I'm totally going to Hades on the healthy habits. I haven't been doing what I should be doing with exercise. I have a lot of good excuses, but it has been way too long. Honestly, I've been super stressed and finding a new gym and replacing a heart rate monitor that I HAVE to have just feels like more stress. I've just been feeling really poorly and having problems catching my breath and the last thing I want to do is exercise, which is a bad sign because I love to work out. The people in my life that I need love and support from have been royally stressing me out and that "emotional hurt" type stress tends to have an impact because it is personal. I'm still feeling ill from the stress, even though everyone else has been able to move on and are no longer stressed.

I think I need some accountability to get moving.

I'm with you on the Paleo-style way of eating, velvetychocolate. Depending on who in the field you follow, there's a push for higher fat eating -- as long it's the right type of fat. That way of eating definitely allows you to eat what you want without counting anything; you just basically eat meat, veggies (nonstarchy and starchy), fish, eggs, and fruit. Chris Kressler has a moderate take of the Paleo/Primal/Ancestral way of eating that makes sense to me:
http://chriskresser.com/9-step.....eat-toxins

His food pyramids in the second part of the series are particularly interesting.

Diana, as far as my cleanse goes, it's one that my naturopath prescribes. It's a 3-week cleanse. The first and last weeks you cut back a lot on animal proteins, just eating lamb basically. And no gluten or dairy, but I already do that. The 2nd (middle) week you cut out all animal protein. And there's other stuff involved too that's not diet related (thing to clear out other parts of your body). I did it two years ago and it was great for resetting certain cravings and clearing out toxins. I've kind of fallen of the clean eating bandwagon so it's time to cleanse again!

Christieanne, my husband is Mr. Butter too! Ack! Drives me crazy.

My eating has been kinda all over the map, since I've had a very busy last few weeks, but I've been attempting to keep up with my running to mitigate the effects.

I just did a metric half marathon today, and even though the course volunteers goofed and sent the half runners on an extra mile-long out-and-back, I feel pretty good for having run 9.1 miles. I ran the 9.1 in the same time I ran 8.1 a year ago, so that's progress. And the best part -- no pain at all today! My PT sessions and stretching are working.

VC, so sorry to hear about your issues! That must be super frustrating, but good for you for trying to figure out the problem.

IK, I don't have a scale either. They make me crazy. To wit, at easter I was in my future in-laws house, where there is a scale in the bathroom. I couldn't resist stepping on it, even though I knew it was a really bad idea, as I had just eaten a huge and very salty meal. I was, not surprisingly, NOT happy with the number, and proceeded to weigh myself every time I went to the bathroom at their house over the next 5 hours. (The "good" news is that I managed to lose 3 pounds over those 5 hours. LOL). I don't like that feeling of being tied to the scale, so I too just go by clothes fit and how I look naked.
I'm glad you're no longer doing the 1200 calorie thing, by the way. It just does not seem sustainable and may even be borderline dangerous given that you are seriously working out as well.

Just for the record, I wanted to be sure to mention that my 'no sensitive seven' addition to my standard Paleo-ish ongoing maintenance plan is a temporary measure. I'll do this just for a couple of weeks (maybe up to four weeks) to root out potential food intolerance issues.

And IK, guacamole is a really healthy food. I'll be keeping that in my plan too.

I lost over a hundred pounds without counting a single calorie, so I'm not entirely convinced that one has to go to 1200 calories! GAH - how are you supposed to fuel your workouts?

Good luck everyone

I didn't realize people had an "emergency weight!" I haven't owned a scale in 20 years, and basically just judge by how my clothes fit. Many of my friends obsess about the scale going down the way others do about their stocks, and I just didn't want it.

But I did have to buy a scale for my Body Transformation, so... now I have one.

I WAS trying to hit 1200 calories a day over 6 meals (haven't managed that low yet, by the way) and burning at least 200 calories during workouts. I've since amped down from that, it's not sustainable. But I continue to eat very, very lean protein-based meals. All processed bread (waaah!) are out. The good news is that my blood sugar seems to stay very regular on this!

The bad (?) news is that lean protein is super dry. Yecch. Guacamole is my downfall. It tastes good on everything!

Thanks for starting this !!

