Thank you so much, you have all given me so much to consider.

I have never had shorter than shoulder length hair, with the exception of one disastrous cut in college. Most of my life I have had long hair and that was my trademark for my childhood and all of my twenties. Now that I'm in the mid thirties I've gone to shoulder length for the last few years.

My aim is to be more stylish so I'm taking this all in. We must evolve, right?
Thanks so much for your thoughtful comments! I will keep you posted on what I decide.
Sincerely,
Fathenry

I agree with the consensus about shorter hair. I have fairly fine hair too and never knew how to style it. For years I would just wear it in a pony tail until I finally took the plunge and cut it short (about chin-length bob). Surprisingly, cutting my hair shorter gave it so much more volume and bounce. It also looks a lot more stylish and it's easier to manage. My bob is a lot shorter in back, and my stylist cuts it in such a way that I have automatic volume in the back -- even if I don't blow dry it, the back of my hair looks styled. I love it.

In my opinion, you need a shorter cut with thin hair. Longer hair is best reserved for lasses with thick hair. How do the pro’s Rena and Taylor feel about that?

Yes ,taylor said it - you need a in person consultation, with my many years experience I found when hair is fine its better to go for shorter styles, maybe chin lenght bob with even shorter in the back - that style would be easy to take care of,tuck behind ears and go kind of look.

My hair is fine too, and I have a lot of it, so it tends to be very weighed down and limp without a great cut. My experience is that Taylor's advice is totally correct - my hair is much more manageable and keeps a better shape when it is shorter than my shoulders. I had it below shoulder length for a couple years and was glad to get rid of the length. Currently I'm realizing my hair is getting to be on the long side again because I'm struggling to keep its shape.

I've basically stuck with some variation of a classic or angled bob for the past couple years - my stylist changes it up every time - and kept my length within two inches of chin-length (longer or shorter.) I've had my hair shorter in the past - not a short pixie like Angie's and Rena's, but an inch or so longer all over with a bit more length to play with when I applied product (root volumizer and a tiny bit of shaping wax or pomade.)

Hi Fathenry,

Your hair type does much better when it is off the shoulder..ideally much shorter:0

I don't know how attached you are to your length") Can you see yourself loseing a fair amount ?

My best advise is to find several pics of various cuts, styles and color that you like and bring these to your stylist, only he/she can accurately determine your hair type and needs, and the two of you can decide what would work best for your hair type and how much time, energy , upkeep, and money you want to invest...good luck and let us know what you decide")

Queenie gives some great advice. My hair is fine, but not baby fine, so I'm not sure how to advise you. Do you have a regular stylist you use? If so, I would definitely consult with them, since they will know your hair well, and what would work for it in terms of a cut.

Fathenry- I also am blessed with very fine limp hair. I have found that wearing it chin length or a few inches longer tends to be best for me. Too short, and it sticks to my head, and too long and it is just stringy. My stylist also cuts alot of texture and layers into my hair which seems to give it some personality.
But the second most important factor besides a good cut is styling products. A good mousse or styling gel is a must for me. I work in just a small amount while my hair is still fairly wet (too much and it weighs down my hair) Anyhow, that's more than you asked, but without my hair gel (or whatever it is called) my hair would be a nightmare.
I suggest that you look through magazines and find some cuts that you like and take them to your stylist. If you have a great stylist, she should know how to work with your hair to bring out the best style for your hair type.

Hi Ladies, I understand that hair is an important accessory.

I have never been good at styling my hair. I have shoulder length, straight, baby fine hair. I live in a damp climate so my hair does not hold a style very well.

Can you please reply if you have any suggestions for hairstyles that work for this fine, straight hair texture?

Thank you so much,
Fathenry
