Hi Vicki,
About 10 years ago (so take it for what that's worth!) my mother and I stayed at the Montague near the British Museum. I don't know what the prices are like these days, but the rooms were lovely and the breakfast traditionally English. It had lots of chintz and a quintessentially British feel. The location was wonderful, too: right across the street from the British Museum and near a tube stop.

http://www.montaguehotel.com/?.....ness+listi

We loved it there. Good luck!

Vicki, hello! I will be writing some more via PM when we get back. I cannot recommend hotels because we are staying in a small apartment in the suburbs! This was the least expensive, most commodious arrangement we could make at the drop of a hat when our earlier accommodation fell through, but it is about a 25 minute commute into central London. It works just fine for us because we tend not to go back to the place during the day so we simply go out in the morning and come home at night - yet at the same time we have both been able to work here (as it is a working holiday for both).

More soon!

Hi Vicki

This sounds like an amazing trip.

If your brother can find a coupon I would highly recommend this unbelievably quaint and very British hotel. You are literally just off Berkeley Square and a very short walk to Bond Street and Piccadilly. If I could some up the vibe I would say it is so old fashioned it's cool.

http://www.chesterfieldmayfair.com/

http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/H.....-London_En

Zap, those are outstanding photos and I'd be very interested in that property (still not sure why my bro said to look for other avenues). One source said the Atheneum in Piccadilly is in the heart of everything and boutique and very nice for London and another travel blogger recommended a Marriott property called the St. Pancras Renaissance London Hotel:

http://www.marriott.com/hotels.....don-hotel/

Do you think this is the hotel you mentioned above? If so, I don't think rooms were available then and we're looking at closer to $300 US.

bj1111, youth hostels have gotten a total refurbishing, I'm sure; I just couldn't get this group convinced I don't think.

Plus, my brother wants breakfast included in the rate.

Surprisingly, try the youth hostels. They had the best location with fun vibe even for a family with kids or parents in sydney. The whole thing has gotten a revamp lately.

Vicky, my only rec is a Marriott, the one at County hall to be exact. I am not sure how much the night is, we booked it with points but the view, oh boy, the view! My balcony overlooked Big Ben and the London Eye. Highly recommended. I added some pics of the amazing view.

I'm in the midst of planning a trip, at the end of May, to London for four days, before boarding a weeklong cruise to Spain and France. I’ll be traveling with my brother and mother, so we’ll need four nights and two rooms (I get Mom), before leaving Victoria Station to be transported to Southampton for the cruise.

We would like to stay in a nicely-appointed hotel, with a boutique feel or interesting B&B (even a two-bedroom, perhaps) over a traditional Marriott or Hilton, but we’re open to something nice, yet also budget-friendly. Of course, my brother, being in finance, never likes to pay retail, and is usually a master at finding special rates, “friends and family discounts” or coupons. We're hoping there may be some deals out there. Yes, we want it all: Value, quality, cool factor, etc. Since we’ve each only been there briefly, we’re not familiar with any choices at the moment.

It’s always nice to stay in a fun neighborhood with lots of little shops, cafes, markets, too. I understand that there are hundreds of places to choose from, and I’m just wondering if anyone has a favorite hotel or suggestion. I’ll be pm’ing Suz when she gets back and I've saved her thread on London eateries. Right now, it's finding a hotel. Fashion is next! Many thanks for any help...
