I waited to get my Kindle until the libraries offered books for free, because I read so much. I don't mind having to wait in line for a book. I also get a lot of audio books from the library to listen to in the car, while I walk the dogs, or while knitting. That said, I love the ease and speed of buying books with my Kindle. They are cheaper than paper books, and I love having the sample feature. I love the secure feeling of having my Kindle loaded with books. When traveling I was always afraid I'd run out of things to read. Next month I'm expecting an ipad and will use the Kindle app on it. I'm excited to try magazines. I probably spend $10 a month, usually for a book I need for book club.

I read constantly and have a nook which I mainly use for travel. I have not been able to figure out how to use it at the library and there is no one that will help which is very frustrating. I get t books from the library in the summer.
Anyone have luck with the Nook and the library? I have spent this year, maybe 100.00 on books for my nook.

I've got a Kindle (the grayscale kind), which I was given for a gift. When I got it I declared that I would budget $25 a quarter for ebooks and I've stuck to that (I buy myself an Amazon gift card at the grocery store or whatever and redeem it, and then just use my gift balance for any books I want to buy). As it turns out I haven't had a hard time keeping to that, since my library does have ebook lending now (I do like others and get myself on the hold queue - I'm used to that with popular print books as well) and I do a lot of reading of long articles and things I find on the web on my Kindle as well.

Speaking of which, if you have a Kindle and you don't know about Instapaper, check it out - you bookmark things on your web browser and then it sends a digest of them to your Kindle. It also works on most smartphones. Really handy.

Also, a good blog for keeping up with temporarily free and discounted ebooks (that are worth reading) is this one - Books on the Knob.

To answer your question Victoria - I can't say that I have anything all that special to recommend, because for some reason I keep buying kind of boring (but still fascinating to me) books - things that aren't all that fun to read. I guess the only book I've read recently on my Kindle that I would actually recommend is "Innovator's DNA" - kind of geeky and not all that relaxing, but still an extremely intriguing book about innovative ideas.

To be perfectly honest, I could use some decent fiction recommendations myself! I keep reading all these economics blogs, newspapers, Economist magazine and somewhat dry books about business, politics and the economy. It's not all that relaxing.

The last fiction book I read was "The Help" in paperback (was a gift in my Christmas stocking) and I enjoyed it so much that I read it in about two days.

Meanwhile, my night table has the latest paper copies of The Economist magazine...I have the New York Times on my Kindle and ...next on my list is: "Breakout Nations: In Pursuit of the Next Economic Miracles" by Ruchir Sharma.

For a bit of a twist...

If you're at all interested in the environment and in particular, the Pacific Northwest rainforest, there's an incredibly beautiful book you might want to read - it's called "Chasing Clayoquot: A Wilderness Almanac" - several years old now (2004), but if you ever wanted to feel the rain, the wind and the earth in one of the most beautiful places in the world - then this is the book.

http://www.amazon.com/Chasing-.....ver+island

But yeah, as you can see - I could certainly use some lightening up on the reading front. I love reading novels, but I keep reading this other stuff!

I hardly spend anything. Between checking out e-books at the library/Amazon plus Amazon's free books I have little occasion to spend much. This is me practicing some self-discipline as I adore reading and would spent tons of $$ if I could, especially with how convenient electronic books are. I love my Kindle.

Edited to say I just ordered Nine-tenth. I lurve me some time travel and you can't beat that price. I've got another time travel waiting on my Kindle about Eqypt and the time of the pyramids.

One thing I forgot to mention was how much I love the sample feature. I've rejected many books thanks to this but also purchased many too.

WOW, 150 books a year ? That is just amazing !! I cannot read and absorb any where near that rate. I also read non-fiction, so I like to really think about certain theories or facts in the books ( LOL ! Yeah, that is why I am a slow reader ! )

I have the first generation, Beta Kindle. That thing still works like a charm. I also download free podcasts on mine. I LOVE it. I thought I would hate it. But I can't ever see myself not having one.

I probably spend $100 a year on ebooks. I still read some books too. I have ordered my last three reads as books. And I have another 3 digital ones awaiting me. I really have to control myself. I will hear an author on NPR and want to down load immediately.

