Hee hee, glad there are some other slackers out there, even though I am really amazed and admiring of all you fit ladies out there.
Katja, thanks for the encouragement! I hope to find another day to go during the week, but I work long hours and need my beauty rest If we are grasping at straws I like to ride my bike when possible or go for walks.

I do four workouts a week, but I do them on only two days because my schedule is so heinous! Mondays: Work out with the trainer at the gym from 6 to 7, then take tap class from 9 to 10. Thursdays: Tap class from 6 to 7, then trainer from 8 to 9. I try to get a power walk or two in on the weekends, but don't always make it.

Hopefully next semester I'll be able to spread things out a bit.

My exercise routine goes like this:

1. Think thoughts about how working out is good for you
2. Peruse gym class schedule on internet while snuggled up on sofa
3. Feel ashamed of slug-like nature

Scarlet I'm with you. Except I don't even do weights once a week. Just watch what I eat (mostly-ish), moderation and whatnot. Walk whenever the opportunity arises (stairs, etc.). Mm I think that's it I should probably do more. Used to do yoga daily, that was pretty helpful. Perhaps I'll get back into that this winter. I'm impressed with all the hardcore routines all you gals do!

5 mornings a week when I get out of bed I do about 20 minutes of weights, upper body one day, lower the next.

4 times a week I run. (3 evenings and one long run on Sunday morning. I'm working up to a 10k run on the weekends.)

2 times a week (on the nights that I don't run) I go to a Spinning class at the gym. It's 40 minutes of great cardio and exercises different muscles than the running does.

Lately I've been trying to add in Yoga a couple of days a week. (I do it during the kids naptime). I need more flexibility and this seems to be the best way for me now.

That's me. I've been in this routine for about a year now. I will occasionally skip a day, but it's rare. I will, however, not feel guilty when I go on vacation and don't get in the same amount of workouts. I just jump back in my routine when I get home and am thankful for any workouts that I can get in when I'm away! LOL

I do CrossFit five days a week.

Also, my New Year's Resolution this year was to become a better long distance runner. =) I have run in 6 5K races, 2 10K races and 1 10 miler race so far this year. I have one more 5K and a 5 miler on my agenda before the year's end. Next goal: half marathon (but I LOATHE cold weather, so training is going to be bitter).

On a fashion note: I feel it is more encouraging to have new gear to inspire workout sessions. ;)

I work out five days a week, and take the weekends off. Two days a week I do a half hour of cardio and a half hour of weights and core. This consists of a three minute walking warm-up, followed by five minutes of jogging, then ten minutes on a stair-climbing machine, then ten minutes on a cross-country machine. I follow that with core exercises (crunches, using the Roman chair), and various arm exercises with weights.

The other three days I spend an hour doing cardio. One day I'll do an hour on the elliptical, one day I will run for an hour (five miles--I'm not very fast), and one day I will walk on the treadmill, alternating between an incline of 9% and 21%. Sometimes I will replace one of the cardio days with a shorter, half hour workout of sprinting intervals.

I'm really jealous of the people who can maintain their weight by just walking around town. I hurt my knee and shoulder this summer and took three months off at the gym, but still walked a bunch and maintained my diet, and I put on about ten pounds, which I am now struggling to lose.

When I don't travel, I work out about 6 days a week. I do cardio at least 5 days a week for 30 mins. I do my weights/resistance training for about 50 mins and stretching for about 30 mins. I workout with a personal trainer once a week. Sometimes I am able to join a full body workout class once a week. When I do travel (which is frequently) it all goes out the window and I have to start from scratch and build up slowly again. Oh, and I got a groupon for a boot camp for 30 days. I think I'll try it when the weather is more wintery.

Cool, Mo! My hubbie has a room full of free weights and equipment. He's been lifting since he was 18! My idea of a fun workout is watching "Cook Yourself Thin" while sweating on my elliptical - although any cooking show is good! And I do love to cook.

Yep, a pedometer is a great idea; I wear one too. I'll bet you DO put some mileage on yours!

The best workout motivation for me, besides the obvious health benefits, is rocking my skinny jeans!

I was way better about exercising before the summer, then it got too hot and I stopped being able to run without feeling ill.

For now, at least 5 days a week I walk 2 miles (about 18 minutes in the morning and 18 minutes in the evening) to and from school, and 3 days a week I do stretches and strength training (loosely based on the XBX, but with a much more varied and intense sit-up routine). It would be great to get back into running, but right now it’s not a priority.

Oh, hey, no slight intended Barbara! I lift, too! I just like their slogan that there is so much variety out there it needn't be trudgery. I got tons of steps on my pedometer when running around a restaurant for a full 8 hours as well. There are just so many ways to be active. And I like when it feels more like play Most of all, kudos to having a routine you like that you can stick with for the long term - that's the hardest for most of us.

Hey Mo, I've ALWAYS been an active hiker and outdoorsy girl. Living in Europe for 12 years provided me with numerous opportunities to hike the Alps and participate in Volksmarching (walking on pre-determined paths for various distances) with my German friends. I put in thousands of kilometers!

As far as those reps go, they are necessary in weight training if you want results!

I also swim, bike, dance and skate, but that's more like playing than working out!

Ooh Tricia, I have been wanting to do Couch to 5k for ages. Though I am more of a swimmer than runner.

This thread is very well timed, I was just on the phone with a friend to organise our first gym dates for the next few weeks! Gotta get back into it. The gym has a pool too so I get to swim. Swimming is great cause it's like meditation and cardio all at the same time for me. My ultimate goal is to swim the "Escape from Alcatraz" swim - but I have to invest in a wetsuit to train for that one!

