Big dyson fan. Mine doesn't have a beater bar, though, so in that respect I am not qualified to answer. The amount of dirt it pulls up though is amazing.

Fourthing (fifthing?) Dyson. I too keep seeing ads for the new lightweight one, but I don't think ours is that heavy at all, and it works a treat. If you get coupons for somewhere like Bed Bath & Beyond you can get a good discount.

LOVE my Dyson. Lightweight to push, but not carry around. I am constantly amazed at what it picks up. It's going strong at 8 years and I've only replaced one hose (because SIL ripped it trying to put it away). I just ordered the Electrolux Ergorapido which is a lightweight combo stick vac/ hand vac for when I want to haul it around quickly. It gets great reviews but I haven't used it yet.

Another vote for Dyson- they have a smaller, lighterweight version out now.

I love my Shark Navigator. It's fairly light weight and small enough to maneuver under, around and between the furniture in my very tiny house. It does a great job on carpet and is not bad on bare floors. There's a new model Navigator (since I got mine) that's more like a Dyson I think.

I'll put in a good word for Lindhaus vacuums. I've had the Health Care Pro for nearly 10 years and it is still going strong. Although not self propelled, it's light and nimble. It also has a different head for vacuuming hard surfaces. You also have the choice to engage or disengage the beater bars..nice when using the hose attachment. It's a purchase I've never regretted.

Oh, it also has a hepa filter. It is recommended for allergy sufferers.

OMG, this is one thread that I feel qualified to answer. My first vacuum was a Hoover upright which was horrible. It was like pushing a brick--but an unbalanced one. It always went to the right (or left) instead of straight. Since then, I've had a Miele canister which worked pretty well but not practical for my current square footage (and stairs.) I currently use a Sebo upright self propelled with a Hepa filter which I flippin' LOVE. It's awesome--easy to push, has a wand that is attached to the body of the vacuum so I can pull it up to pick up cobwebs in corners and other things up high. The vacuum has this neat feature that allows you to lower the handle all the way to the ground which makes vacuuming under beds a snap. The vacuum bags are easy to change and the roller brush pops out for easy cleaning. Gosh, I could go on and on and on....

The main requirement is that it's lightweight or (Im dreaming here) self-propelled. I have a Dirt Devil and I have had it with it! It's like trying to push a huge cement block I just did 3 small rooms and feel like crying....any suggestions are much appreciated!