Victoria, with regard to the library books, I get "in line" for the books I want (usually I will come across an interesting book title/review online or in the paper and will immediately go to the library website and put the book on hold). I get an e-mail from the library when it is my turn to borrow the book (it often comes sooner than I expect since there are no renewals on digital books). This way I always have some books waiting for me to read, even though I may have to wait for a particular title.

As far as real books vs. e-books, I actually have always disliked buying paper books (unless they are for reference) because I felt that unless it's a book I will keep re-reading, I am creating clutter by purchasing paper copies of books I might only read once. I have always preferred to borrow books from the library but then there is the hassle involved in going there. That's why I love the Kindle. On the other hand, DH still buys plenty of paper books so we are in no danger of complete decluttering.

I have an e-reader, but I've gotten most of my books from the Gutenberg project (www.gutenberg.org), which has lots of classics for free. I've also gotten tons from Google books for free...I've told myself I can't buy any e-books until I've finished The Princess and the Curdie by George MacDonald, free from Gutenberg, and the Harry Potter books I have in print, so I haven't spend any money yet.

I constantly have to keep myself in check, I just cannot resist paper books (and magazines) and would empty out the stores if I had an unlimited budget (and room to spare). The amount I spend really varies, but one thing's for sure, as soon as I finally get an e-reader (I feel so behind now, after reading about all your toys:-), it will become even more tempting and easier to indulge my reading and book buying habit.
(I do have an iPhone but find the screen too small to read comfortably.)

I have a Kindle app on my Samsung Galaxy tab and I currently spend about 30 euro on books per month. I am definitely trying to cut down a bit because that is a little more than we should be spending on books! I like paper books better, but English books are SO expensive in France. The affordable ebooks and the fact that I don't have to hunt for books makes me a big fan of my Kindle app!

I recently purchased a Kindle Fire and I use the Kindle app for my android phone, plus the cloud reader for my pc. I do get a lot of books through the public library and I also use other reading apps on the Fire and the phone (like Aldiko) that support epub formats so that I have more options for obtaining content!

Velvety chocolate: I am totally addicted, oh yes! Although I have to say that getting books on Kindle is cheaper for me than buying all these books before(not to mention that I don't have much space in my apt so Kindle has been lifesaver!

You read anything good lately? Any recommendations?

I download free stuff a lot but its fairly rare that I find one that I actually like. I don't know, maybe its just me but I find that even if a book has stellar rating on Amazon, chances are I probably won't like it.
I did just read this book, "Nine-tenth" by Meira Pentermann and I have been recommending it to all my friends. Its a truly awesome book, sci-fi about the time travel. So far all my friends loved it as well

I just inherited an older Kindle, but I love it! I thought I would miss the smell of paper and all, but I really love the reader. It's so light, and I can turn pages with just one hand, so I end up able to read in a much more relaxed position. :)

I was a late starter to electronic books, I had my iPhone last May but prefered a real book in my hands until 2 days before Christmas last year when I had run out of books and refused to go shopping so close to Christmas so I downloaded a book on iBooks and I've not looked back. I perhaps get through a book a week though I did spend last Saturday in bed and got through a whole book!! I've always been a avid reader devouring loads of books but I find I read even more now as I always have my phone with me so can pick up my 'book' whenever I've got a spare 5 mins. I load up on both my phone and iPad. The bookmarks sync between the two x
Eta I just found out the other day that our local library has free books available online so I need to pop along an get a library card then I can get them x

I've got two nooks and nook on iPhone. My mom has one of the two nooks now. I'm guessing I spend $20-30 on e-books and e-magazines. Although that seems a bit high to me, I chain read like people used to chain smoke.

I'm getting ever nearer to getting an iPad. Love the nook, but it IS just a wee bit small for reading magazines.

I share my SO's Kindle Touch that's only about two months old. We've not spent on books yet, I think --- we had a whole bunch of free ebooks piled up on our computers and it's easy to find more on the web if your tastes DO run to older literature, folk tales and fairy tales, and the like; but I do foresee buying in the future (especially as we've been contemplating an iPad or another smaller tablet from Samsung at some point this year), how much depending on the budget at that point. (Right now, the budget only stretches to our library subscription, which is where we get the current paperbacks.)

