Fruitful, thank you for the mention (blushes)

i was reading somewhere recently that in France they call it 'le no makeup'. Love it!

For very pale complexions i like a grey shade of powder - MAC shadow in Omega is great. Mostly i like to use a short, stiff, clean edged brush and shadow. i also like using just regular hair gel on a spoolie or toothbrush to keep the shape. elf makes a clear mascara/blow gel for $1, after it's gone you can clean it out and put in your hair gel. that makes it easy to use.

i used to use brow pencil and have been thinking about getting one again....if you have a good shape of brow, here's a fun way to do pencil. just hold the pencil parallel to your face and brush the color back and forth over the eyebrow hairs - you want to actually color the hairs, not the skin. Brush into place and you're good to go. I find this is the most undetectable method, but don't pick too dark of a shade. And it doesn't help with filling in bald spots.

Really fun thread! Best of luck anne, steph

I must use something too because my brows are so blond they disappear. But I find it very difficult to get the perfect shape and level of colour every time I make up. When you are as pale as me, brows can make or brake your face.

A few years ago I tried having them done professionally and since, I have been hooked. Waxed and died. I can't go back to relying on makeup only. The look is completely different, so much cleaner, more natural and yet darker. Yes, it does cost me more money but I have it done every 6 weeks and use my pencil in between to fill it. It is important to find someone who does them well, who has a sense of structure. Ask around, ask your hairdresser.

Sometimes I only have them waxed. However I am not a fan anymore of the pencil or powder as it looks to me now too much like makeup no matter what. Makeup on the brows has a powdery, shadow-like quality I don't like. It's too easy to put too much on. Dying them avoids the shadow issue.

Great thread - thank you! I always use a pencil or brow mascara because otherwise I look brow-less and it REALLY makes a difference to me. Like Khris, I'll wear it even if I'm going without any other makeup. It's THE essential. I'm going to try the MAC Fling; thanks!

Christieanne, thanks for the brow-blending techniques. I've been using a pencil (blonde), but did use MAC powder before with a slanted brush, but for some reason went back to a pencil. I think it was that the powder didn't seem to have enough definition for my sparse brows. I'm glad Denise gave the link to the MAC pencil as I'll sample the "Fling" next time. Great thread here.

I try to keep up but control myself. There are so many makeup blogs out there - I had to stop reading them and now I just have a few trusted sites for info. Seems like so many bloggers are getting tons of free things and always make it sound good.

I worked Clinique for about a year before I moved into fine china and bridal registry and the home areas. I actually liked that better - less pressure even though the bridezillas/momzillas were hard to take.

Mostly stick to a few brands these days (and luckily have two good friends at Chanel and Nars otherwise I would have no money for clothes - they get a lot of comps and I take their rejects and recommendations.) I do love hunting up new and cheaper things at the drugstore too. But I truly don't need another taupe eyeshadow (kind of accumulate like black shoes).

I would love to find out what routines people have. So many of my friends use so little and are overwhelmed when I want to shop or talk makeup.

Sorry Anne that we have taken your thread in a different direction - back to brows!

Do we have a thread about makeup tips, techniques, styles (trends)? I guess I could search the site. It would be fun to know what people consider their "must" items and the best brands for those items. I have always kept mine really simple.. liquid brow liner, eyeliner, sometimes mascara tinted moisturizing sunscreen, and lipstick with sunscreen. Oh.. and I have found a power sunscreen I like really well by ColorScience.

Christieanne, wow! You are so lucky to have met VL!

You must have so much knowledge about the many lines and products that are out there! I came to makeup slowly, in my mid-twenties, largely because of adult acne :(, but I find it fascinating and think of it as accessible luxury. I've learned a lot from MakeupAlley, blogs and Youtube. MrsEccentric who posts here is also into makeup and we're both alike in that you wouldn't know it - I usually seem to just manage a carefully contrived "natural" look lol! *waves to makeup lover*

I don't feel done unless I've done my eyebrows. Even if I am going without most make up, I do the eyebrows. I go back and forth between a pencil and a powder every so often. The drug store brands just keep getting better and better- it's an item you don't need to spend a lot on to make a big difference.

