What great ideas here. You're so creative and I love knowing that your kids will always remember what you made for their rooms.
Also love the idea of guests drawing on the chalkboard.

Such fun projects! Spray paint is amazing. I've been pressing oak leaves and then spraying them silver to display with white pumpkins.
In a college elem.ed. art class we once made large collages of a variety of found objects...just junk...glued to a board. Then the whole thing was sprayed matte black. The result was amazing. I recently saw large wall panels in a restaurant done the same way. White, or any color would work. I used mostly circular objects for mine and felt it was almost foolproof. The restaurant had used cork screws, corks, and other wine-related objects in their design, then sprayed them grey.

Carole, I am getting really addicted to spray paint, too! I also did a mirror that I found at the thrift store, and am planning on doing a lamp base from dd's bedroom.

Aida- cute idea! Do your guests leave you little notes?

I have the perpetual calendar almost done, I will probably finish it tomorrow. Just need to clean it up, hit it with a coat of clear and and put it together.

Great ideas! I painted an entire wall of DS's room with the magnetic paint. It works for magnets I print on magnet paper and really thin ones, but it's still pretty cool. As a tween I had an entire wall in cork that I was able to post my Shaun Cassidy posters on. I thought my mom was the coolest and I'm sure your kids will too (until the actual teen years and we all know what happens then :))

and @Kim Martha lost me when she made marshmallows. Some things are not meant to be made.

Love what you did with the chalkboard! I did the same thing (with the spray paint stuff) but over lightly grained wood for my guest bathroom and it works really well. Highly recommended!

Una, I have seen the magnetic paint, and I considered doing that too. I figured a magnetic board and a cork board were redundant, though. I started the dry erase calendar. My hand isn't very steady, even with a ruler, but it will get the job done.

Ooooo! So beautiful. The blackboard finish looks perfect! I'm seeing a lot of people painting these ornate frames a glossy white for a "mod" look, so you're right in style!

Interesting Kim- I never thought to make chalkboard paint. (But then, I would have never thought to make marshmallows, either- that Martha Stewart makes everything from scratch!)

Martha Stewart also has a great recipe for making your own chalkboard paint. I've used it and it's good. This way you can make any color chalkboard paint you would like. All you need is *unsanded"grout (Home Depot in the flooring section) and your own colored paint.

Here's the link, it's at the bottom of the page, but lots of good ideas here:

OK, here is what the frame looked like when I got it from the thrift store (this is actually the matching one that I am going to turn into a bulletin board) in the first pic. Pic 2 is the finished chalkboard. I used the spray on chalkboard, (but I just saw that they make chalkboard contact paper now) and spray painted the frame lavender and then hit it with a glossy top coat.

Great ideas, Khris! They charge a forture for these types of things already made up. And yours will have so much more "custom character"! I made a fabric covered bulletin board for my son's room years ago, and when he was getting rid of it, my daughter claimed it (even though it was in a *masculine* plaid fabric). She liked the vintage feel of it and the fact that none of her friends could go down to Target and buy one like it.
Now don't go getting high on that spray adhesive.....

Just wanted to share these ideas and info for anyone interested.

I'm making a trio of board for my kids' bedroom, and they are turning out to be easier and cheaper than I would have thought.

chalkboards
You can get spray on chalkboard paint at the craft or hardware store (I used a 50% off coupon and got it for under $5) and use it to paint the glass or plastic cover of an old frame. Just scuff it up first with 220 grit sandpaper and wipe it clean and dry- use a couple of coats for full coverage. I found cute oval shaped frames at the thrift store for my daughter's room, and painted the plastic frame a different color.

cork bulletin boards
You can buy pre-framed cork boards for a few dollars at office supply stores or Target and cover them with fabric, but I wanted something different. I found a roll of cork at a craft store (used a 50% off coupon and got it for $1.50), and am going to use spray adhesive to attach it to the backing of a matching old oval frame from the thrift store. I'm painting the frame of this one a different color and I think that I will also add fabric to it.

Dry Erase Calendar
I saw one of these at the crafts store, and thought it was a brilliant idea, and easy to replicate. It was just a frame with a glass front. There was a blank calendar painted on the back in black paint, and you can fill in the dates/events on the front with a dry erase pen. I am doing this with a larger oval frame for my dd that I also found at the thrift store. I'll paint the frame of this one a third color. You could also back this with some fabric or paper to make it colorful.

I wish that I had taken before, and in the process pics, but I will try to post finished pics in this thread. This is a great way to use old frames and make a little more interesting way to keep organized.
