I generally avoid conversations on diets because I am very passionate about feeding your body the food it needs to thrive and avoiding the filler that does nothing for us. I am a paleo/primal eater, and if you are interested, I recommend the sites Amy suggested, plus The Clothes Make The Girl (blog) and The Paleo Solution by Rob Wolff.
No longer do I fight food or get an irritated tummy or feel bloated. I am leaner, fitter, healthier, and happier than ever.
I think most diets set you up to fail, and that just shouldn't be fair. Life is too short to struggle when you could be free. You just have to decide for yourself when you are ready. I promise you won't regret it!

Just for fun (inspired by Patty's how much do we need comment)

Question: how many pints of milk a week for the following family:
Husband and wife
2 grown up sons from husband's first marriage
3 young children from this marriage all under 10 at time

Husband and grown up sons work as crofters in Scotland - so think outside in all weathers, fishing, working the land, doing their own repairs to buildings etc.

Answer: 100 pints of full fat milk.
REALLY! And none of them overweight.
(although I think cholesterol may be a different issue)

About how much we, my family, eats--I often ask why we need so much in a serving--it's not like we're working like 10 men planting acres of potatoes today! Slaying zombies is not the same thing!!!!

I've been thinking about this and can't help myself adding my (unscientific and wordy) 2c.

Two things about diet interest me in particular. One is looking at how different ways of cooking have developed. For example (and do jump on me if I'm wrong about this) Indian foods using spices to help flavour and preserve meats that might go off in hot weather, Eastern cultures using flavours to help eke out small amounts of protein and give interest to a diet of veg and rice, lots of European cooking developed to maximise fat - think of the classic English roast dinner with potatoes roasted in lard and rich puddings afterwards.

But when we cook and eat now, we don't have a sense of context. In England we eat the same types of foods when we don't need that amount of energy either for physical activity or for warmth (we all have central heating now). If we eat Indian or Chinese food we will often expect the protein sizes we are used to in classic English cooking but with all of the carbs on top (that were the main part of the diet when the cookery style developed).

The second part about diets that interests me (I've read a book by Patrick Holford called Nutrition and the Mind) is how all of the different things in you eat are used by the body. So a single vitamin might not seem very important on its own but it is the presence of that that might enable essential processes within the body. Which makes me think, we must be careful when we tinker with our diets and particularly when we exclude things from our diet (we really have to know what we are doing).

I am coming round to the 'sugar is poison' point of view too (not that it has made me cut out sugar from my diet...). You can observe the effects of this by how you feel about 30 mins after something very sugary. Not good!

Anyway, I've enjoyed reading the informed views of everyone (I think you know more than I do!).

FWIW, I love the honey yogurt by Greek Gods but treat it more like dessert. It has a lot of sugar in it. But YUM!!

Our favorite yogurt is Nancy's honey yogurt. I buy it in bulk from Azure. It almost tastes plain so we add our own sweetening to it, usually maple syrup or brown sugar. We don't add a lot and end up with a lot less sugar than regular sugared yogurts.

I'm with Jonesy about different areas of the world having different diets. An interesting book that discusses that is The Jungle Effect (linked below).

If I'm trying to sort out any sort of health info I will often look to longitudinal studies, ideally ones that are large in scale and include a wide range of ethnicities.

While the "7 Countries Studies" has a major flaw -- only men were included! -- it spawned many related studies.

My layperson's reading is why I have tried to follow the Mediterranean Diet for ~ 20 years now, though a traditional Japanese diet also scores very well in terms of low rates of heart disease and cancer.

My HDL and taste buds seem happy with it and my weight stays pretty stable, so I'll stick with it for another 20 unless things change. [Though I am eternally trying to add more fruits/veg and lower my cheese consumption!]

Study overview from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health: http://www.sph.umn.edu/epi/history/overview.asp

Random synopsis:

>The [1960s] 7 countries study instigated by Professor Ancel Keys documented the diets of 13,000 middle-aged men aged 40-59 living in Southern Italy, Greece (Crete, Corfu), Yugoslavia, Finland, Netherlands, Japan and US (about 70% of the men lived in rural areas).

