Thanks, Laurinda!

I had a good exercise week. Two Zumba classes for cardio and three weight workouts. I threw some plyometric intervals in with the weights.

@ Alicat -- I will try to keep the thread up to date, and anyone here, I'm happy if you post the weekly notice if I forget.

@ Anne -- KUTGW = Keep Up The Good Work

@ Mary K -- Everyone needs to find the best diet for them, for their health, philosophy and long-term way of life. Aside from weight, blood triglycerides and HDL seem to be the most important risk factors. If McDougall works for you, great!

Anne - no one can resist Pad Thai, so don't worry about it! Mmmm...now I want some, hahaha. 2.23 is a great HM time too! Have you done any longer races, like the full marathon?

Well I managed my 3 runs, 1 pump and one spin class, plus a separate arm weights session fitted in before and after the spin class.

Eating took a dive on the weekend when I had a kids' party to attend, had to cook several delicious things for other people (bowl licking temptation) and succumbed to Pad Thai takeaway. But as it turned out I was PM, so I should be back on keel soon!

What is "KUTGW"

Runner rae I am in awe of your 1:51 HM (seeing as my PB is 2:23!!)

Mo I did a half marathon in 2011 too! Mine was in May. It was actually my first ever race at any distance. I've been running for about 10 years but never really got around to doing one. So I just decided that year I was doing it, trained myself. Are you doing them often? How's your time? I did mine in 1:51, which I was pretty happy with, though I have nothing to compare. They say you can take your half and double it plus 10 minutes to get your full marathon time, but I don't think I could do a full in under 4 hours! Well see come next May I guess.

Rae, I run more here in FL, and less in Tahoe due to the weather. Since I have no treadmill, don't go to a gym, that leaves several months a year off limits to snow.
I'm not a long distance kind of gal - usually around 3 miles, 3 times a week. I did also weigh more before a triathlon (123).
I try my best to maintain within 3 pounds of weight. I was 117.5 when I left Tahoe, but have been a good 3 pounds over while here (and a half size bigger than most my clothes).

Mary K, you will see your goal, I know it!

Not that anyone really cares, I'm sure, but here's the last 3 years . . . I can see the dips when home in CA, and then back up again in FL. Ah, well. Feb '11 was my half marathon.

How did I miss this thread?

I have read and appreciated Gary Taubes, but the book that really blew me away was "The End of Overeating" by David Kessler, which is about how processed food in America today (including restaurant food) is designed to be actually addicting! I agree that it matters less WHAT you eat than that it's as close to its natural state as possible.

I am continuing to be super happy eating low fat vegan, a la Dr. John McDougall. I totally get that it's not for most people but I feel great! My weight is hovering between 120 and 125 and I would love to get it below 120 but it's slow going. I'm only 5'2" so I can't weigh much at all if I want my clothes to fit comfortably!

I managed three boot camp classes, one tap class, and only one trainer session this week. Not terrible, but not what I was shooting for. Hopefully next week will be better!

Good job Mo! I'm still over 120 by half a pound, but its not really my goal to lose more. I started pre preg at 117 so I might get back to that but if not I don't care. I'm just trying to get ready for my marathon. I tend to weigh a bit more when I'm running a lot anyway, probably cause I eat like a horse! Haha!

So how much do you run? Do you have a goal weight in mind? 120 must be close because you look fairly tall in your photos.

Well, I'm happy to say I closed out the week seeing that ever elusive sub 120 number on the scale this morning! by half a pound, but hey, it counts lol. But tomorrow is the BF's one day off and we usually go out to eat and/or have champagne Sunday. My hope is to still be under 120 come Monday.
Got in several runs, some walking, and managed the wine pretty well. Did sporadic nighttime planks. need to get better with the strength moves next week.

I know for me the Gary Taubes approach is the way to go--I could never do it 100% (I will always want to have some indulgences like sugar). but veggies, fats, proteins, lower carbs overall--yep, I feel much better when I eat that way.

Rae, I read In Defense of Food first. I tend to read health and nutrition literature for kicks and have read just about everything since picking up Covert Bailey's Fit or Fat in the late 80's. They all have something to take out of them, even if it's not 100%. I learned about ATP and mitochondria in Fit or Fat, although we now know it's not really fat alone that makes us fat as we thought. (I should have been a scientist instead of a mixologist!)

Michael Pollan makes excellent points about eating REAL food, not food-like substances. I think most USians would be healthier if they took his advice to only eat what their grandmothers (or great-grandmothers?) recognized as food.

