My husband is 37 and has had 2 back surgeries, degenerative discs necessitating a back fusion. Following that, he learned he has bad hips, requiring more surgery. All of this in a 4 year period of time. His recovery was very long and painful, and he will live with pain for the rest of his life, if not additional surgeries. Seems to me that healing happens in fits and starts and never goes completely smoothly. Meanwhile, I really think that your husband is at the tail end of recovery - so even though there is a bit of work to be done, you're almost there. </p> <p>Even though it might feel like a setback, it's actually progress and this is another hurdle on the road to complete recovery. </p> <p>You're not moving backwards, you're moving forward. I'm teaching a 5-week summer class, had to get the boy ready to head back to college, and DH is still dealing with health complications...some old, some new. *sigh*</p> <p>Just a quick update for those who weathered the storm with me back in March/April: He has been home from the hospital for 4 months now after suffering severe post-op complications. The nerve damage is healing slowly (as predicted). His right leg is almost back to normal function, and his left is at about 50% function. He's down to a leg brace and a cane (compared to a walker when he first came home), so that's a big improvement. He can drive now, too, which is a great development. Unfortunately, he is now having some trouble with scar tissue and will probably have to have reparative surgery later this month. It's a bummer and a bit of a setback, but you do what you've got to do.</p> <p>My presence might be a little sporadic in the weeks to come. It seems like every time we start to see the light at the end of the tunnel, the tunnel gets a little longer. </p>
