<p>Janet, I always love your down-to-earth thoughts! I think we will likely paint over the knotty pine. I don’t abhor it. It’s just such a small room to be encased in knotty pine. It feels like I’m in a sauna or lodge, as you said. I just don’t love wood paneling save very rare instances. I completely understand your house redo! I wouldn’t be aghast hearing someone painted over wood —unless it’s 200+ years old and very very historic. But most knotty pine annd wood paneling isn’t usually that old for r even close. I bought that pillow!!! Only regret is I wish I had bought 2 haha! But I will get more throw pillows soonish. </p>
<p>Suntiger, thank you! I went with look 2. I’m a DA down to my home interiors ha! </p>
<p>Laurie, under the paneling is a nightmare rather than walls, unfortunately. The paneling is covering up 135-year-old slat board and plaster. And probably holding in 135 years of rodent feces and dead rodents. (Sorry if that grosses anyone out!!) For context, we demolished and/or gutted 50% of our home last year due to natural disaster. We also lost all our furniture and possessions at that time. It will also likely be another year before my husband finishes the current renovations. (Moving is not an option for us.) Between the immense cost of replacing things and the current renovations, we have zero interest in doing anything more. Lol! </p>
<p>Joy, it can challenging to mesh the aesthetic of a home with our possessions. Hopefully you find a way to make it all sing together!!

<p>Jenni, I am going sensual and lush. My husband isn’t overly involved in the room. I ask his opinion, but he often has none. He dislikes throw pillows, extras, and Knick knacks in general. He’s rather minimal, though sentimental at times. So I have to kind of choose. Haha! </p>
<p>Eliza, I love your point about changing colors and things out seasonally! That’s very helpful to remember. Pine knots do not weep sap—or at least, they shouldn’t have the wood is properly cured or treated. Ours is very old, well treated, and covered in thick polyurethane. The only issue is the dark knots’ color could “bleed” through the paint. I’m honestly not sure if that bothers me or not. It could be cool and a bit different. Or it could look like a home Reno disaster haha! I just don’t know.

<p>Looking for a new house most are very modern. &nbsp;Think of that now. &nbsp;Our bedroom furniture and linens look dated now. &nbsp;I wish they could look more modern. &nbsp;We moved very little and bought a lot of the funishings already in the house. &nbsp;Gave away antiques. &nbsp;

<p>Just a thought...any idea what is under the paneling? If you are already doing drywall repair in other rooms, it might make sense to pull it off and prep the walls and paint.</p>
<p>How ever you manage to make the room lighter and brighter, it will be a huge uplift to your spirits, and add spaciousness.

<p>I would go with more restful, sensual colors and textures in a bedroom. It sounds like your home is pretty eclectic, with a different vibe in each room, so I could safely say, go for the theme you really want since the bedroom is the least public space in a home.&nbsp;</p>
<p>As for painting over the knotty pine, I say go for it. You may need a heavy primer for full coverage, if that's your goal (you could also go for a more whitewashed look, but that may be tricky depending on the colors and vibe you choose -- it can look very rustic and cottage-y). We painted over a huge dark red brick fireplace, and did wallpapered drywall panels over exposed pine ceilings in our dining room, and I'm sure some people would be aghast, but we were looking to tone down the "lodge" feeling of so much wood and introduce more "modern."</p>
<p>Good luck! That pillow in #6 really is darling.&nbsp;

<p>Fun discussion. Lots of great input and your home sounds like a deliberately evolving beauty that reflects your aesthetic. Nice not to be under time pressure. The furniture sounds special and I could see your idea for lighter walls making sense. The sensual lush scheme seems to refer back to other rooms in your house and would work well, as would the brighter ingenue scheme for a change of pace. Either way, with neutral walls, you aren’t completely locked in to either/or. Lots of folks change bedcovers and pillows seasonally, either for fun or more/less warmth. You can live with your choice for a while and then consider simple change outs as you wish. I have yet to read Suz’s article, but grew up with knotty pine kitchen cabinets; the challenge is real. We have had painters here use a product (Kilz?) for exactly the purpose of pre-treating knots in wood for painting. There is likely a way, though likely labor intensive. Not sure if knotty pine ‘weeps’. I admire your design ideas and ability to bring out the best in your house.

<p>I like the second palette better because it seems more like the colours that look good on you. Your style does seem quite “sensual and lush” itself, like you describe the second scheme. Rather like Sophia Loren.<br />
But of course it’s your husband’s bedroom too! So it depends on what he likes as well.