>This study showed clearly that populations who ate the most saturated fat (Finland) had the highest levels of blood cholesterol and the most Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). This study also awakened the interest that the Cretan and Japanese diets may be related to the lower incidence of CHD and colon, prostate and breast cancer in these countries.

If you have an hour and a half--here's a chemical analysis of High /fructose Corn Syrop (our processed food sweetner of choice) and how our bodies process it- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

Cutting back on carbohydrates has more health implications than just weight loss. In general (there are individual variations) cutting carbohydrates will lead to a large decrease in blood triglycerides (fat); and increasing saturated fat in one's diet will lead to increased HDL - the protective lipoproteins, both of which are directly related to reducing heart disease risk, far more than weight, BMI, body fat percentage, etc.

After decades of hearing about "healthy-whole-grains" and "artery-clogging-saturated-fats" it can be hard to hear that those are just myths. Gary Taubes' books are excellent resources full of the references and history about how the US went down that misguided pathway.

The movie Fat Head provides an easy introduction:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8WA5wcaHp4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNYlIcXynwE

For more on the types of fats I recommend Mary Enig's "Know Your Fats", a dense read but fun for us science lovers. Trans fatty acids are bad bad bad. Here is an interview with Dr. Enig:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxExJkoF2Og

Back on the fashion side, cutting carbohydrates took 4 inches off my waist within 90 days, and got me down out of PLUS sizes.

Hmmm... Is it all hype about the paleo ideaology? I have been reading so much my head is spinning.) I know, common sense- but it all makes some sense and also is very contradictory. Bacon is good? Grains raise insulin levels which make you fatter?

I do think that sugary, processed food turns on a chemical in my brain that cannot be satiated and always struggles with having to stop.

I have never cut out a food group from my diet, unless you count years ago when I stopped drinking soda, which was not a hardship at all. I rarely drink a sugared drink these days, except maybe one of the "lightly sweetened" Honest Teas.

I think all of this comes down to common sense. We all know that packaged food, fast food, etc., are not good for us in large quantities. I've lost weight by paying attention to choices and portion sizes.

In training for running events, I have to keep carbs in my diet, so I eat rice and pasta (trying to stick with brown or wheat) and protein. I try not to do many sugary carbs even though I have a sweet tooth. I try to satisfy that with yogurt, sorbet, or one of those Fiber One bars, but once a week, I'll treat myself to a candy bar -- the vending machine at the radio station has Peanut Butter Snickers!

I never feel deprived, even though I track my calories most days. Exercise has helped hugely too!

I saw that study too. Yogurt, nuts, and broccoli were all big hits, as I recall. Right now, as I cruise YLF (and before I go out to mow the lawn in the 95 F heat!), I'm eating a bowl of chopped up apple, strawberries, and blueberries with a dollop of honey-flavored Greek yogurt! IMHO, the absolute best-tasting, out-of-this-world honey Greek yogurt is by the brand The Greek Gods. What do you prefer, MaryK?

Mary, I did catch a little blurb but didn't read further. I should look into it. Just this year I jumped on the Greek yogurt bandwagon instead of my Yoplait lights. 2 years back I tried to at least find flavors under 18 or 20 grams of sugar - which is still a lot! I can't stomach plain just yet, but vanilla has less sugars and is still yummy!

For reasons personal and professional I have done/do a fair amount of reading about the brain-gut connection and various food intolerances, "foods for moods," immune-boosting foods etc.

Certainly everyone must experiment to find their own "bests" (which may change over time).

However, I have to say that people will have to take non-fruit or veg, ideally whole-grain carbs out of my cold dead hands!

Too few carbs for me = too little serotonin = Maybe Leaner but Definitely Meaner me.

That said, I do try to combine grainy carbs with animal or vegetable sources of protein for a nice combo of satiety + fuel.

[Which more or less translates to the "Med Diet" lifestyle Jonesy mentions above...though I generally choose less healthful "food" calories over alcohol-based ones.]

