I do my own nails, but have had manicures and pedicures at salons, and I have the regrowth thing that DonnaF mentions. I can't bear what it looks like, so I do my toes every 10 days and my fingers every 5 days or so. My nails grow incredibly quickly though!

I get 1 or 2 pedicures a year, mostly for the effort they put into buffing my feet. When I do go for pedicures, I last about two weeks before I take the polish off myself. I just don't like the way it looks after a while, but it's not because it's chipping. I also like to do my own pedicures, so I usually switch colors in spring, summer and fall about every 2 weeks.

I don't get manicures anymore unless it's for something special. I can't justify $40 for something I'm going to pick off in a meeting 3 days later (yes, I'm one of those people!). I've just purchased a great buffer from Revlon and I've been using that quite frequently - it gives my fingernails a great shine.

Shiny, I just went to a specialty store where they watched me walk and recommended stability shoes. So i got a new pair and they are a full 2 sizes larger than my regular size. I was told it will save my poor little toes.

Fingernails: barely go a week, they chip too easily. So I never bother except for job interviews (haven't had one in over a decade!) or weddings or other special occasions, where I only expect and need it to last for a day or two, tops. Yes I am that hard on my fingernails -- mostly because I type a lot. It's a shame because my fingernails can grow quite long. If only I could do my own manicure! But I have no patience and dexterity for it.

Toenails: I get mine done about 3-4 times a year. Most of that in the summer. I often do go longer than 5 weeks. The growth doesn't bother me... I figure because people see your toes at a distance? And toenails just don't chip all that easily. I do clip and if clipping makes the polish chip or look funny at the tips (which happens with darker polish), then I get a new pedicure.

In winter, I go bare and only get a pedicure if I go somewhere warm on vacation or there's a formal event and I'm baring my toes. Otherwise my toes are covered in warm socks and nobody sees them so I don't bother.

Kathy - do you need wider sneakers?? I run too, but running has never affected my toenail polish. Pedicures have affected the skin on the bottom of my feet though --I've learned it's good to have some callouses.

I usually go about once a month or so in the summer, toes only. Hands may get a clear coat or buffing at most because polish just doesn't last with the frequent hand washing I do. If I get my hands done, I have been doing shellac. That stuff lasts for at least 2-3 weeks, even on me.

I usually get a French pedicure so it lasts a bit longer without the grow out being so noticeable plus I like the look. Right now my toes look horrendous because it's been over a month and I've been running more. Blah.

I am new to polish (toes and fingers); just started after the discussion on YLF about a month or two ago. More than chipping and the like, I find my toenails grow out after about two weeks and my fingernails grow out after about a week -- so both look bad/weird at the base with an unpolished gap even if they are not chipped at the tips.

How do you get around the nail grow-out?

I get a pedicure at least every four weeks, and this is about how long the polish lasts. I think the nail salons use specialty products - something before the actual polish, something as a top coat and the like. When I try to do nails at home, the polish doesn't last nearly as long.

That said, I'm pretty sure I've seen threads posted around here talking about products that do this...something called seche vite or along those lines?

I don't polish my fingernails, so I am not sure how long polish is really supposed to last. I just know that when I try to do my toes myself, I'm not very good at it and the polish doesn't last nearly as long as when I get a pedicure done in-salon.

During the long, dark, cold winter - I don't get as many pedicures, and will take the polish off myself at the four-week mark, and leave my toenails unpolished for awhile. I'll also trim them, buff up the edges, buff the surface of the nail, and that's about it. I don't go to the nail salon for pedicures nearly as often during the fall and winter months.

Four weeks is my limit for leaving polish on toenails, and that's if it was applied at a salon. If I do my toenails myself, I'll likely change up the polish in a week, but that's probably because I don't have all the right 'stuff' that they use in salons.

NPM -- I have never done this (can't bear the thought of anyone touching my feet, and I don't wear polish on my hands) but would like to hear what is typical for others.

Do you find that polish lasts five weeks?

When/if you get your nails painted at a salon, how long do you usually wear the polish before removing it.

Me. I have a pedi every 5 weeks, then have the polished removed next time I go during the pedi.