<p><b>Suz</b> thank you for the excellent article! Lots of things I’m noting from it. The caulk step is unexpected to me. Our paneling is tongue-in-groove, and heavily and thickly layered with polyurethane. I wonder if and how that will affect the need for caulk… hmm! </p>
<p>At any rate, my guess is we won’t approach the project until next year. We have a ton of work left on the kitchen and living room. All the drywall has yet to be sanded and painted, so doubting we would be able to fit in the bedroom too before the snow blows. Nevertheless, I’ll let you know how the pine panel painting progresses. (How that for an alliterative tongue twister?)

<p>Oh, thank you ladies!! This is all so helpful! &lt;3</p>
<p><b>Sal</b>, such good questions! My husband has left the bedroom entirely up to me. Having said that, we both tend to favor warmer colors for interior design. Having jade green and cherry pink probably isn't going to delight him, though he would let me do whatever I want without comment or raised eyebrow. The room has a lot of natural light. I honestly don't know if day or night feeling is more important to me... I do feel with the bedroom furniture we have that the 2nd sensual option would probably mesh better with it? But I could be wrong about that. (Interior design is very eclectic and intuitive for me.) I think overall, scheme 2 will feel the most relaxing to me. Scheme 1 is so fresh and lovely, but it feels almost energizing to me, which is not a feeling I like with a bedroom usually. &nbsp;</p>
<p><b>April</b>, ooo! Now I wish I had gotten two of the plum pillows!! I am really excited for my single pillow to arrive, nevertheless! :D&nbsp;</p>
<div><br /></div><div><b>Suz</b>, good to know about the knots bleeding through paint. I don't think it will matter to me. I am sure some people would be aghast that we are painting over knotty pine. I half love it and half hate the pine paneling. The visual warmth it adds nice and yet, having the entire room paneled &nbsp;makes the room feel claustrophobic and cave-like at times. And should we ever re-do the room, we wont' be able to salvage the paneling anyway. And I don't feel people are seeking out knotty pine this day and age, should we ever sell our home.&nbsp;So... I don't think it's any great loss to paint over it...?&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>I am already leaning toward the darker 2nd scheme, with plum, velvet pillows, warmer accents, etc. I feel it will be more relaxing. Our living room is burnt orange, turquoise, and charcoal, with lots of industrial metal. I need something a bit softer. Oh-- LOVE your idea for an Art Deco mirror!!! I am going to keep this in mind :D&nbsp;</div></p>

<p>Sal has raised some very good points.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I like the idea of lightening it up with light grey or cream walls to go with the bedspread. Knotty pine can be difficult to paint over -- the knots show through! But maybe there is a fix for that, or maybe it can become part of the aesthetic, as it does in a sort of cottage chic?&nbsp;</p>
<p>I think the combination of the dark wood furniture with golden accents, velvet pillows and textured spread, and lighter walls could work really well. The furniture would stand out and its detailing would be the focal point. Maybe add a deco-style mirror over the dresser?&nbsp;

<p>I think both could work - here are my comments:</p>
<p>1) I think a lighter bed room is nicer in the day - do you get much daylight in the room?&nbsp;&nbsp;<br />2) Is it more important that it feels cosy and romantic at night or light and romantic during the day?<br />3) Which does your partner like - my husband leaves 90% of the interior design to me but I do like to give him input on the bedroom as he spends as much time there as me.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>For me, I prefer the first scheme because I would enjoy it both day and night, and winter and summer.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>I would love your thoughts on a bedroom vibe.&nbsp;<div><br /></div><div>We are restoring our home after an environmental issue. Our living room is a blend of industrial and mid century.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>Our kitchen will be kind of a dark Art Nouveau bohemian feel, with dark cabinets, dark flooring, coral accents, and a copper tin ceiling,&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>That leaves the master bedroom. The bed frame has already been purchased. It's a heavily figured wood and the orange color and black grain figuring are reminiscent of tortoiseshell. The furniture is 1930s art deco figured wood dresser and 1930s art deco metal dresser. The room is smaller and paneled, floor, ceiling, and walls in knotty pine. I will likely paint the wood, regardless of which direction I go. In its current state the paneling makes the room feel very dark and heavy, so the walls will likely get a coat of paint in a vintage light grey or cream color regardless of which theme and scheme I go with.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>I'm already leaning one direction, but would love to hear your input! &lt;3&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>The bedspread is a ruffled affair in a light grey (photo 1).&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>I'm leaning two directions:&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>#1 Flirty, romantic, with a cooler green, pink, and red.
