If that may offer you some consolation. I'm quite superstitious and don't pick up anything I find. I try to find the owner. One summer I found a gold earring at the pool. Because the trains are slow and the stops are close together, I decided to walk ahead to the next stop in the hopes of catching it. Once I got to the next platform, which is literally 2 blocks away, I discovered that the cashmere/silk scarf I was about to return was no longer in my bag.</p> <p>I retraced the two blocks back but I couldn't find it. Even though it had only been out of my possession for 5-10 minutes, someone must have picked it up and kept it. Of course I missed both the original train and the next train 15 minutes afterwards. I finally caught the third train, having wasted half an hour of my life and lost a $90 scarf.</p> <p>I just feel really sick to my stomach about having wasted that much money. Ironically I was originally going to hold onto the scarf for a few days and think about it but decided to shove it into the bag as I was leaving the house.</p> <p>I feel guilty because if I hadn't been so obsessed with clothes shopping, I wouldn't have so many things to return that the bag was overstuffed, nor would I be purchasing things I knew I'd probably end up returning.</p> <p>Anyway, I know it's a small thing in the grand scheme of things and there are people who have real problems in their lives. This is the equivalent of getting a parking ticket - you do something stupid and suffer a financial penalty.</p> <p>Thank you if you got through this. It was helpful just to be able to vent. </p>
