My son Skyped again, having difficulty getting to sleep. He walked home from work and said the biggest problem he saw was the long lines at busses and taxi stands as people try to get home. He didn't see much damage. As we talked, the aftershocks kept coming every couple of minutes..some he said felt different in direction than others. Out his window he said some trains were beginning to run and life was looking fairly normal with couples drinking Belgain beer at the Irish pub, shopkeepers working, restaurants open.

Very scary stuff indeed... Its a testament to amazing Japanese construction standards and urban planning that so few lives were lost in the actual earthquake; but the tsunami casualties are sobering. And the human suffering in the aftermath is very daunting to consider. (I grew up in a little old beach Victorian technically just a little below sea level, so I understand the power of the sea.) My heart goes out to all touched by this overwhelming event.

Japan... New Zealand... Remember my west coast neighbors: we cling to one rim of that beautiful, shifting blue bowl of the Pacific. If you don't already keep water and canned or dried foods at your home, today would make a very good day to lay in some! Your pal, L.

We heard at 1am our time. Joy, I'm so glad that your son is okay. We have a very good friend whose fiance lives in Tokoyo and she and her family are okay too. Just emailed my good friend Eva about her family in Hawaii. Haven't heard back yet. Rae, I'm glad that your Hawaiian family is alright.

This was the a level 8.9 earthquake that hit Japan and the Tsunamis are traveling as fast as a jumbo jet. Devastating and horrific for the people and animals of Japan. My thoughts and prayers are with them all.

Joy, that is so scary! I'm glad your son is alright - I hope that poor window washer made it! We keep the CNBC on all day for work, so it's impossible not to see all the tragic images... I just can't imagine...

My son lives in Tokyo. We were able to find out that he is alright, as is his apartment. Scary. His earthquake magnitude ap on his i-phone can't keep up with all the aftershocks. He watched a window washer outside a tall building next to his hang on for dear life.

I don't know if we have any forum members in Japan, where that terrible earthquake hit... but if we do, I hope you are safe and well!

I have a lot of family in Hawaii, and it seems like they are okay for now, but the news says they've been ordered away from the coast -- and the tsunami warning has been extended to the West Coast... that means California! Good thoughts to everyone affected -- please be safe!
