Phew! :-)</p> <p>My eldest child had his tonsils and adenoids out just before his fifth birthday. He turned from being a constantly sick little boy into a thriving, healthy, robust child. From being on antibiotics monthly for recurrent throat infections, he hasn't had a course of antibiotics in OVER four years! He also grew a couple of inches shortly after the recovery. (Perhaps this is purely coincidental however my theory is that because his health was so compromised before, that his growth was possibly being impeded. Who knows!)</p> <p>The worst part of the experience was seeing him in pain shortly after the operation. It nearly broke my heart to see him cry in confusion, bewilderment and pain, so be warned and prepared that you will more than likely feel like the worst mother in the world for putting Georgie through it ;-(. On the upside, my little boy loved the constant jelly, custard and icecream afterwards! For my boy's health, I can tell you it was the best decision healthwise my husband and I could have made. It's interesting you mention bronchial scarring - Georgie has had a lot of pneumonia, and on her last xrays, it did show some very mild scarring.</p> <p>The ENT said her tonsils need to come out - so that's happening next Tuesday now! </p> <p>He said one wasn't too bad, but the other was quite horrid, and seeing as we're doing everything we can for her allergies, he felt it wasn't worth holding out any longer. But I think you are right - I haven't heard of a lot of kids who get their tonsils out unless they needed them - here anyway. I was thinking that since your kiddos were the ones with the severe allergies and are often ill that it might be the reason for them not being vaccinated, which is why I asked. Vaccines are based on building up immunity, so they don't work for everyone, just like everyone that catches the chicken pox isn't necessarily immune! I would say that when whooping cough passed through our school last year vaccines protected about 95-98% of the students that had been vaccinated. Of course, our numbers were a little skewed because many parents who had unvaccinated children or those with weakened lungs or immune systems pulled their children out of school. There was a bit of a scare because we had an unusually high number of cases and childrens' deaths in our state that year. </p> <p>Is it possible that the girls have scarring on their bronchial tubes? My mother and younger brother have a history of chest infections, colds, allergies, and bronchitis which has lead to minor scarring in the lungs. Both of them get a horrible cough that sounds rather like what you are describing. Any cold and infection goes to the chest and then a bad cough remains even after all other signs of sickness have perished. </p> <p>I do hope you all heal up and the ENT appointment goes well. Besides the cough, you wouldn't know they were sick today - perfectly fine, just coughing still. I personally know of people who have still had it despite being vaccinated (one friend scarily had a 4 year old come down with it the week her youngest was born). I believe it can help lesson the severity if you do get it though, and the more who are vaccinated, and whom it protects the better the protection for the others)</p> <p>Karen, it is certainly around in our area in the west. A very good friend's child was diagnosed with whooping cough six weeks ago, even though he *had* been immunised. She was telling me that there is quite a nasty strain doing the rounds at the moment which is sometimes proving resistant to vaccination. (Don't we all just love genetic mutations!) </p> <p>Second case in point: My son came down with chickenpox even though I had him immunised against this illness as per the immunisation guidelines at 18 months (he was 6 when he came down with spots....). The Dr assumed I'd not had him immunised until I produced his immunisation book with the date and batch of vaccine administered. The Doctor then said "Oh, that happens sometimes. The batch must have been faulty." Is there a reason your babies haven't been vaccinated? It is standard here in the U.S. for school, but every year some people get around it. Since you have munchkins you should be vaccinated too, since a childhood vaccine has probably worn off. It is actually really common for adults who are around children to spread it to other unvaccinated adults or to other people's children. Last year at my mother's school a child missed being vaccinated and caught it somehow. Dr thinks I actually just have a sinus infection, but swabbed me to be sure.</p> <p>Today is the first day I've felt like actually sitting up and reading YLF, - til now I've just wanted to sleep. Both girls are tired, cranky and keep coughing.</p> <p>I'm just a little bit over it, and we don't even have the results yet! If we are positive, we'll still be in quarantine until a 5 day course of antibiotics has been completed. I just want to feel happy and healthy again!</p> <p>So thanks in advance for all the thoughts - we sure need them! </p>
