Tarzy: awesome comment. :-)

Sveta: you make an interesting point. I agree. I think I look better all flushed and sweaty from exercise (although after half an hour of standing around cooling off, I may not smell better...). Some of those people looked better after running, too (particularly a couple of the women with unflattering hairstyles) but most looked OK both ways-- just different.

As a photographer, I am REALLY fascinated by this. I love juxtaposition in art, fashion, and pretty much anything.

As for the lighting, it is exactly the same in both the "before" and "after" images-- all with powerful studio lights (you could set this up in daylight and the sun won't interfere with your shot if you have the right gear and know what you're doing).

The "before" images seem harsher probably due to the sweat creating more noticeable specular highlights, and the joggers are also coming from a very focused activity and have just met a stranger with a camera-- all these things will naturally make the "before" shots seem closed off, guarded, and intense. Once the joggers are back in the studio, cleaned up, they feel more confident, and the photographer is no longer a complete stranger. They're going to be more relaxed and look more open in the second image.

Thanks for posting this! I've been thinking about this since yesterday, when I arranged to meet one of my coaches for coffee next week, and was excited about presenting myself "dressed", since he's never seen me off the track.

I liked the swimmer portraits that were referenced in the jogger article as well: http://www.good.is/post/beyond.....-swimmers/. It is almost like having a secret life, or a secret identity.

It is interesting. Maybe I am kidding myself but I think I look younger after 0.5 hour on the treadmill in the gym. Tired and sweaty, yes, but my face get a natural blush, seems more alive and the skin seems tighter. Too bad it does not last for days afterward!:-)

I agree with Jonesy--- I don't think I look that torn up after I jog, but perhaps I am not hard core enough. I would pass out if I went outdoor jogging during the harshest part of a hot day like these people appear to.

I am particularly stricken by the lady in red. She is the only older lady in the group that hasn't completely tried to erase what her skin really looks like with a thick layer of makeup. I fine the age spots on the chest with none on the face a little disconcerting. She looks confident in her natural beauty.

I am also quite stricken by the running shot of the woman wearing the small flower necklace-- she seems so free in the running shot, but almost as if she is trying to hide herself in the second shot, which is a shame because she is beautiful.

The younger black man seems to present himself to the world rather similarly to his "letting it all out" running shot.

LOL @ Tarzy!

I love this project! I like it more than many a photoseries I've seen. I think it has to do with identity, idealized self, world view... the jogging pictures are kind of like pictures with all the models' usual idetifiers stripped away - the contrasts between the two show what each likes to highlight about themselves. The little touches of personality really stand out next to the utilitarian workout gear. Pretty cool!

I have one shot of the running leg of my triathlon where I look like I'm melting into the ground, seriously! It's a terrible shot as far as 'glam' goes but boy does it show how hot and tired I am!!

Very interesting!! One thing I immediately noticed is that the first pics were taken outside, and everyone is (are??) squinting because of the sun. The second set was taken inside and everyone's eyes are much larger due to the change in lighting. It says he tried to replicate the lighting but the huge change in eye appearance immediately suggests that he did not achieve the same type of lighting. That one thing would cause a vast difference in the photos.

I guess I don't quite understand the point of his project. Of course we present ourselves differently in different situations. People wouldn't go running in the clothing and with hair and makeup done like in the 2nd set of pictures. And they wouldn't end up out to dinner or at work after just having come from a run when they are all sweaty. There are many different life situations in life that call for different presentations of ourselves.

I am fascinated by their eyes, particularly the men who don't have the benefit of make-up (or at least it looks that way), the tiredness is very evident in the eyes. There is a raw animalistic quality to the post run shots. thanks for posting this Janet.

ETA I also think I look a little like the jogging photos after a rough night with the girls.

I'm trying to figure out what he was going for here. He told them to pose the same way in the studio as they did when they ran, so it looks like most of them tried to copy the facial expression as well... at least how they set their mouths.

There's some Italian saying about beauty being centered in the mouth.
Strikes me that these folks, like most/all of us, center their social selves
in the set of their mouth and jaw.

As a runner and photographer, I found this project particularly interesting. I couldn't help but be fascinated with how people transform from their "brute" athlete selves into the image they cultivate in their everyday lives.
