Shannon, I am so happy to hear this and those five minutes today are the best inspiration to keep you going, because YOU DID IT and your physiotherapy team proved that with your perseverance and patience you could do it. Keep up the outstanding work, enjoy your running and be gentle getting back into it. What a great feeling it must have been. Way to go!!!

Sounds like a nasty accident, so pleased you're on the mend. I must admit to being envious though, due to my condition I'm finding a brisk walk painful these days. Enjoy!

Thanks for all of your kind comments.

Yes Jonesy, it was quite the tumble. I knew better than to take my eyes off the trail when doing a cross country run in rugged terrain but I just happened to look up for a minute as another runner went past and caught my toe under a tree root. With the momentum I had going my body kept moving forward but obviously my foot did not...needless to say, it wasn't pretty!

Wonderful, amazing story! You must have taken quite a fall! I know exactly what you are talking about re. the joy of being able to do it again. There is nothing so frustrating as feeling super motivated to run, but being thwarted by an injury! I battled tendinitis and other troubles in my ankle for about 6 years and have finally gotten it resolved so that I can run daily. I am so happy now, and I *never* take my mobility and my desire to run for granted.

Yay for you and your fabulous, reconditioned, powerful legs :)!

When those, gee don't feel like running thoughts come a calling, I have to give myself a little kick and remember NOT to take it for granted. I ran with my 13 year old tonight, who is just starting out and complains about this or that hurting...so it puts it all in perspective to know someone had to work so hard to just get to run again! And appreciates ever step I bet! You go girl!

That is fantastic. You're inspiring me to get my butt in gear, since I just signed up for a half-marathon in June. My true running friends are always devastated when they can't run, unlike me who is secretly relieved. You will get back to your old self in no time!

YAY!! I'm happy for you. I'm a runner, so I think I know how hard it would be. I get frustrated when I have to skip a couple runs like I have the last few weeks with holiday travels, company, etc.

Keep up the good work, Shannon! Soon you'll be back full steam.

I had a terrible running accident on a cross-country trail in September 2010 which ended up with me having a dislocated knee, torn meniscus and torn Achilles tendon. It has been a long and frustrating road to recovery, resulting in a 20 pound weight gain and a significant blow to my self-esteem. I lost 75 pounds 8 years ago due in large part to running and had no intention of gaining any of those pounds back. It has been a bitter pill to swallow. However, the physiotherapy team I’ve been working with over the last year has been nothing short of stellar and assured me that they would get me back to running IF I followed their instructions to the letter and didn’t rush things. Well today at the gym at work I ran for the first time in over a year. Sure it was only for 5 minutes but it felt GREAT and did more for me emotionally than I can put into words.

Shannon’s life lesson #862: Perseverance and Patience WILL pay off in the end!

Just wanted to share – thanks for indulging me.
