When I first read the topic I thought it said OT: Help! How to wear an ankle bracelet. Which led to 'oh dear has Melissa gone all Lindsay Lohan on us?' (It's been a long week). Anyway, sport your brace proudly. And when people ask you about it, just make up some outrageous story about why you have to wear it. You may as well have a little fun with it.

Thank you all so much! It's very encouraging to have so much good advice, especially about just going with it. I think I was reluctant to just let it be because I don't really want to talk about it all the time. But you all are right, I can't really cover it up always, so I'll just have to get used to politely saying "It's too boring to even talk about" or something.

I have the brace on now, so I am getting a better idea of the mechanics--it seems like it will really only fit under (and it has to be under) my sneakers and maybe one or two other shoes, and it needs to be worn with socks. I'd love to post an action shot complete with neon sneakers, but it appears that the bf has absconded with the camera again.

Dusty and Frances, the brace is a stop-gap measure to try and arrest the problem until it declares itself more clearly. If the ankle doesn't start improving rapidly with the brace, then my doctor will reassess and we'll go from there. So I guess a few weeks?

Frances, my ankle monitoring device is on the OTHER ankle. Maybe I can ask Lindsay Lohan for some style tips about that.

Fathenry, I went ahead and ordered some interim pants. I guess I was holding out on buying new pants until the weight loss is done, but this injury has made me realize that it isn't really practical to go months and months without any pants!

Thanks again!

Oh, Melissa! Take care of that ankle.

And what Dusty said. Don't worry about covering it up. Just wear pretty outfits and shine from within.

I agree with the others that said to just go with it. You need to be comfortable and this isn't a permanent thing you have to work around.

OT - I do think you should treat yourself to some new pants to celebrate your weight loss though!

I am sorry you have to go through this, Melissa. Hopefully you do not need to wear it for a long time.
I agree with others: do not try to hide it as it will make you self conscious and less confident and this is what people notice. Just ignore it and make sure the rest of your outfit is nice.
Also wearing pants all the time is hard when it is so hot outside.
Good luck and get well soon!

Oh, this takes me back to my tendonitis injury a few years ago and the ugly recovery shoe I had to wear for a couple weeks. While you really can't disguise it, at least people are a little more solicitous about holding doors open and offering you a seat on public transportation. For how long do you have to wear it?

On the bright side, Melissa, at least you're not trying to disguise an ankle monitoring device!

Embrace the brace!

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I agree with Dusty and Kristine. If I were in your situation, I would try to figure out how to dress to accommodate the brace comfortably.

When my daughter had to wear leg braces for a year, she needed sneakers that were one or two sizes up from her regular size to accommodate them. Will your ankle brace fit on the outside of shoes or within? You might need to get some new, larger shoes to accommodate the braced foot? If so, have fun with that purchase.

Also, how long does your doctor think you'll have to wear the brace? For me, the longer I would have to wear it, the more changes I might make in how I dress so as to minimize it. If it's under a year, I think I'd just . . . embrace and not worry too much.

I'm sorry you've been battling ankle problems, and hope you're better soon!

Yeah, I don't think medical devices are ever fashion crimes. I would probably try to dress as normally as possible, otherwise you'll feel self conscious trying to hide it. But on the other hand if you need a reason to buy some new things, you found one!

Honestly? Just go with it. I had to wear a knee brace for about a month and I made zero effort to cover it up. I just treated it like it wasn't there, for the most part (well, I did have make sure that my pants fit over it - my skinnies were pretty much a no-go for that month). You'll have to make some concessions in shoes to accommodate it (and possibly for proper healing), but that would be the most I'd worry about. Maybe instead of emergency pants shopping, you should look for a pair of sneakers that will kind of work with your current clothes.

Melissa, that sounds tricky. Maybe you should try it with some of your shoes first before making any decisions? It looks like it might be able to fit over the outside of dress shoes. (Maybe that's just wishful thinking.)

Oh noes! I've been battling an ankle problem, and my doc says I have to wear one of these:

http://www.leedergroup.com/pro.....nkle-brace

Not exactly fashion forward, but I have to suck it up for my health. But how the heck am I going to wear this thing? Any clever ideas for lessening the fashion crimes I'll commit while wearing it?

I think one has to wear sneakers with this thing, so of course the only pair I have here in Berkeley are an insane bright green that I got on super sale because the color is so eye-searing! They will look...interesting paired with my mostly purple and red shirts.

I might be able to sort of hide the brace away under pants...if I had any. Due to recent weight loss, I have exactly zero pairs of pants that fit and are not pajama pants.

I am thinking maybe I should go emergency pants shopping and just try to hide the brace under my pants leg, but any and all suggestions are welcome.