I am cheating because I am in the LiveStrong program to recondition cancer patients. So I show up a couple of times a week for 90 mins. of exercise. I am doing some things on my own and I have also started cooking again. I have been going through my Cooking Light issues ( I have 4 ) and cooking in a much healthier way.

I also downloaded " Kitchen Counter Cooking School" which has fab ways to cook a healthy meal in no time. Usually 30 minutes with everyday stuff. I LOVE this book.

At this point, my weight is not an issue for me ( though I have gone from a size 2/4 to a 10/12. It is because of my meds and there is nothing that i can do. But I CAN exercise and eat healthy so that I feel better !

Oh my. That sounds pretty harsh Velvet. I know how frustrating it is to have the pounds come back even when you seem to be doing everything right. I've been blaming it on age but it could be food intolerances.

Good luck trying to figure it out. I found food tracking on fitday.com really helped me identify the foods that were problematic.

I see a lot of runners on this thread. I am trying to slowly build up with the running so it isn't painful but it is taking a long time to get there and I am finding I am winded after almost no time at all. I do plan to persevere.

Congrats to all of you for sticking with it.

Thank you for starting this thread. I am having a bit of a tough time with this lately. Post Christmas, I gained just a few (two or three I think) pounds, which is totally normal after having a few too many mini-splurges. This isn't usually a problem, as I can usually get this right off within a week or so.

Didn't happen this time, and I gained even more weight, even when I got back on track, food-wise. So I'm past my "emergency" weight ...and pretty upset about it.

Three or four times in the past six weeks I have been able to get the 'extra' weight gain off, only to have it come right back on for no real reason. The thing is - I'm extremely gluten intolerant, and I suspect that I am dealing with a low-level of gluten somewhere, but cannot figure out quite where. I have all the usual symptoms that I'd get when I accidentally eat something that contains gluten, but cannot find the culprit!

So what I'm dealing with is the extra three pounds that came on after the Christmas holidays, which normally I can get right back off within a week or so, PLUS an additional six or seven pounds that came out of nowhere, without going off plan or anything. To explain a bit further, when I do accidentally get glutened, it is usual for me to gain five to eight pounds and experience a lot of stomach upset - this can take up to two weeks to resolve. Like I said, I thought I'd dealt with these extra suspected gluten pounds three times already, only to have them come back.

At this point, the only thing I can do is go on an elimination diet that once worked for me. It's tough, but I'm pretty much at my wit's end here. I generally follow a low-carb, Paleo style diet, and that's how I lost a lot of weight. I also have to maintain a 100% gluten-free diet at all times, even if I'm going to splurge and have a treat or a dessert or something.

This time, I'll be combining my usual lower-carb, Paleo-style diet with a 'no sensitive seven' foods plan. Very tough, but it worked for me once before. According to Dr. Elson M. Haas, author of "The False Fat Diet", the sensitive seven most commonly reactive foods are: dairy products, wheat, corn, eggs, soy, peanuts, sugar.

Normally I don't eat wheat ever anyway, and I don't eat sugar much at all due to my lower-carb, Paleo-style diet. I also never eat corn or peanuts. The change would be to eliminate soy and eggs. This means I would not have eggs at breakfast, would not use mayonnaise (the jarred kind I use has eggs and soy I think). I also wouldn't use my gluten-free tamari (gluten free soy sauce). I'd forget about the occasional dab of organic ketchup that I'd use once in a rare while (in a meatloaf recipe) etc. I'd also forget the occasional dab of butter or tiny bit of parmesan in a recipe.

At the same time, I'll lower my carb intake to be a 'diet' level, rather than a maintenance level. This means no fruit. I'd been able to have a bit of fruit (low-carb berries) here and there with no problem, but now that I'm battling too many of these extra pounds, it's out. No nuts either (sometimes I'll put toasted almonds in salad or use almond flour in a recipe).

It sounds hard-core, but I don't know what else to do. In the meantime, it's still a healthy plan (for me). I'm looking at very lean meats, fish, olive oil, lower carb vegetables, salsa, mustard etc. I did this a few years ago when battling unexplained stomach aches, with the encouragement and support of a wonderful PA at the gastro's office. We knew back then that wheat was a problem for me, but I was having a tough time rooting it out...so I tried this 'no sensitive seven' idea as a way of eliminating pretty much ALL processed food, and it totally worked. I was then able to add things back in, one at a time, and very carefully. That worked too. The only thing I couldn't really add back was wheat and most dairy foods. After awhile, I could handle a bit of butter here and there and a teensy bit of grated parmesan in a recipe didn't seem to bother me.

