Makes me very thankful that I can survive very happily without a car! Although rising fuel prices are passed on at some stage to even us non-car owners through food prices, delivery charges and public transport rates.

In Chicago, about $3.49.

I am wincing at the prices in Europe! But maybe it's good. Maybe it will force us to be less dependent on our cars.

I don't know, I reserve the right to bellyache! Where I live I absolutely have to have 4 wheel drive (and not all wheel drive)-- we have a few people in the area that drive small cars, but most usually have a second car for bad weather or just stay home from work. There are very few 4 wheel drive vehicles that are not SUVs or Trucks. We also have the largest number of large animal collisions in the entire state along the stretch of road I drive to school (deer, elk). When you hit those type of animals in a small car or something low like a crossover, or even a mini van the animals roll right up your hood and come through the windshield.

Right now I drive a large Chevy truck. It is almost as fuel efficient as the small SUV I was driving before, and a heck of alot safer. But darn it, it smarts to fill up the tank from 1/4 and paying 70-something dollars! I don't feel I really have a choice either, because public transportation around here sucks if it isn't completely non-existent and I can't afford to live closer to school or work.

You beat me to it Louise,
assuming the converter is correct there are 3.78 litres to the US gallon which means we pay £5.03 ($8.10) per US gallon oouuuch!

ETA we must have used different calculators Louise, but you get the idea UK fuel prices are not fab.

I had to get gas the other day, and I kept passing gas stations thinking 'There HAS to be a better price!'. I finally ended up with the lowest price that I found, but it still seemed incredibly high- until my husband told me that he paid over $4/gallon on his way home (remote area with no competition).
What's the going rate for gas where you live, and where are you?

I paid $3.61/gallon in the California desert (halfway between LA and Vegas)
That was the cheapest price that I saw by far.
