I'm so sorry about your Granny. I'm glad you got to visit with your family, it helps to share what you're going through at times like these. And it's also good to hear you were able to share some humor.

I'm very sorry for your loss, Ele. I'm glad you were able to spend some time with your family and heal. My grandma was very ill for years before she passed away, and although we all missed (and still miss) her terribly, it was a relief to know that she was no longer in pain. I'm glad that you can feel that way too. It helps a lot to have the whole family together, especially if you can have a sense of humor. You sound like you have a wonderful family.

Oh, sorry Ele. I remember reading your post quickly at work but not being able to reply so I guess I misunderstood. Or maybe I have your post confused with Hanna's! Wonder where she is and how she is doing.

In any case, I am glad you had some time with your family, which BTW, I think I love! My family is very serious about these things and my parents especially seem to find me very nasty and insensitive. Oh well.

Thanks, everyone- your kind words really mean a lot!

Maya, I was always going to head home for the funeral, it was whether I was going to go before that was up in the air. Unfortunately it wasn't possible do to a couple of reasons (budget, flight availability and another family situation), but right up until the night before we flew, there was the possibility that I would get to see Granny alive, albeit in a coma.

Angie, you're right about the relief- I think the whole family felt that at the end. Granny was 97 and had expressed several times (in her final weeks) that she felt it was her time to go.

Actually, there was a *hilarious* story about that told at the visitation (I really hope this doesn't offend anyone!). At some point when she was in the coma, Granny's pulse began to slow, so her nurse ran to get the aunts, uncles and cousins who were in the house. Everyone came into her room and stood around her bed, crying a bit and saying goodbye. Then a long, suspenseful silence. Then Granny's pulse normalises and she begins to breathe again. My uncle goes "Well, I guess it really isn't over until the fat lady sings" and my cousin (who is a little overweight) goes "Well, I could give it a shot, if you think it would help." So my whole family is in silent hysterics around Granny's deathbed. It might shock some, but she would have LOVED it.

My sympathies to you and your family on the loss of your granny. Your web writing about your granny and her cooking was a very nice tribute to her.

Hello, ladies! I haven't been by in a while as I've just returned from a week-long trip back home. Some of you might remember that my granny was very ill, and I'm sad to say that she died on the 12th of this month. My sister and I flew home the very next day (we had already bought tickets at that point, because Granny had been in a coma for days and her doctors were saying it was only a matter of time).

It was a tough week for everyone (funeral lovely, but very sad), but I got to see all my cousins, aunts and uncles, as well as my other Grandma (she came up for the funeral, as the two of them were very fond of each other) and some of my close friends. I wrote a little bit about my Granny here, if anyone is interested.

In an effort to make this mildly fashion-related, here's what I wore when I was home! To the visitation: CM microchecks, black V-neck sweater, oxford booties and pearls.
To the funeral: Black/white striped turtleneck from CM tucked into black pencil skirt, black statement belt (borrowed from Mum), big pearl earrings and oxford booties.

I also had a chance to go to my favourite hairdresser when back home, so at least my hair is looking good! ;)

How is everyone else lately?