I absolutely MUST "do my eyebrows" or I look like I have none! They are still dark but getting very sparse. Depending on the day, I use bobbi brown slate shadow with a stiff little brush, or sometimes a Laura Geller brow corrector in brown (liquid, looks like a fine felt tip marker). I do that even if I wear no other makeup.

Poor Vincent Longo! I actually met him in a store in NYC a few years back. Yes, I could have died on the spot. Not only is he gorgeous, but friendly and talented. He suggested a lipstick for me and I have clung to that ever since :)
We do have VL in a very limited way - at the CVS beauty stores they carry the line again. I think at QVC or HSN or one fo those tv shopping places (I avoid those).
He needs a new business manager or something - the products are great.

Shu pulled out of the US last year - we can get their eyelash curlers at Sephora but that's it.

Good to find a fellow makeup lover - I started my retail life in cosmetics (Clinique of course) and have been enchanted ever since.

Christieanne, those are great tips! No Shu Uemura at all? very sad. If you want something custom purchased here, just ask! I'm forever gutted that we don't get Vincent Longo here anymore (I found that out after I threw away my empty Water Canvas compact, with my shade info on it, which I can't remember!) And Vincent Longo grew up in Australia, so how wrong is that?

I have really dark brows myself (darker slightly than my colored hair) but I have a slight gap in one and the ends are too thin (from over tweezing in teen years - we used to do that!) so been filling mine in for years.

One other trick to make them look more natural with a pencil.
Use teeny pencil strokes to dash lines on. The take a clean "spoolie" (you know, a mascara brush but they sell them new or you can use a cleaned brush form a mascara tube but no mascara) and go through brow in reverse three times. That sort of diffuses the lines and blends everything. You can also soften with a cotton bud/q tip.

My sister is blondish and she finds using a colored brow gel is easier to darken ever so slightly all over brow. Then she softens a bit with qtip.

MAC does make a nice thin pencil - I forgot about that one. Been through most of the brands I think after all these years (and sad we can't get Shu Uemura any more in US).

Anne, filling in/accentuating my brows is my favourite part of making up. I think if there's only one makeup you put on your face, it should be a brow product. Eyebrows frame features and make a huge difference to the face. I'd even go so far as to say filling in brows is more important than shaping them by plucking; sometimes what appears to need correction by plucking, can be corrected by filling in.

You can get a pencil, a gel, or use a brush and powder (you can use brow powder, or a decent quality eyeshadow in a suitable colour). There's even waxes and pomades.

I used to prefer using a push brush (stiff small flat brush) in some dark shadow. I finally last year got the Shu Uemura Hard 9 brow pencil (they also have another one which is more conventional) and haven't looked back. The only thing is it has to be shaped into a special sort of blade shape (they do this for you, or if you're handy with a stanley knife you can do it). In this shape you can do fine hairlike strokes. In fact, mine's a bit blunt and thick but I still think it looks pretty good on.

It isn't soft, it's totally hard, and can't draw without the oils on your skin. So it only works with the natural oils in your brows. Hence you get the most natural, fine look possible.

I think it cost $27 which is not bad for a medium-high end cosmetic line (also, unlike a lot of brands, they don't put on an exorbitant markup for Australia). It will last a LONG time, every review I've read says they last forever.

I got mine at Shu Uemura David Jones. They sharpened it, showed me how to use it and were good, not scary or pushy.

Of course, there are many good brow products and techniques - just wanted to put in a little rave for my fave!

I'm a lifelong pencil user, my brows are white and sparse. I like Maybelline's click pencil type, it's a copy of what Mac and others came out with years ago.

It's a handy thing if you have sparse brows or a gap in the brow to fill them out. If you think you need one, I'd look for a good color match (go a shade lighter, not darker) and a very tiny point to the pencil. Maybelline makes a decent one at drugstore and Anastasia at higher price point at Sephora/Ulta. If you in the states.

You can also just do a light gel to keep brows under control, there are powders and colored mascaras and waxes too.

On you tube there are tons of makeup how to videos if you want application tips.
Hope that helps some.