Anyway, suffice to say I *know* most of the right things to do and eat. But doing them, and eating them, are different than knowing!!

I read both of them too, you're right the second is a much easier read. But yes, the science is fascinating. I can't believe it's not more of a health crisis. But yes, you'd think after reading both books and being so shocked I could kick my habit...but it's so hard! I really am addicted. I did cut it all out for a week and I felt much better at the end...although not at the beginning, I had a headache for 3 days. But I can't do sugar in moderation, so it's all or nothing it seems. Sigh...why does it have to be so tasty?

I'm a huge fan of Gary Taubes!

"Good Calories Bad Calories" changed my life. As a scientist I appreciate the in depth history and pages of references, but for my family I recommend "Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It" as an easier read.

Taubes is now working on a book on sugar (I bet Dr. Robert Lustig was a big influence) and he started Nusi.org ( Nutrition Science Initiative). "NuSI is unencumbered by bureaucracy or by an obligation to do anything other than find the truth. We can move quickly and efficiently to execute a novel plan: harness the talents of the best scientists in the field and channel their skills into one concerted effort to generate reliable knowledge, once and for all, on the nature of a healthy diet. "

Laurinda I have just read Gary Taubes books! Have you read them? Very interesting, and certainly put a kick into me. I find the whole history of the subject fascinating, and you're right, very angering at the same time. So much that's touted as "bad" is not, and sugar is so bad and it seems to be covered up.

Mo- You are on the right track!

Kristin- Nothing ventured nothing gained. I've seen pedometers at the dollar store, if that helps with the expense.

Alicat- I found this weekly thread very inspirational, hope it was ok to post it this week. As a corollary to what you posted, I've also heard that depression can be tied in with feelings of hopelessness. Taking control of one's health is a great step for many reasons.

Ariadne- Veggie Queen !

CGD- Taking good care of yourself sounds very important at this point.

Rae- Of course you are welcome! An interesting article just came out by Gary Taubes showing Big Sugar's PR campaigning to minimize the public's notion of sugar's ill health effects. My apologies if the topic is too political for YLF, but I find anger over being lied to very motivating to keep sugar out of my diet.

Anne- Hurrah for you - KUTGW!

Well done Mo ( I had to google that pace to work out what it was in km!). I have just started a new campaign to get my 10km race time down to under an hour, after doing my worst race time ever a couple of weeks ago (partly because it was hot)

I am also being pretty strict with the eating in the lead up to the family wedding - seeing if I can move away from being in the top of my range - going well so far.

Aim this week - 3 runs following programe plus pump, spin and maybe one other class like balance
so far - 2 runs, 1 pump

Can I join in? It's nice to have others to keep you accountable.

I trying to get back in running shape after having my son 5 months ago. My goal is to start training for a marathon after Christmas, and do the run in May.

Food wise, I really need to cut down on the sugar. I'm addicted and it wrecks havoc on my energy levels.

Goals this week are to cut out the sugar, and get in 2-3 more god runs. Did 2 so far this week.

Lots of stress going on for me so that's my reason why I haven't been posting mostly due to budget cuts and pending job loss. I won't know more until later this month whether I have a job or not. Meanwhile, I've been stress eating bad food but trying to run and go to the gym although not very consistently.

Laurinda, thanks for starting the thread!

Overall this month I'm focusing on stress reduction through exercise, meditation and time management. Yesterday I took concrete steps to deal with two situations that I've been angsting about, and I felt so much better today. One of my friends is a therapist, and she says that "action is the antidote to anxiety." I think she's right.

Here are my workouts so far:

Monday: Cardio/sculpt intervals done with a home video (The Firm: Total Muscle Shaping)

Tuesday: Zumba class (Zumba is a natural high for me -- love it!)

Good luck with your goals, everyone!

My work-out idea kindda backfired. Apparently I'm more out of shape than I thought. I'm going to try to do the Back on Pointe workout only 3 days this week and see how it goes from there. I'm still going to walk 4 days this week and (hopefully) get a pedometer sometime this week.

Thanks for starting! I tend to do well 80% of the time and then just undo all that over the weekend. I am tired of playing see saw with the same pound over and over and over every weekend. So, my goal is to keep my weekends better under control. Most notably, I am waging a war on my muffin top lol. Instead of new purchases, I want the ones I have to look even better on!

I will say I was happy with a sub 9 min/mi pace in my 5K this last Saturday! Wasn't sure after the big ankle injury last year how I'd snap back or not.

Continuing with several runs each week and strength moves in the evenings. But I really need to reign in the carbs and wine.
