Mander, my mom had that once or twice -- I think they called it an ocular migraine? I have even had that a couple of times after very vigorous exercise in the heat -- everything around me got wavery as though huge ceiling fans were waving my surroundings about, and it was quite scary.

My husband's migraines have involved loss of sight, numbness in the face and tongue, and feeling like he couldn't make words. His ex-wife told me she remembered that he used to get them after playing basketball when he was really young (22 or so), but he had forgotten about it until they hit him again a couple of year ago, so they seem to come and go with no rhyme or reason, but I find it interesting that strenuous exercise has been part of the scenario.

Anna, I'll be thinking about you and hoping your doc has encouraging news for you on Thursday!

What a strange experience! I've never had a proper migraine as far as I know, but I did once experience the strange moving aura around the edges of everything I looked at. I thought there was something wrong with my eye but the doctor suggested migraine. Never had any other symptoms, though.

Hope it turns out to be something easily treatable!

What a scary thing to go through.

A big THANK YOU from me that an allergic reaction to an antibiotic, involving swollen tongue, was mentioned. I tend to pooh pooh grown son's every little complaint but when I read that I looked up an allergy to the antibiotic he's on and took him right off it. His usual doctor was off that day, family pharmacist who's very concientious and knows him from babyhood didn't have the liquid needed, the pharmacist elsewhere did not speak to me and there is no patient guide in the bottle. Nobody looked anything up about this - there's a 5-10% crossover with patients allergic to penicillin. Eeek. We are all stupid - but I am lucky in finding this thread.

Anna, no advice except make sure you follow this through to be sure you know the cause. Trouble is these symptoms can be indicative of a number of things so while its probably a migraine as suggested you need to be sure. I have been thinking of you all day and if you don't object will be praying for you in the hope of this all working it self out quickly.

Anna, how scary for you! ((Hugs))

I suffer from migraines a lot, unfortunately, and have had parts of my face go numb before. I've never had that happen to my tongue/throat, but it wouldn't surprise me if you did have just a particularly bad migraine.

I hope your doctors are able to figure out what's going on ASAP. Not knowing can be really scary and upsetting.

Lots more hugs from me.

ETA: What Isabel said strikes a chord with me too. Some migraines don't hurt per se, but they can really mess you up in other ways...I second the recommendation of seeing a neurologist.

Anna, I have a history of migraines which first started at age 41. At one point they were so severe I was hospitalized twice in the same month. I have had all of the classic migraine symptoms especially severe nausea. I have also had the feeling of a loss for words, confusion, and my tongue not working properly. Although I don't recall swelling when this happened.

I still get these moments of a loss for words and confusion. As well as migraines. But rarely now. I stopped taking certain meds which aggravated this symptom. It is a really scary feeling, like you are losing your brain.

I did have severe facial and lip swelling (moderate tongue swelling) three times and each time it was hives, there is something I am allergic to in August or September or it could have been fake tanner. When I had hives, I had no confusion/loss for words, just a lot of swelling.

So you're not alone in having migraines or these symptoms. I appreciate your sharing this information, and I hope you are OK!

Oh should say that migraines alone are not dangerous unless you are driving or doing something potentially dangerous and you become confused. For me the confusion is always around speech and word finding, never function. I don't know about other people though.

Anna, I didn't even have to finish your post and I knew immediately ( after reading your scan result ) that it was a migraine, possibly what is known as a complex migraine. It has happened to me several times over the last 10 years where I have ended up in the ER. One of my best friends suffers from the same thing....she doesn't get the intense pain but her symptoms are very similar to strokes, as are mine with pain and without. I once was very confused and could understand everything people were saying to me but I couldn't think of the words to respond. When I tried to speak, apparently I was not making sense. I was rushed to the hospital. I knew it was a migraine ( I have had this since I was a teenager) but I couldn't communicate it and that was new. My face and tongue felt numb too. My husband was called and they started running down all the tests they were going to run because the ER was convinced it was a stroke. They wanted to give me medicine. My husband told them no, that it was a migraine and that they needed to give me something for a migraine, fast. Once they confirmed, with my migraine specialist that this was the case, they gave me migraine meds via IV. After a few hours, I felt better and they released me, but my lips and cheeks felt numb for the whole next day. Again, totally normal for me when this type of thing happens to me. Sometimes my gums feel numb.

My advice is, see a neurologist who specializes in headaches. Not all migraine suffers have pain. They will figure it out and either confirm or not. But, I have gone through that scenario several times. Also something similar happened recently on tv :

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/.....16pqJgmPFI

Anna, I am glad you are a medical professional. Hopefully this will mean you and your difficult to diagnose symptoms will be less likely to be dismissed than the average Jane off the street. In my limited experience, symptoms tend to be viewed as they are on the TV series, *House* and like the Blind Men & the Elephant story: What one sees is based on one's specialty. Neurologists see a neurological problem; rheumatologists see an autoimmune problem, etc. Since an allergy has been hypothesized, I'm wondering if you could also get a referral to an allergist so that you can be tested more extensively?

how scary! I am glad to hear you are feeling much improved. I will put in a second (third) vote for allergy concerns. My father and my sister and I are developing them to all sorts of things we never had trouble with before. It isn't always hives etc, so sometimes hard to connect esp. Since testing doesn't necessarily show accurately either. All the best in figuring this out!

How fortunate you have a medical connection, but it sounds incredibly scary. It does sound to me like allergic reaction - my dad had a similar experience in reaction to shellfish (which he'd eaten all his life). Don't know specifically about the tongue numbness, but the rest is similar.

Yikes, Anna!
I'm so glad you're doing better- that must have been frightening!

It sounds like a visit to a neurologist is in order to help figure out how to avoid episodes like that in the future.

Please do keep us posted.

Anna, this sounds so scary! I am so glad that they have ruled out a stroke. It does sound as if a migraine could be at play (ugh, so to speak) or an allergy (or both). I do hope you get to the bottom of it.

OMG! Im *so* glad the tests came back negative! (even though it's frustrating.) I wonder if you may have a slight case of Dystonia...when my sister first got it, her tongue would get twisted up, making it difficult to speak, drink or eat. She had a lot of trouble swallowing also and said her mind was foggy. Its controlled right now with some strong meds, thank God. Please keep us informed! You are in our thoughts and prayers...
