Victoria, it really depends on the chosen method of surgery as well as the degree of damage, but per a friend who works in physiotherapy, expect about a month on crutches after the surgery and 3 months of rehab therapy, with various restrictions continuing to apply for 6 months to a year. If it is a sports-related injury, the full extent of recovery needs to be discussed with the doctor, as he may not be able to go back to playing as before even in the longer term.

Even with surgery, the injured knee can also remain susceptible to further problems later in life. However, it is far better to get it done than let it lie---it can only worsen with activity otherwise.

Elizabeth: thanks for good wishes. I don't think my DH sounds as severe as your friend(at least according to what he told me). He is actually able to walk around now without a crutch and he hasn;t had surgery yet so its sounds not too major

Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery is where they make a couple of very small cuts -- one for the repairing tools, and one for the little camera lens on a bendy tube. They use an on-screen camera image to see what they're doing, rather than just cutting a big hole and having a proper shufti.

Victoria, I hate to say this, but one of my good friends had this happen, and it was two full years before she was fully back to normal...or as back to normal as she will be. But her entire Achilles tendon popped right off the bone, which is a very big deal. I don't know if this is what your husband has.

The acute phase of the disability went on for about six months. Best wishes for a quick recovery!

caro: what is key-hole surgery?
From what DH told me doctors telling him that they won't know how major the damage is until during surgery.

Is key-hole surgery an option? The recovery time is much less.

this is going to suck..really..He hurt his knee last week and now its looking like he will be out of commission for several months. I am not sure what to expect with something like this-anyone had this done? I heard that you are pretty much on cratches for entire time.