Wish me luck? I have some mystery pounds and those same pains. Meanwhile, I *didn't* go off plan and I managed to get them off at least three times, only to have it happen again and again.

The only food I will eat that has a bar code on it will be olive oil, salsa, plain mustard, unblended spices. Oh, and I'll keep my morning coffee, thank you! I also like Lipton Pure Leaf Unsweetened Real Brewed Iced tea occasionally (how else was I going to ditch Diet Coke?). Oh, and I'll likely still put kalamata olives in my salad or maybe some capers on my salmon.

I guess it'll be the No Bar-Code Plan ...

Thanks for the chance to get this out, I now feel like I have some hope here

Well, it's obviously early yet but my check-in for now requires the honesty that I just had a piece of pastry and a latte for breakfast, LOL. However, I will be going out for a walk and hopefully will do at least 3-4.5 miles (it's a loop around the pond). Exercise is not a problem for me--food is! But I am heartened that I ate and enjoyed all my vegetables yesterday.

Everything is Boston Marathon 24/7 around here, and I would love to do some cheering on or related activity, which always inspires me (and is fun, too), but with the predicted heat I'm not sure if it'll be wise...

Wow, you are all so inspiring! Lots of good food and exercise tips here.

Mochi and Christieanne, I actually eat my cereal/granola with greek yogurt most of the time, which is very protein-rich. I don't like the taste of milk anyway so it's perfect for me. I buy 2% Fage - the unsweetened kind is far superior to flavored -just add sweeteners/fruit/etc yourself if you want. It's shocking how much sugar is in flavored yogurt!

Anna, congrats on losing the 5 pounds!

Shannon, I hope your work situation calms down soon!

Mani, wow, that buffet sounds enormous (and delicious)! Good luck with the move... those are always painful, but I guess at least lugging heavy boxes around is good exercise!

Sylvie, I also have a total lack of motivation to go to the gym. What worked for me was getting a cheap mini-elliptical machine for my home. I have no excuse not to exercise when the machine is right in front of me!

Rae, did you get in to the see the doctor to get checked out after the accident? I agree that weights are probably not the best idea right now, but a little exercise is probably OK, right?

Cciele, which cleanse are you doing? I have a friend who did the three-day juice cleanse lately, and he said it was super tough/intense but he felt extremely healthy and inspired to make healthy food choices afterwards.

Yes thank you for inspiring us to stay on track!

I have had some weird health issues last two weeks - major stomach stuff. So, trying to change the diet and keeping away form the things two teens and a very skinny DH can eat with no problem.
Been cutting down caffeine (coffee) which is terribly hard for me (substitute is green tea - with one cup of coffee in the AM). Drinking tons of water.
Also a healthy breakfast, lots of fiber (vegies/fruit/whole grains), low starch/carbs, low dairy except yogurt, low meat but adding more fish and protein from beans and lentils.
DH cooks with a ton of butter - I had no idea until I really watched him - so now I had to tell him to cool it. He was restaurant trained so he is complaining about that.
Also adding flaxseed oil (lemon flavored is tasty actually) to a lunchtime smoothie.
Cut most alcohol (had a gin and tonic out at dinner tonight and it went straight to my head!).

I am feeling better with the dietary changes - missing cheese and I may need to add back milk for cereal soon as oatmeal is boring me. I think I might see some weight loss with some of the changes as well. And so far, the family (other than Mr. Butter) is fine with low meat at home. They can have beef, etc. while I just skip it easily.

Hopefully with the weather improving (I hope) I can get outside and walk. PT is over now and I have feel use of left leg again but have not "test drove" it with major exercise. Kind of nervous about that but I think I can handle it. Still doing my PT exercises in meantime.

Since moving home some 7 weeks ago my fitness has been totally derailed. I've run exactly once! We have a home universal gym but I've only used it about half a dozen times. I do ab moves and push ups most nights before bed though. I will say my food intake has changed drastically. Much more home cooked, full fat food (thanks to a BF who's a great cook and now has the time to do so!) and a lot less frozen and convenience foods. So, despite a drastic reduction in activity, having a more protein based food plan has me down a couple pounds under my previous goal range. Good lesson here for me - real food is important. But I can't wait to get running again - if it would stop snowing already.