I'm very keen on the Mediterranean approach: lots of veg and fruit, some carbs like pasta, bread, rice, etc., some low-fat dairy, a bit of protein, wine, and occasional sweets. I love food too much to cut out all carbs, for example, or all dairy, and I only eat meat (and no mammals) very occasionally. Combined with plenty of daily exercise, this is a winning approach for me.

I agree with the idea that different approaches seem to work better for different people, and that processed junky foods are not healthy, especially in large, chronic quantities. Some might thrive on low fat, others on low carbs.

The paleo diet sounds interesting, but it certainly isn't based on what ancient peoples actually ate. Just like today, there were tremendous geographical and regional differences in the foods that were available to people. Hunter gatherers, by definition, eat what is available and plentiful in their area; certainly carbs such as tubers were staples of many people's diets, and even their economic systems (e.g., used for trade, as currency, etc.). Yes, I was almost an anthro major in college and took a semester-long class called "Hunters and Gatherers" :)!

Just want to chime in and second Steph's point about being conscious of the sources of our protein. This is the next phase on my own food journey. We already eat our veggies from local sources and some of our meats and dairy; I'm aiming to find more local sources for these in the next year.

No Laura- Paleo isn't like Atkins. It's a completely different thought process about what and why. I forgot about the no dairy part, too. You're trying to eat like a caveman- what humans would have eaten before we did any farming at all. So lean unprocessed meats and fish, eggs, fresh in season produce, and nuts and seeds.

So is Paleo like Atkins? After having our first child in 2002, I did Atkins and dropped tons of weight, partly because after a while, you just can't eat another cold cut and therefore lose the will to eat Amy, I will check out your blog. I know that TX Sarah does Paleo recipes so maybe she will chime in here. Eat Clean is another great plan - if you do her hardcore eating plan for a couple of weeks, you'll be amazed. You're allowed oatmeal, one sweet potato and an apple a day. Good carbs, all.

My own opinion is that, for me, it's better to just cut out processed food (I never ate that much processed food anyway, I always cook from scratch) and watch portions/calories. Have lost weight and inches since starting this three weeks ago. I wouldn't cut out whole food groups - I have a friend doing the Paleo diet, and she has to cut out dairy, all grains and legumes (as well as wine - I know she's struggling with that one!), and I worry for her bones (she doesn't 'believe in' taking supplements). But that's up to her, there isn't a lot I can do about it - she always seems to be on this diet and is never particularly happy with her weight/size - maybe it's not the best thing for her?

Some of the healthiest diets in the world include natural, unprocessed carbs ...

The Paleo diet does make sense - the idea of eating that mimics diets of our hunter-gatherer ancestors - lean meats, seafood, vegetables, fruits, and nuts is actually very similar to the South Beach Diet plan which is based on the glycemic index of foods. Two years ago, I lost 12 pounds of muffin top on the SBD and continue to eat sensibly using the plan guidelines, keeping my weight within two pounds. I avoid white rice, white bread and refined sugar. It's a matter of choosing fresh, healthy foods versus processed junk food. Plus, I love to cook, so it's easy to pick the good stuff.

My boyfriend has been doing a low carb diet--kind of like modified Atkins--for many years now. He does it because he likes to eat a lot of food (has a huge appetite), but doesn't like to gain weight, and this keeps him pretty slim. Having said that, cutting out carbs does not equal a healthy diet. Sure, processed carbs aren't great for you. But neither is bacon, ham, processed meat, etc. All of that stuff is acceptable on a low-carb diet, but it's really bad for you (I'm not talking about Paleo here, because I just don't know enough about it, but other low carb diets like Atkins). Additionally, his low carb diet really doesn't allow for things like bananas and apples, and I think that's unhealthy.

At the end of the day, everyone would be healthier if they cut out all processed foods. Carbs aren't inherently evil. If the only issue is losing weight, I feel the need to say that I managed to lose 35 pounds (five dress sizes on my 5'1 frame) on a fully vegetarian diet that did include carbs--both natural and processed. I did it through portion control. Would it solve an issue with diabetes? I'm not sure--some diabetes is weight-related, and simply losing weight can solve the problem. In other cases, I know that carbs can play a role. It's not something I have ever had to deal with, so I'm not really informed about it.

