Spays can be so very beneficial to rats, especially females. They are horribly prone to manmary tumors (Blinkin passed away after several manmart tumors and what might have been a uterine tumor that would have been very difficult and risky to surgically remove), and Pituitary tumors (a fatal brain tumor, which is what killed Boo.) surgery is costly; but so is tumor removal or the drugs that can help delay the progress of pituitary tumors. It's a hard decision too to proceed with invasive abdominal surgery on a tiny animal with a short lifespan. We'll have to decide. I think we'll gauge how they do over time.<br /> One thing that would be a big selling point for us to adopt is that they are still quite young-rats have such a short lifespan-and they are getting close to an age where they can be spayed. Spays prevent a lot of the hormonal health concerns that our last 2 rats died from; however surgery from nearby vets costs $400 per animal. Through the rescue, you can adopt and have them spayed for a combined total that's less than 1/4 that cost. They work with a vet who gives a steep discount to rescue organizations. They are suuuuch cuties. They are slowly warming up. It will take patience, time, and making our interactions with them as positive and low stress as possible. They were part of a large group of rescues transported from the Midwest and are used to spending most of their time cuddling with lots and lots of rats, not so much with humans.<br /> Each of them spent a little time on my lap, hiding in a toy or box. We have been ratless since we lost Boo and Blinkin earlier this year, and jumped at the chance. So we have 3 tiny visitors in our home, all little girls approx. 4 months old. </p> <p>They don't have names yet, but we can certainly give them some temporarily; I'm open to ideas. </p> <p>One is fully pewter colored. She seems to be the bravest of the 3, all very shy.</p> <p>One has a white body and pale, dove grey (pearl?) head and back marking. She sways her head a lot (rats do this to help them see; they have terrible vision, some more so than others.)</p> <p>One has a white body and black head/back with scattered white spots. She is a "dumbo", with big, low set ears. I coaxed her a couple inches out of hiding with a Cheerio today. </p> <p>Lucy is quite excited at our new houseguests. The smells! (She was around our last rats and was fine with them, but never unsupervised or unrestrained.)</p> <p>They'll be with us temporarily, but we have the option to adopt if we want to. </p>