I've gotten some pounds creeping up on me that I can't seem to shake, so I'm going to start a cleanse in a few weeks and also join a gym (which I haven't done in AGES). I'm checking one out that seems like a martial-arts version of CrossFit -- we'll see ow that goes!

I'm super lazy compared to everyone else, but I'm grateful for the thread! After binging on vacation, I'm back to the weight where I juuuust started getting excited to fit into some pants again. Hoping to keep it going!

I signed up for the "crash course" from Precision Nutrition, the site that Suz mentioned on Dana's before/after thread. Mochi, like your plan, they suggest adding one new habit at a time. My morning weights have been interrupted by car accident related back pain, but I bought some foods to try and make myself a recommended recipe or two. DH and I are hoping to do a nightly walk together as well, but that was interrupted by the accident as well. We did walk a lot today, though, to keep me from being too stiff.

I have to admit that I have fallen off the exercise bandwagon. Last week I didn't work out all because in the beginning of the week I was being lazy and by the end of the week I was sick. The week before I think I worked out twice. The week before that I worked out three times and really felt like I was getting back on track.

My weight is up over my "desired max" although not all the way back to the highest it's ever been. I know that a concentrated few weeks of working out should get it back into a reasonable zone and I need to cut down on the "treats".

During the weekdays, I need to make sure I work out during my lunch hour or immediately after work if I don't have plans to go home immediately. Once I get home, there's just no way I can convince myself to go to the gym.

I should be healthy and ready to work out again by next Tuesday. Back to continuing to strive for 3-4x/week.

Yikes! Thanks, Diana --- I'd actually *forgotten* what I'd stopped doing at the start of the year due to a rabid sinus infection! I need to get back to my pranayam (yoga breathing exercises) for my sanity (they're my meditation stand-in) and my metabolism (call it controlled hyperventilation rolled into static ab crunches!)

I've been trying to get rid of a pesky 4lbs all winter, and had managed to lose 2... but I've been doing more restaurant & hotel reviews, and bad weather has kept the pool off-limits, which is really a bit of a spanner. No one loses weight at a breakfast buffet with five live stations while trying to 'do justice' to it. My Good Friday breakfast consisted of: Chinese dumplings, bacon and sausages, curry with Indian noodles, miso soup and Japanese spinach balls, birchermuesli, sourdough slice and croissant, cheese, Thai sesame balls... and a quarter of a pineapple to help digest the lot! I'm not sure how I managed to eat lunch after that, but I did. No surprise, those 2 lbs are back again!

I have, however, made significant progress on the 'remember to drink water' and cut back on caffeine' fronts. I manage to empty 2 bottles most days, and I have the coffee habit down to one crucial cup --- I'll admit, eked out with a couple of cups of tea (one green or herbal, one black).

What helps, as for MaryK, is that the SO is travelling too. Which basically means I'm stuck at home (I don't drive) with either an hour's walk to the nearest grocery or supermarket, or at the mercy of the local greengrocer's cart. Significantly larger amounts of vegetables and fruits have been eaten, vs far fewer 'filler' carbohydrates and no trans fats! I find I'm also a lot more energetic this way, though I'm still trying to stabilize my hypoglycemic tendencies (and wondering whether to worry about peri-menopause, because I'm certainly not diabetic).

Moving madness begins today, and I hope it'll bring me closer to a park to walk in.

I've finally lost and am able to keep off the 5 lbs I gained in Mexico all the way back in January. I did go to the gym this morning. But this afternoon I derailed it all with my food and drink choices.
I want to lose another 4 lbs before I go to San Francisco in May.

I go running a couple days a week on my lunch hour and then usually another 1 or 2 times on the weekend. Lately, I've been really slacking off though. Partly because the weather has been horrible on the weekends and partly just because of having too much to do. I've been doing some weight training DVD's at least one evening too. Maybe this thread will keep me inspired to keep up with my running and be consistent with the weight training.

