Taking them to dinner? That is what hubs and I usually do.

Are you traveling in to their home? It's nice to bring something local from your town that isn't available everywhere.
We have brought See;s Candy countless times to midwest/LA friends.
If you are flying and it's hard to carry one something, a thank you giftcard for a restaurant or shop you know they like is special.

I agree with Sara that consumable gifts are great. I usually bring something consumable and kind of luxurious, like fancy chocolates or wine, that can be shared. I often go to a fancy local chocolate shop in my town so it's something a little more unique than a box of Godivas. Although Godivas are great too and I would love to receive them. Or fancy tea if for some reason they are not chocolate/wine types... but really, who does not like chocolate? (Although I suppose someone did once tell me NOT to bring chocolate b/c someone in the house was on a diet...)

Another idea that I think is very thoughtful (assuming you and your hosts are amenable to the idea of you using their kitchen) is to cook them a nice meal one of the nights you are there.

ETA: I think a post-stay gift is a good idea too, but I would think of it more as a thank you gift than a host gift...

It is actually more thoughtful to find something perfect and thank them for the visit afterwards imo.

Edit. Kind of like the difference in sending flowers the day after being invited for dinner with a thougtful note than inundating them the day of when things are already all arranged for guests.

Are they in Texas also? If they're in colder climate, about this time of year, I love those watch me grow bulb gardens.

I'd also love a gift certificate to a favorite restaurant (given when you leave so they clearly use it for themselves).

I really love and appreciate consumable gifts, so that's what I give as well.

Some friends are putting us up for a few days. I'd like to give them something, but I don't know what yet; they have very good, very distinct tastes. Is a POST-stay gift acceptable? (We'd bring something for their four-year-old son for when we arrive, of course!)
