Thanks, Marianna - I have a friend who makes it from regular milk, but it always looked daunting to me. If it's really not that complicated, I'll try to add it to my repertoire!

Lena and Marianne -- I love syrniki too. We make them with homemade cottage cheese (made from buttermilk). Delicious.

Marianne, homemade farmers/cottage cheese is really easy actually. My mom literally just boils a couple cartons of Bulgarian buttermilk (she just sticks the opened cartons in a pot) and then after a certain amount of time, she drains them and tada -- cheese! Very yummy for breakfast too.

Favorite breakfasts (yes plural) not neccisarily in this order:
An everything bagel with cream cheese, onion, capers, and home grown tomatoes (no Marianna, it's not a Russian thing, although I loved the food I ate while on a trip to Russia)
Eggs over easy, hashbrowns. rye toast and bacom
What my children fondly refer to as Grandpa toast. My father's invention. White toast , lots of butter, lots of brown sugar, topped off with cinnamon.
What I eat most days: Old-fashioned oatmeal with 1% milk, flax seed, a banana and walnuts.
Favorite time to eat breakfast: at night.

Lena, I used to love those "syrniki" too. I haven't made them in US though - I am too lazy to make my own cheese, and I don't know what would be a good substitute - ricotta? cottage cheese? I would like to master that - I bet my kids would love it.
My typical breakfast is either toast or whole oats (even better than steel cut). And tea, of course! I can't have a large breakfast, unless it's later in the day, like brunch.
Bella, I love that picture! What kind of tea is it?

I can't skip breakfast - just can't start the day without it. I like either savory or sweet, with savory winning out. I also definitely need a bit of protein in my breakfast - otherwise I lose energy fast. I'm adventurous with breakfasts because I'm absolutely ravenous in the morning.

Marianna, I used to eat melted cheese on toast as a child (sorry Angie). My grandmother used to make it in a pan before we didn't have a toaster oven. I also loved farmer's cheese pastries - I really don't know how to describe them, they are sometimes called "syrniki". And apple or zucchini pancakes were a special treat, too.

I'm in love with slow cooking oatmeal (i.e. steel cut), usually savory. I've been eating it almost non stop for a year (before that I stuck with yogurt and cereal and fruit/berries). In fact, I think I can eat oatmeal at all times during the day, it's such a comfort food for me. Interestingly, I used to dislike it as a child.

Everyone's ideas sound so yummy!

P.S. and lots and lots of tea!

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day! I love sampling different breakfast traditions around the country and the world.

I love it both sweet and savory, but given a choice I usually choose savory. My family has always, ever since I was a child, had eggs for breakfast over the weekend. To me, eggs mean the weekend is here. As a vegetarian, eggs are a pretty significant part of my diet. I love them in all forms, but my absolute favorite is baked in little ramekins with scallions and tons of black papper, with warm buttered toast for dipping.

After eggs, waffles are probably my most frequently consumed breakfast. Heck, I eat them for lunch and dinner sometimes too. Waffles and tea is a timeless favorite.

When I was in Sweden, we began the day with fresh bread, cheese, and a big beautiful cup of tea. I wish I could remember what tea it was Loved that. Simple and perfect.

In France, I'd come running down the stairs when I heard my host mom making galettes--always with Nutella and creme fraiche.

Popovers and hot cocoa are a winner in winter. I had this first on vacation in Maine when I was little.

Now I'm hungry

Hmmm . .. this sounds good. I like homeade blueberry smoothies with raisin toast, old fashioned oatmeal with raisins, hard boiled eggs, cinnamon rolls, ect. but I think my all time favorite is blue cornmeal mush either cold or hot. Cook it over a double boiler with some ash and let it cool you get something similar to fried polenta without the grease-- mmm, just tastes like morning. Oh, and I love fruit and orange juice with breakfast.

I am perfectly happy eating one of 2 breakfasts any day of my life
1) Weetbix with milk and ideally yoghurt and ideally, honey or otherwise sugar
2) Porridge made with rolled oats soaked overnight and cooked with some skim milk powder (not quick oats or, worse, instant oats. I haven't seen steel cut in Aus and am not sure what they are) with sugar (dark sugar is my favourite) and milk

Marley, I'm laughing my head off at your 'handful of animals' !!!!!

Our favorite breakfast at home is Swiss Oats (I'm not sure how Swiss it is): Oats soaked in milk, tsp of brown sugar, handful of sultanas, a grated apple and a sliced banana - better if it gets a chance to soak for 1/2 hr of so - YUM, YUM.

If we go out I am most likely to order something like french toast with bacon and maple syrup.

Oh girls you are making my mouth water!!

I simply cannot function until I've had my breakfast - I literally pass out if I don't eat! (I do have low blood sugar and low blood pressure though and diet is the key to management).

So, for me, the instant I get out of bed I head to the kitchen for Tea and Toast (multigrain, dairy & gluten free). Then about an hour later I have morning tea - and then I seem to snack hourly...

But, if I am ever out for breakfast (I still eat a snack at home before I go!), I always go for savoury - eggs, bacon, toast, hollandaise sauce...

If I had a live in chef, I would have this sort of breakfast waiting for me on the table for when I get up every single day LOL

I had a savory breakfast every morning when I worked outside all day, but now with retirement I indulge in all sorts of sweet cereals, or Dave's toast with butter and jelly.
On the weekends my dear Arnie makes us great french toast using Dave's nutty bread, with syrup, or pancakes with syrup. Yum!

I am one of those people who eats the same thing every day: One English muffin (a particular brand that toasts up nice and crunchy) with butter, 2-3 graham crackers (not the kind with honey, but the old-fashioned kind), a handful of almonds, and a cup of coffee made with my French press. Large breakfasts are nauseating to me, especially eggs. I can't handle eggs in the morning--blech. Might have something to do with my stint in college working at Denny's on the 6 am-2 pm shift.

Marianna I love cheese on toast - but usually for when I cant be bothered cooking dinner! My "indulgent" brekky when I'm feeling naughty is thick french toast with berries & maple syrup (and ice cream if I'm hung over). I dont eat this often though because I'm on a low carb diet and it's not exactly low carb so it's usually bacon & egg on toast or english muffin.

Perhaps boring was the wrong word? I guess unvaried is more like it. I'm like Inge and go for months eating cereal then months with toast. The only variation is weekends and then it's usually a cooked breakfast of some sort. There are so many yummy ideas here it's making me want to try a different breakfast every morning x

It's hard for me to say as I love a good short stack with real maple syrup and a side of links. But I think that my most fav is an egg over easy, hash browns and links served with good old fashioned drip coffee with cream and sugar; I'm dark and bitter enough!

Breakfast food in general is awesome, however. Melon and prosciutto, breakfast breads, doughnuts from Top Pot, a nice Ruby Red grapefruit half with coffee... Mmm. Savory or sweet, I love it!

Edit: maybe I love it because I rarely get to eat breakfast! Boo! I'm not a morning person and never have time...
