His teeth had worn down and were moving around and he was in danger of losing some of them. He had them on for 2 1/2 years, grumbling and complaining all the time. Because he didn't wear his retainer consistently he is going to have to have more work done. Not much advice (I had my braces as a teenager) except get used to cleaning your teeth a lot, or eating less frequently. The big silver kind. I looked young to begin with and with the braces i was asked at least once that i recall if i needed a youth ticket (14 yrs old or younger). Which was kind of embarrassing, but the ticket was cheaper. Still I said i was 20 paid for the adult price.</p> <p>I havent worn my retainers after (I was diligent for a few years then got away from the habit of it) and have had some movement back so be sure to wear them The worst of what I wanted corrected hasnt moved back though and I am very happy with the result. Best thing I ever did. The braces were just fine. It was the retainer afterwards that was the annoying thing, ugh. But that part is over fairly quickly.</p> <p>BTW - even now, over 10 years later, I still sleep with a night retainer (top and bottom) to ensure my teeth don't slide back into their old positions. He is really laid back and does not care about the braces, but he is not looking forward to January when he will be having the surgery. She was so insecure about her crooked teeth beforehand; even when she had braces, she felt better smiling once her teeth were straighter. She has a gorgeous smile now.</p> <p>I went through years of braces as a kid - collectively, about 4-5 years in braces as I had them twice, but even so my teeth are not perfect - I wish they had put a permanent retainer on me as they did my mom, because my bottom teeth definitely shifted around. She was doing a trial run of lower braces only, on the *inside* of her teeth. It's a technique used in Europe but not much yet in Canada. Her brother, an orthodontist, was using her as a test subject. An outside observer could not see the braces, but she could feel them against her tongue. It made her lisp a little. When I asked her how it was going, she said pretty good, except that she'd lost ten pounds because she'd stopped snacking between meals! When you have braces you have to clean your teeth every time you eat, so she said she ended up only eating at mealtimes, because it's such a hassle.</p> <p>Another one was a friend I've known since elementary school. He had crooked teeth as a teenager but refused to get braces, and his parents didn't force the issue. As he got older his teeth got a lot more crooked and he regretted his stubbornness. At 38 he bit the bullet and got braces. He just got them off a few months ago, shortly before his 40th birthday. He too complained about the hassle of having food stuck in his teeth all the time. He hated the whole process for that reason, and left the braces on only until his teeth were reasonably straight. His orthodontist wanted them on a bit longer.</p> <p>The third was a guy I worked with about ten years ago. He hated his receding chin, so he went in for jaw surgery as well as braces! They severed his lower jaw on both sides, slid it forward, and bolted it with metal clasps. Yikes! Then he had to have his jaw wired shut for three months. I remember him saying he was getting awfully sick of milkshakes. I don't remember him complaining about stuff stuck in his braces, but honestly, I think that was the least of his concerns!</p> <p>Anyway, my point is, you're not alone. But oh my, was I wrong. I'm getting braces in two weeks. They are going to be ceramic ones, so way less visible (see pics). I'm actually quite happy, maybe they are even going to look cute!</p> <p>I'm not wearing them for aesthethics but because my maxilar bones (is that the name?) are slowly moving sideways since my teeth do not close well.