Thanks Diana for starting this again - it helps to keep me accountable. I'm back to running and was doing very well going to the gym at lunch time and then doing my long runs on the weekend but unfortunately the crazy busy time at work lately has derailed my lunch hour workouts (I haven't taken a lunch break in 4 weeks now!) so the only exercising I'm getting is on the weekends. It's not enough. We're still short staffed next week so will be more of the same but then I'm hoping to get totally back on track.

Way to go everybody!

Excellent thread, Diana! Thanks for reviving it. As part of the mentality I'm studying up on for an upcoming weight-loss plan, I'm trying to introduce one habit per week. This week, for food it's been trying to make sure I drink at least 8 cups of water per day. From Monday I want to try the whole week to eat a protein-rich breakfast. (I usually grab a bowl of cereal.) Without it being a new "rule", I've been eating a ton of vegetables and more protein than usual throughout the day...though my sugar consumption is still very high. I'll be grappling with that later--probably better to trick myself into weaning off sugar rather than going cold turkey.

Exercise right now is just walking a lot, but I'd like to be more methodical about that too, and start logging what I'm doing and pushing myself to do a bit more each week. I've recently gone back to Pilates and want to try for 2-3 times a week. With the normal city walking I do, that should be sufficient, and soon I'll be gardening as well.

I wish I could do something about my sleep issues, because they're having a huge impact on my well-being, unfortunately....also, some sort of meditation or other stress-relieving method would be great if I can incorporate that.

MaryK, your schedule sounds intense!

Makrame and Dianthus, I am always impressed by runners! My knees hate me, so I can't run... it's such good exercise though. As an aside, the Boston Marathon is on monday so I may go down and cheer. It's supposed to be in the high 80's though - I feel so bad for the poor runners!

Kelly, muscle weighs more than fat... so it's possible that you're becoming stronger and smaller, but your weight is not changing. Hey, as long as the clothes fit, right?

Unfortunately, I think I'm at my new "normal" weight. I've been keeping up with my cardio and doing some body weight resistance training at home but haven't got the scale to budge (except in the wrong direction!) Worse comes to worse, I'll renew my gym membership and/or start doing some exercise classes. I'm also going to buckle down in the kitchen--more fruits and veggies, please!

It's funny because although I know I'm over my ideal weight, I don't feel terribly anxious about it. Perhaps that's part of the problem? Of course, I may feel differently as swim suit season approaches ; P

I have been trying to lose the weight I gained in winter but haven't been overly successful. I am blaming perimenopause. I am following weight watchers quite closely and only fell off the wagon over the easter weekend. I have also been going to the gym three or four times per week to walk/run. It has only been a month and a half. I started just walking and am running about 2 miles in intervals. It is a slow process after doing nothing for too long but I am getting there. I am going to check for a 5 km run in June or so as a goal.

Glad to hear you are doing well!

I did a 9 mile run today, which always makes me feel like I have accomplished something. I love running in the spring - there were cows and horses around, lots of people on bikes etc. One older gentleman passed me on his bike twice (going in the opposite direction first and then he caught up with me on his way back) and commented "this is a long trek"! Made me feel better as I was huffing and puffing on my 6th or 7th mile.

Unfortunately, whenever I train for a race, I gain some weight. Need to watch my food intake!

Thanks for starting this, Diana! I am freaking out because I have gained a few pounds and am approaching my super emergency red-lights-flashing-sirens-screaming weight. All my clothes still fit but not necessarily as comfortably as I'd like, so I want to buckle down and get back to my super-happy-comfy weight!

This week Hubby was home so I slacked off on the exercise and ate and drank more than usual (see "red-lights-flashing-sirens screaming," above), but starting on Monday he will be on the road during the week and I can cut back on the goodies and step up the exercise.

My plan for the week is:

Eat sensibly
Two private sessions with Trainer Dave
Two tap dancing classes
Minimum three boot camp classes (shooting for four!)

And I am pleased to report that I went to boot camp class this morning!

We haven't had one of these threads for a while so I thought I'd start one. How is everyone doing w/ the healthy habits?

I'm still keeping up w/ my 3-4X a week exercise regimen - usually I do ~30' on the elliptical plus some free weights - and am definitely feeling stronger and more toned. I'm back to my "normal" size now, although I wouldn't mind losing a bit more!

I also wanted to share Cynthia's latest post with you all too, which I found super inspiring. I want to be able to do those horizontal pull ups!
