Hugs! I feel your pain. Have lost 2 HATS. In the winter. One adorable angora pink berette. The most beautiful hat ever. Can't find one like her. Don't remember where. And on trains a burgundy felt fedora and a perfect white jacket. Loved them A LOT. Costly also. I tell to myself that when you loose something, you find something else in life. If that may offer you some consolation. I'm quite superstitious and don't pick up anything I find. I try to find the owner. One summer I found a gold earring at the pool. The next week I lost my silver ring , with a lot sentimental value ( given to me by dad ) .

Oh my! Thank you, thank you, thank you for your kind words and sympathy over what is really a very silly, small little problem. I think I overreacted a little bit due to some other minor irritants.

Thank you also for sharing your stories of things you've lost. Just like Rae, I was crying a little inside, reading them. Now that I think of it, I have lost other things in the past that had more monetary/sentimental value. It's just part of life.

And yes, the official story is the scarf got picked up by someone who really needed it to keep warm or wanted something beautiful in their life and it didn't end up as a tangled dirty mess on the train tracks/in the road.

So sorry! I hate it when stuff like this happens! I always try to put a philosophical spin on such disappointments. Like, it could have been worse, I could have lost my ????? which I could never replace. Maybe a lesson is in it somewhere that will save you something greater in then long run.

This, too, shall pass.

Oh Sylvie! So sad - remember when I lost my favorite trenchcoat a while back? Who loses a COAT? In Alaska?! The good thing (if it's possible to look at it this way) is that it was not something sentimental or irreplaceable, but the $ value still does sting.

My sister lost her expensive custom-made WEDDING ring at Grand Central station just days after she was married. She dropped it as the train she was on was pulling out of the station. Needless to say, it did not get returned.

Oh, I'm crying inside at all these stories! I'm glad you feel better, though, Sylvie - at least it was something you were going to return... $90 and not priceless, you know? I will always remember leaving my favorite stuffed cat on the train in Disneyland as a child. And can you guess why my casual bags must all now have crossbody straps? :T

Hugs to you!
Please hang on to the bright side... a donation of style and luxury to someone who had nothing... it might make a huge difference in that someone's life. You know sometimes things happen for a reason. I know that now, it's not what you want to hear.. (I hug you virtually)... I hope the bad feeling goes away soon.

Oh, this is a sad story! I would have been in tears, for sure! DO NOT feel guilty--it was an accident and now someone else has a lovely new scarf to keep them warm. You just did your good deed of the season!

My saddest story involves a beautiful silver cuff bracelet that I bought in Mexico on my honeymoon. It had sentimental value, of course, and it fit my wrist like it was made for me. I just loved it. Well, I was walking my toddler in the stroller one day around my neighborhood, and I noticed it was no longer on me. I retraced my steps immediately, but it was gone.

Oh no!! Sorry, Sylvie. (((HUGS))).

This might make you feel better. I once left a whole bag of newly shopped items on a bus in the Netherlands - and could not get it back. I cried on my Dad's shoulder. He felt so bad for me that we went back the next day and he re-bought everything for me.

Perhaps hubby will buy you a scarf that you do like. You need cheering up.

And perhaps that lost scarf is keeping a homeless person warm

Aww, I'm so sorry! I know how awful I feel when I lose something, so I understand.

The last thing I lost was a beautiful, delicate charm and small gemstone chain bracelet my husband gave me. It disappeared somewhere in the BWI airport, and I called Lost and Found several times over the following month, but it was never turned in. :-(

Oh, here's a careless loss story. When my sister and I cleaned out our mom's house after her passing, we had a yard sale. One man was interested in some old tools from my great uncle's and great-grandfather's collections. My sister and I worked out a price for a small selection of them and put them aside for the man while he continued to look around. My sister told him she decided she was going to keep the remaining tools -- there were a couple of saws with beautiful carved designs in the handles.

Well, ten minutes later, the man and all the tools were gone. Both of us had gotten busy with other customers, and he took off with the whole batch. I even jumped in my car and drove around the neighborhood looking for his truck, and stopped at another yard sale to check for him. I warned the people holding that yard sale about him too.

My sister was heartsick. The tools were the only thing we weren't sure we wanted to part with that we hadn't carefully tucked away. I am not normally a vengeful person, but that day it crossed my mind that it might be a bit of poetic justice if that man cut himself on one of those old saws and contracted tetanus!

Oh, do I relate to this. Yes, in the overall scheme it doesn't matter. Yep, it stings though. (Just recently got a $100 parking ticket. Think of what I could have bought with that money!) A few weeks ago I also left a really nice bracelet I'd made (hand-woven with tiny Swarovski crystals--took me at least six hours of work) in a dressing room and needless to say no one turned it in.

We're pulled in so many different directions these days. It's a wonder this doesn't happen all the time to everyone.

Glad you're feeling better Sylvie :)

In the past I have lost, in separate incidents, a dress and a book, on the way home from purchasing (and yes, trains were involved). It feels like money flows through my fingers like water sometimes. Such a disappointing and frustrating feeling.

I always hoped someone would enjoy reading the poems of Rilke that I never got to...Come to think of it, in my city a program was recently started of books being deliberately "lost" on public transport for people to find. Hopefully someone will end up thrilled to have found your scarf.

@crazyone: Thanks for helping to put it in perspective. You're right - it would have been much worse if I'd lost a cherished item.
@Suz: I am feeling better already. Sugar therapy works wonders. :)
@Lantana: You're right - if it has been picked up by someone (instead of destroyed), I hope it's picked up by someone who appreciates it.
@Queen Mum: Oh no! That's awful. It's so much worse when it was something you were about to return, than something that you've already at least gotten use out of.

I'm fine now. The husband was appropriately sympathetic/took the loss in stride, which helped a lot.

Thank you Lyn.

Unfortunately there's no chance whomever picked it up would try to return it. There are a fair number of homeless people and sketchy people in the area. The "train station" is really just an elevated platform in the middle of the road at various intersections so there's no real lost and found.

I feel like a royal idiot.

I was on my way to the shopping center and just missed the train at the stop closest to my home. Because the trains are slow and the stops are close together, I decided to walk ahead to the next stop in the hopes of catching it. Once I got to the next platform, which is literally 2 blocks away, I discovered that the cashmere/silk scarf I was about to return was no longer in my bag.

I retraced the two blocks back but I couldn't find it. Even though it had only been out of my possession for 5-10 minutes, someone must have picked it up and kept it. Of course I missed both the original train and the next train 15 minutes afterwards. I finally caught the third train, having wasted half an hour of my life and lost a $90 scarf.

I just feel really sick to my stomach about having wasted that much money. Ironically I was originally going to hold onto the scarf for a few days and think about it but decided to shove it into the bag as I was leaving the house.

I feel guilty because if I hadn't been so obsessed with clothes shopping, I wouldn't have so many things to return that the bag was overstuffed, nor would I be purchasing things I knew I'd probably end up returning.

Anyway, I know it's a small thing in the grand scheme of things and there are people who have real problems in their lives. This is the equivalent of getting a parking ticket - you do something stupid and suffer a financial penalty.

Thank you if you got through this. It was helpful just to be able to vent.
