Cute thread!

Hmmm...pretty daggy really. Plastic tree, a few sparkly baubles, some flickering lights...and plenty of tinsel! :-D

Not particularly classy. One day I will have one of those gorgeous fake white coloured trees dressed up in silver and red and go all "classy Christmas" but til then it's throw as many silly decos on the tree as possible!

I like somewhat silly over the top decorating. Our house is a 50's modern and we have/are remodeling it in sort of quasi contemporary/mid-century style. So we decided to stick with 50's inspired ridiculousness for our trees: One white monofilament tree that twinkles and changes colors, the other a super sparkly silver pipe cleaner tree. The monofilament is decorated in all white and silver glass balls and homemade snowflakes, the pipecleaner tree with mercury glass ornaments. I also hang a (fake) garland around our mantel and festoon it as much as possible and hang our (6) homemade stockings. this year I am also hanging about a bazillion hand cut paper snowflakes in the front window and putting lights up around them. Most of my lights are white but this year I'm putting up some pink and amber ones too. FUN!

I'm so surprised that no one decorates the outside of their home with lights! I live in a seventh floor condo in the city, but every year I thread lights throughout the railings of my outside balcony. I love it--I'm the only person in the building that does this, but my building faces a main street in the city, and if you look up, you see a ton of colorful lights. (I personally prefer white lights, but my boyfriend is Jewish and insisted on colored lights--I think because he never got to experience them as a kid.) I think it adds happiness to my block!

ETA: Sorry Kate, I didn't see your post. I'm glad someone else decorates the outside of the house!

We are nature and kid-oriented in our decorations ... we cut our own tree in the forest, we use the extra boughs for swags, tree decorations include dried flowers and silver dollars, wooden beads, and homemade paper snowflakes and pipe cleaner ornaments. So far, on our piano, we have our nativity set and advent calendar and some vintage glass balls.

Very minimal. Last year we bought a live tree (which was dead by February...) and decorated it with an odd collection of ornaments. Some were ornaments I made while growing up, like Oscar the Grouch made out of a black film canister and green pom pom, or a reindeer painted on an old fashioned clothes pin. Additionally, I have received an ornament from Santa every x-mas, and they were often related to what I was into at that age, so I have a variety of ballet, dog, percussion, and other odd ornaments that in some ways map my childhood. It wasn't the classiest x-mas tree, but it felt like home which was good for my first x-mas away from home. I also put up lights on the front of the house, and on some paddle cacti that I stupidly thought didn't have spines (I was SOOO wrong)!

This year we won't be around for xmas, and we have kitties with us now, so we'll skip the tree. I have been lighting candles when we're home because it feels so cozy, and we will definitely put up the outdoor lights.

Oooh, I remember a thread like this from last year (or the year before???). I like simple "over the top" !! LOL!! I do a little crazy with the decorating although I'd like to think it's tasteful. We've got the berry wreath on the door, two lit mini trees flanking the doorway, a large twinkly snowflake in the main window to which my son and I will cut out snowflakes to add. As per our family tradition, we went out and cut an xmas tree this past Saturday though I haven't gotten around to decorating it just yet. We use the same ornaments every year - burgundy, pearl and silver bulbs of various sizes and shapes, crystal encrusted icicles and small white lights. I'll have to add pictures once we get everything going. I definitely keep the kids in mind - I want to it be very festive and give them lots of good memories of our holidays together!

Simple and very naturally elegant for us; it's been growing each year as we get space and surfaces to decorate. We go chop our tree down ourselves when we can, and decorate with lots of small white lights and classic shiny silver/blue/white/crystal ornaments. On walls and tables a natural wreath, festive candles, and pine cones in bowls. And stockings on the mantle.

I apologize for not coming back to this thread for so long, my life got in the way :(
Anyway, now that Thanksgiving is in the past and December 1st is tomorrow, we are more in the holiday spirit!
Girls, all your decorating sound so nice, and I think matching your style persona!
I wish I could visit all your homes at Christmas or at least peek in the windows :)
So far I just put out my little tree, I made it myself couple of years ago. No more big trees for me, lol

good question. My decorating probably leans more toward the "elegance" side, but I like simplicity so I wouldn't say over the top.
I like to use lots of candles, and I'll pull my boxes of decorations out that include a nativity scene, angels, winter "stuff" etc. I also like to set out pictures of the kids from Christmases past. I'm not sure we'll get a tree this year, as we will not be here for Christmas Day.

My decorating is cat-oriented. It means that there won't be any trees in my home, only some removable decorations that my cat won't be able to climb, tear, eat or smash.
(But I prefer my cat to any Christmas decorations, anyway :)).

My holiday decorating is very child-oriented also. We a make origami peace cranes & Stars of David out of beautiful paper and hang them from the ceiling; place boughs in the window sills, set candles out and make wool ornaments for the tree. We wrap a little Christ child in some beautiful fabric and hang it from the ceiling above the nativity manger and each day beginning Dec 1st we let the string down a little bit so that by Dec 25th it is at the manger and my son opens it on Christmas morning. My son always makes some decorations of his own to tape in the windows or hang on the doors.

We're low key and I like to keep decorating simple to complement our old farmhouse. Candles in the windows, boxwood wreaths on the doors and a tree set in a galvanized tub are typically what we do, with magnolia leaves and holly wherever I can tuck it in around hurricane globes and fireplace mantles.

When we lived in a rowhouse in the city, I used to do a Williamsburg style fan over the front door with a pineapple surrounded by apples. That's dicey when the weather can be so variable, though. I'd wire the pineapple on but sometimes an apple would go bouncing merrily astray after a few days of fluctuating temperatures!

Hmm, I'm not sure how I'd categorize our holiday decorating. I guess we're very kid-oriented. We do two electric lighted, moving deer in our front yard, which DD named when she was a mere 3 years old; to me they're over the top and not what I'd have ever done pre-kids, but now I love them. Other than that, we're pretty low key, and mostly decorations created by or with the kids and stuff pulled from our yard.