If you're interested in the other side of the coin, I would read books like Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer or even just the Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. The fact is that a higher protein diet means eating more meat in many cases, so I think it's important to realize the issues related to that--most of the meat that is readily available in this country comes from factory farms, and there are a lot of health (as well as ethical and environmental) issues that are related to that.

I don't follow a low-carb diet now because I don't have the willpower (I always mean to go back to it, though), but I did during both of my pregnancies because I had gestational diabetes. I've never had so much energy and felt so good as I did when I was eating a large amount of protein and a fairly small amount of carbs (and those carbs came mostly from veggies and occasionally whole grains). I really liked Nina Plank's Real Food, but I don't follow that either, to be honest. I expect that it's probably similar to the Paleo diet.

Wow,
This is a hot topic. I read the book "The end of overeating" and was amazed at how much processed food can cause you to want more and more of it. I have had hard times with sugar- always wanting more and now I realize that it was not just lack of willpower that cause the cravings but that we are actually being drugged (in a way) to want more. I have been cutting carbs, feel better and do not crave sweets as much. i have been concerned that this was perhaps just another fad but more and more science has come out about the low- fat diet not being as successful as once imagined. Thank you all so much, I will read the books and definitely watch the movies recommended!

Thanks Amyrerh! Great blog, I just subscibed.

I'm type 1 diabetic. My nutrition training echoes what everyone has basically said here. That is, a good diet is: Lean protein (~1-2 oz per meal, when doing 3 meals a day), limited fats, veg carbs, fruit carbs, easy on the starchy carbs (grains essentially - like rice, flour-based products, oatmeal - and potatoes).

On the surface, that kinda sounds like the Paleo diet. But I don't know anything about it, and the "lowering your insulin to lose or maintain weight" sounds a little funky to me. Since I give myself insulin, I will tell you that a carb is a carb is a carb when it comes to insulin. 15 grams of carb, whether bread or veg, is going to take the same amount of insulin. The real difference is you'd have to eat three salads at least to take in the same amount as in 1 slice of bread.

I also find the glycemic index not worth it for similar reasons, which maybe the Paleo diet is supposed to leverage. There ARE some things like oatmeal or popcorn which take longer to metabolize, with a less sharp rise. But frankly they take sooo long, you might want to avoid them. The body wasn't meant to digest all day, to have insulin running through it 24x7. If we're talking about "lowering insulin" in that way, that might make sense - but what you have to do is the opposite of what people suggest.

If you are worried about bloodsugar spikes (which are really hard for the body to get under control), the thing you have to worry about is liquid sugar. I.e. soda AND fruit juice AND fruit.

My last thought is, they've done some studies about body types. Some people lose more weight cutting carbs and others cutting fats. Of course, a lot of times these are found together (like in a croissant). But personally, cutting fat is what does it for me.

Amy - just wanted to say I'm really enjoying your blog! You have lots of great recipes (and of course, fashion.) I'm not doing Paleo, but have cut way way back on carbs (and calories for now), and it's great to see how many yummy things there are to eat that don't involve tons of carbs.

I'm a Paleo/Primal lifestyler and incorporate it into my fashion blog - lowcarbhighstyle.wordpress.com. I personally believe a lot of the "conventional wisdom" about diet today is based on a lot of bad science, and frankly, money unfortunately. If you want to learn more, I suggest watching the movie "Fathead" on Netflix or Hulu, reading "Why We Get Fat and What to do About it" by Gary Taubes (an easier to read version of Good Calories, Bad Calories) and "The Great Cholesterol Con" by Dr. Malcom Kendrick. There is a lot of fascinating info out there and whether you decide it is for you or not, I think it is good to be as informed as possible. A couple of other great Paleo sites are http://www.everydaypaleo.com, Mark's Daily Apple, and http://nomnompaleo.com. Feel free to message me if you have any specific questions or would like more resources!
