! (All 10 hours!)

WOW - the fashion is very inspiring!

Joan - OMG - she is just so gorgeous, her style is fabulous and boy, I love her sass!! I could totally see me glamming up like her for a night out.

Peggy - at the start her style was kind of cute, I thought she was pregnant when she put on weight, but that doesn't seem to be the case! ETA I first posted mid way through the last episode - I knew something was up!!!!

Betty - well, her demure femininity and perfect polish is just sublime! (And probably the style I could see me integrating the most).

I felt like I could relate in some way to each of the female characters which made it seem a little more do-able.

The things I loved the most:

Betty's fitted bodices and full skirts (not that I could do the petticoats LOL)
Joan's perfectly fitted dresses - WOW
The boxy cropped, short sleeve jackets over the shift dresses worn by some of the others.
The hats and gloves!
The brooches!
And of course... Mr Don Draper... *swooon*

Actually the boxy jackets REALLY appealed to me so I can't wait to whip some up if it ever cools down here :)

So now that I'm up with the program, I'd love to know what your thoughts of the fashion of Mad Men are! Love it? Hate it?

(BTW the Pete character scares the bejeezus out of me!)