Other than my impending gym dates, I make an effort to incorporate exercise into my daily routine. I don't have a car, so I haul all my groceries home in a little cart, I take the stairs, I walk to work (30 minutes either way), I whisk cakes by hand. It all adds up.

Barbara, good for you for sticking with it!! I have done many different exercises at different intensities over the last 20 years since I first stepped into my apartment bldg's gym at 22. I have had the times where I go to the gym faithfully and then the times where just my job keeps me on my toes and the gym falls by the wayside. At 37 I started the couch to 5K program as well, Tricia. I ran my first 5K (and so far only) 3 years ago. I did a sprint triathlon the following summer.
I've been in modes where I do a lot of yoga. I've had summers where we mountain bike all over the place. Last year I started knocking around the tennis ball with the BF. Some winters it's all about the snowboarding. And some years not. I like to change it up more than anything. I like the motto of Crossfit's plan - life is about more than 3 sets of 10 reps.
I think as long as we are moving our bodies - it's good!!

My routine is simple and effective. DAILY: 20 minutes on my elliptical - it's the equivalent of walking about 2.5 miles at 4 miles per hour; plus it's low impact. I do 100 pilates-style crunches and a few yoga poses to strengthen my core. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I do a 20-minute upper body weight session with 5-pound chrome dumbbells. Five different moves - curls, lat raises, shrugs, triceps extensions and waist twists. 15 reps three times. I walk every chance I get, and eat sensibly - South Beach Diet Style - high quality protein, only complex carbs: whole grains, fruit and veggies. I've been doing this for 20+ years. The key to sticking to a workout plan: KEEP IT SIMPLE AND FUN.

I started running too! In September I started the Couch to 5K plan for beginning runners, and I'm almost done with week 7 (it's a 9-week program). Right now it has me running 25 minutes, 3 days a week, and I signed up for a 5K in early December.

I'm doing Weight Watchers as well so I don't know which is having a bigger effect, but the weight is absolutely falling off, and I think the running must have at least something to do with it. I never thought I'd like running, but feeling myself get better at it has been kind of a rush!

I'm trying to convince myself to train for a half marathon so I'm running 3 times per week, with cross training on the indoor bike or in the pool doing laps. I am supposed to lift one day and yoga one day as well. I haven't stuck to the letter with this, but I'm doing pretty well. Not fully committed to the race in Feb. yet. Once my vacation ends next week, I'll have 13 weeks til race day to train. I think I'll know by about Christmas if I'm really up for it or not

I was running for a time this year but now just try to fit a walk in. I might go back to running a few times a week. It doesn't seem to make much difference to my weight though..the walking is enough to keep it down. But I lead an active life anyway.

For many years my exercise was walking or biking to town (for work, dinner, etc...), which is about one mile, walks in the park with my husband after work, and dance class two times a week (ballroom one day and ballet the other). Then, in October 2008, I started a new job that required me to commute half-time and travel frequently. I also (for some unknown reason) agreed to be on several boards and committees. All of this meant that, on most days, I was not walk/bike commuting into town for work, I was getting home too late to go for walks with hubby (most days I wake and get ready for work around 5 or 5:30 and get home 7:30 and often later if I have a meeting), and I had to drop out of my dance classes. It has been a tough year. I've gained about 15 pounds. Plus, the lack of movement has depressed me a bit. Now, that I'm getting more control of my life (trying to limit my commuting days, saying "no" to requests for board/committee commitments and leaving when my term ends), I'm trying to integrate movement back in. I've started dancing again in February. Once it warms up above the teens, I'm going to try to walk again in the evening. I'm trying to be more committed to walking/biking to work and to town for dinner or shows.

All of this was really effective for me in controlling and not worrying about my weight. I'm not an exerciser, but I love movement. I love being outside and listening and watching the birds. I love to dance. I am also a foodie (locavore/Michael Pollan-style), so the combination of loving to eat (albeit good, seasonal food) and not moving really caught up.

Little-by-little, I hope to drop some of this weight...

I spin or run about 45 minutes at least 4 times a week and do ab work afterwards. I just hired a personal trainer for the next five weeks (10 half hour sessions, two a week) to help me with strength training because I have no upper body strength and also lack any sort of kinetic intelligence (in grade school, I ran track and cross country because it only really involved putting one foot in front of the other as fast as you could, haha).

I worked out with a trainer for about 3 months. My trainer, who was very well qualified and had several degrees, mentioned that recent studies have show that that most effective workout is to do really hard cardio for at least 20 mins every day. That means getting your heart rate up to about 85% of max, and of course going longer is better, but going every day is really the key. And, to that, she recommended weight training 3 days a week. I do cardio for 30~45 mins 5 days a week, and 3 days a week I alternate between upper body and lower body weight training. I just do compound muscle exercise to save on time and get the most out of my training. This includes squats, push-ups (have to put my knees down still, but I'm working on it!!), assisted pull-ups, crunches of various sorts. Lunges are good, too!

Once you get in the routine you'll find yourself looking forward to it. It's makes you feel really great!

I am still not cleared to exercise again, technically. Though I did walk for an hour at 2.0 mph once this week.

When I finish physical therapy and am able to return to regular workouts I am hoping to mix jogging/walking 3 days a week, and other cardio (elliptical, bike or erg) 2 days a week.

I think the key to a good exercise routine is variety. Unless you are training for an event I don't think it's best to run (or bike, or swim, etc) every single day. I think you need to mix up the cardio methods to stabe off boredom and keep your body guessing.

I think yoga is awesome for your body and will do you well mixed with some other things. Maybe other types of yoga or pilates, and some group exercises classes.