I was going to buy a Kindle (regular e-ink) this past Christmas as a present to myself, but my dad clearly wanted an excuse to buy the Kindle Fire so he gifted his old Kindle 3G to me. Win-win! And I get to play with the Fire when I'm home. I read outside while commuting by foot in bright sunlight, and I get enough eyestrain already from the computer, so the e-ink is a must.

You made me laugh Victoria - because no one in my family understands why I'd want my old Kindle (easier to read) and my new Kindle.

It sounds like you understand!

Having said that though, I probably spend a bit too much on Kindle books. It would be nice if I could figure out how to get the free/cheap books and/or the library books.

In the meantime, I can't help but feel like Amazon has scored here - because although I used to order a ton of books, I still order more stuff for my Kindle than I did with 'real' books. There's something to be said for the 'instant' factor, don't you think? It's terrible! (at least on my pocketbook).

I go to bed, wanting to read something. I might already have a book on my Kindle, but maybe I'm bored with it. It's just *too* easy to go looking and order up another book. GAH!

Addictive, isn't it?

velvetychocolate: LOL, I have two Kindles as well-Kindle Fire was Christmas gift from DH! And I also just recently replaced my older model Kindle with Kindle Touch which I LOVE and carry it with me every single day. I love both for different reasons but I still buy real books sometimes if its a favorite. I have a close friend who was not a huge fan of reading but she wanted to try out the Kindle so I gave her my old one and she loved it. She just bought Kindle Fire for herself and now she is addicted to it!

I'm like Ana - I have a Kindle and I spend probably around $30-$50 per month on books. That said, sometimes I like a book so much that I end up ordering a hardcover copy as well.

...

Nothing thrills me more than being at the airport, hitting the newstand, seeing a bunch of newspapers and magazines that I want to get, and then downloading them onto my Kindle in the waiting area at the gate, in advance of boarding for my flight. That $5 New York Times I wanted? It's 75 cents on my Kindle.

That said, there are some books that I'd just rather have in print. Last fall, I ordered "Parisian Chic" in print because I knew I'd want to refer to it over and over again, and I still love 'real' books. In the meantime though, I have to admit that I have a bit of a Kindle addiction.

It's bad enough (my love of books), that I have two Kindles. One is the regular Kindle and the other is a Kindle Fire, which was a Christmas present from my husband last year. The original Kindle was a present from my Mom. Silly - but I love them both, and I'm not willing to give up either of them. The regular Kindle means I can read in any light, any situation, (it reads like a newspaper) and the Fire is just much more fun to play around with, although it's not the best if you're trying to read in sunlight.

Once again - I have a bit of a book addiction and I *love* my two Kindles.

I read ebooks using the kindle app on my ipad. I probably spend around $10-20 a month on ebooks but also buy regular paper books as well (if you buy used, paper books are cheaper, plus I like the feeling of actually reading a book). I read on the ipad when I am traveling and commuting. In addition to ebooks, I also read the New Yorker every week on the ipad. (Technically, the subscription comes as both paper and electronic version, but I have the paper version sent to my fiance's apartment so he can read it as well).

I'm afraid I'm old fashioned like bionda - I love real paper and hardcover books. That having been said, DH has an iPad and downloads books from the iStore and only spends about $10 per month.

I don't own an e-reader (yet). I spend nothing on books, I get mine from the library. Maybe it's an age thing... I love holding a book and turning the pages. : )

I own a color Nook. I mostly buy books for travel and much prefertraditional paper for the tactile experience and lending ability, but it's useful for my son to play games and read also, without having to haul a million books. My husband shares it and I lend or borrow with friends when possible.

I own a Kindle and I get all my books from the library digital catalog (with rare exceptions). So I have spent a total of maybe $20-30 on e-books.

I am curious about how much other people are spending. I owned a Kindle for the last 3 years and I usually try to not to spend too much because there are a lot of free books on Amazon but i still end up spending at least $30 per month on books because I am an avid reader and I read really fast:((
