Thank you very much for suggestions. We've had Gap and Children's place pants in the past, but for the past 2 years it's been ON almost exclusively, and that's also when the problem manifested itself. The ON jeans do have adjustable waist, but IMO it doesn't work well. I always assumed Gap had the same cut, but looks like it's not the case. I might start here since it's the easiest.
Anne, I considered husky sizes, but then I looked at the size chart and it's way bigger than he is, he is actually very regular size. The belly sticks out which makes the waistband sit low in front. He needs a contoured waistband!
Katiepea, momtojessandluke, Fi - thanks for Pumpkin Patch rec! I searched and there are stores in US, even in the area, although quite far away. I'm going to try an online order. I do like what I see on their site.
Sparky, LE was the next place on my list to try. Is there any particular cut/style you like? I always browse their catalogs but find it hard to order w/o seeing it in person.
Dusty, thank you for the tip - I'll check out JCP, there is one not very far.
Debbie, he wears out the knees very quickly! I'd love to find something with reinforced knees (I think I saw some in LE catalog), but the bum issue is my concern #1.

I too would recommend Gap.The rise and fit of the pants and jeans are good. The cloth is very good and holds up well.

Try the Children's Place too. The waist are adjustable and and I have pretty good luck with them holding up. I have a 6 yr old that can tear the knee's out of a pair of jeans before I can turn around.

I was going to suggest the Gap too. I buy all jeans for the little boys in my life there.

Marianne, we have the opposite problem - around here, we see crack because the boys are so so skinny that their pants barely stay up! Other than trying to buying slims with adjustable waists whenever I can, I've taken to have them sometimes wear suspenders!

Anyway, we love gap & lands end pants! Anne has a good point about husky - maybe they have a higher rise? I miss that store Babystyle - they had wonderful drawstring & elastic waist bottoms.

I've had luck with buying brands where slim, regular and husky sizes are available. With his "baby belly", do you think he'd benefit from a husky size?

We've had pretty good luck with the Arizona brand from JCPenney's (with adjustable waist, of course) and Gymboree always works well (again, with the adjustable waist). I haven't tried any, but I'm sure Crazy8 would work pretty well, too, since they're the same company as Gymboree.

I've noticed that recently Old Navy jeans seem to be cut with a shorter rise on my kids ~ more so for my DD but also for my boys. I've had better luck with Lands' End. Plus, LE has regular, husky and slim sizing for many of their pants and jeans.

Gap cargos. All the rage for 5-year-old boys :)

I have bought Pumpkin Patch - http://www.pumpkinpatchusa.com and it is great. They do have stores in the U.S. - I've been to one in Phoenix.

As a New Zealander I have to advocate Pumpkin Patch clothing - it is the most common children's clothing brand in NZ and seems to be very good quality (although not cheap).

I am sure that they must have some stockists in the USA. I know that House of Fraser and ASOS stock them in the UK.

I was going to suggest the same as Katiepea. Pumpkin Patch stuff is really nice. And pants that have an adjustable waist really help.... and skirts that are adjustable for girls too

Hi Marianne

Being in Aus, I'm not familiar with the brand ON, however the first thing that I'm wondering about is whether they have an adjustable waistband?

I know on the occasions where I've bought jeans for the boys when there has either been elastic or no adjustable tabs, I have had issues with fit.

In terms of denim that looks good and is hard wearing, fits great and has the aforementioned adjustable waistband, I can recommend Pumpkin Patch branded denim, which does ship to the US and is quite reasonably priced at the moment. My three boys wear their jeans and I have found that there are no issues with "cleavage". Here is a link for you, in case you are interested:

http://www.pumpkinpatch.com.au.....h/boy/boy/

Good luck getting to the bottom of the situation. (sorry, couldn't resist!)

Sorry for OT, I am starting my back to school shopping and I am looking for a new kind of pants for my 5yo. I've usually bought him ON jeans in the past, and there is always a problem with, um, bottom cleavage. Don't know if it's his build - he has a bit of baby belly, but kids that age normally don't have much difference between waist and hips measurements anyway. Is it a rise issue? I want to remedy this problem before school starts. I've tried ON cargos with elastic waist and they work better than jeans, but not quite. Sounds like I should give up on ON at this point. I know there are other moms of boys here, so I'd appreciate any pant suggestions from savvier shoppers. Thank you!
