Deb -- picture of your dog is hilarious and if I had received that card it would have been my favorite, maybe Mom doesn't share your same style of humor.

Janet and Nancy - I love the Christmas pics! Amazing that both of you got your "families" to pose so nicely ... must have been the Spirit of the Season.

I'm adding here a pic of Teddy from Christmas 2009. As you see - he is *not* a happy camper. However, that didn't stop me from making it our Christmas card that year, over the greeting "Happy Christmas" ... which, of course, Teddy was not. I thought it was funny, but my mother was *not amused* and let me know about it, too. :-O

They don't get along usually Don't let this innocent under-the-Christmas-Tree picture fool you!

Aww, Deb! I saw this thread days ago but didn't have a chance to thoroughly read it, so I'm catching up. My whole family is a bunch of softies when it comes to animals. I'm a big supporter of Best Friends in Utah -- I've visited a few times, and it's a wonderful place!

Here are our "babies" in their Christmas finery. Just a little iPhone snapshot, but it is so remarkable to have all three of them lined up and still that I had to share it. Of course, the promise of treats is involved in getting them to stay still long enough to grab a picture!

Rocky is the husky mix. My husband got him from a shelter before we met, so Rocky has to be about 14 years old. He's an amazing dog. He had spinal surgery for three ruptured disks in his back almost two years ago, and I think that gave him a whole new lease on life. He jumps around and plays like a puppy!

The fawn pug is Sophie. We got her after we married, 7 1/2 years ago, and Tippi is the black pug -- we got her when we moved into our new home 4 1/2 years ago. I've always been more of a big dog person, but pugs are just hilarious. They have big-dog personality, just in a small package!

Thanks, Dana Lynn. That is SHOCKING about Cassidy! I am so appalled - poor baby. The thing is that we have no alternative but to trust our pets to others, and in the animal world there is not the "vetting" (so to speak) of caretakers that we have in our world. I *love* parrots - you're so lucky! I've always yearned for one - but our lifestyle wasn't conducive to having a bird - especially one that lives for so long - and now *I* won't live long enough ... :-/

Deb that's so sad about your pups eyes. I've had my far share of careless folks too. When my Lhasa, Cassidy, was a pup we brought her to get groomed the first time. She had never been and let them know this would be new to her. When we picked her up she was super lethargic and slept for hours. I started to worry and brought her to our family friend who is a vet. She said that they had drugged her. Seriously! They never even asked! The worst part was that she is extremely sensitive to medication. SHe had to be kept for two days after being spayed because of her reaction to the drugs. Dogs normally go home the same day. They could have made her horribly sick.

The second instance was when we boarded her for the weekend so we could attend my sister's wedding out of state. We got a call from a local car dealship saying that they had found the Cassidy. We were horribly confused and called back. They said she just wandered into the dealer and was hanging out with them. We called the kennel and they said she had escaped through the fence but they would go get her- DARN right you'll go get her!!! The worst part- we left early so we could pick her up a day early. The charged us an extra fee for picking her up after 6. Seriously! Now she just fly's with us or we have a good friend just stay at the house.

Cassidy is the first photo. Myles and Calliope are my parrots and then I also keep ornamental goldfish. Each of the fish are about 7-8" I like to take care of things

Coco! Another dog collector - lol! What's not to love?

Scarlet - Isn't it something, how people can be so cruel? The heirs didn't care one iota about the fact that their elderly parents had loved and cared for them since they were puppies. And you can see that they did, for we continue to discover new tricks they'd been taught, and words they know. I can only imagine the old gentleman's stress when he was removed from his home the last time, and taken to hospital - wondering and worrying about his pets...

Angie, thank you so much for the kind words - I'm very lucky to have a husband who may not always approve at first, but quickly feels the love ... *and* walks them all when it's raining! I've seen your precious pups in the photos when your Dad visited, and they are the prettiest little girls! It's so obviously how much you love them. :-)

One more dog story, and then I'm done - LOL - but this is current and I am so very upset and need to vent. :-O

Hannah had a routine cleaning yesterday, under general anesthesia. I noticed when she came home last night that she couldn't/wouldn't open her eyes. I attributed it to the after-effects of the anesthesia. When I woke this morning, her eyes will still shut, and she was pawing at them.

I brought her to the vet, immediately ... and, well, she has a corneal ulcer on each of her eyes! Cause? They dried out during the time she was under anesthesia. (I never knew that dogs (and humans) don't always keep their eyes closed!) They usually administer artificial tears to keep them lubricated ... but someone was negligent with poor Hannah, and the corneas dried and tore.

We got her in to see an animal opthamologist, who confirmed they had ulcers, but they were superficial and "not uncommon" (hmmph), and should heal within a week or two (gawd...). She's on topical antibiotics and oral pain meds, and has a cone around her that is driving her crazy - she burrows when she sleep, and can't do it with the collar.

It's always *something* ...

I have four dogs, they complete me, too!

1. Coco (the Lion dog) is the chocolate lab on the left. Maggie is the black one; they are littermates like Angie's Yorkies.

2. Bernie and Robbie. Robbie (left) is a Border Collie. Bernie (R) is an Entlebucher Sennenhund (a type of smaller short-haired Bernese Mt. Dog).

3. Close-up of CocoLion. She was named Coco at birth but got so big and Alpha that her nickname (as well as my forum name) became CocoLion.

4. My four dogs plus my boyfriend's two (the light colored one in front is his rescue Oliver).

I love them all especially Maggie the black lab but she hates to be photographed, she's always moving!

beautiful animal family Deb!!

We are down to just 2 cats. Gracie, my ylf icon was found in my backyard as a kitten abandoned and starving...so weak she could barley walk. Yet always graceful and ladylike...hence the name Gracie We have had her 5 years

Lexie was a rescue with a horrible URI that nearly killed her as a kitten and the 6 weeks of antibiotics left her with a sensitivity to them so she gets very sick on antibiotics and can't tolerate them. we have had her 10 years. She is very playful and still acts like a kitten.

They are both very different and dislike one another intensely...but they both love me and race to my lap each night for cuddle time...the other will wait patiently for her turn

Our lives are truly enriched by the love and devotion of these precious pets of ours aren't they!!

There seem to be a lot of YLF furbabies out there, and it would be such fun to meet them - after all, they *are* featured attractions in many photos!

I’ll start. :o)

We currently have six pets- four dogs and two cats. All are rescues, with the exception of one - and I’ll start with him, since he’s been with us longest … 10 years!

Teddy is a Toy Fox Terrier and, bottom line, I was fated to have this little guy in my life. I passed a pet shop window, and saw a sassy, tiny scruff o' nothin' and my heart stood still. He was mine, and that was that. I simply cannot imagine life without him. He's my second son.

Hannah is a Jack Russell Terrier we rescued 3 years ago as a companion for Teddy - who had lost his best friend when an older pet of ours died. Hannah is very attached to me, and has her quirks, but she is lots of laughs, and as pretty and feminine as they come.

Our most recent rescues are a pair of seniors adopted from a high-kill shelter. Reducing quite a drama to a quick story: Trinka, a german shepherd, and Prince, a collie/shepherd mix, had been together since puppyhood. They were abandoned by the heirs of their elderly owner who passed away. No one wants old dogs ... and especially two old dogs ... and especially two old dogs with health issues.

When I learned they were to be put down, I drove up to New Jersey from DC and brought the old souls home with me. One year later, they've become such a part of the family! With the right food and medical care, they’ve blossomed. There is much life left in them, and I’m so glad they will spend it with us.

And on to the cats ...

Perkins and Sophie were weeks-old kittens, up for adoption in a cage at the vets, along with several others. I was going there daily with my 16-yr-old cat, Charlie, for subcutaneous hydration, and Perkins, in particular, caught my eye. He is all black, and his little head would stretch waaaay above the other kittens, like a periscope, to seek me out and to look me in the eyes.

So, home he came - after poor Charlie had died - along with Sophie, who is not a litter mate, but a tiny kitten he had taken under his wing. Five years later, they remain inseparable. Perkins is a very, very special cat.

So there you have it ... sorry for the long post - but I had a lot of ground to cover!
