I find that those lists are only helpful to a certain degree. I have some (but not all ten) of them and none are in what I would consider constant rotation. Yet, I feel perfectly stylish. I say forget their list and create your own.

What Kari said! There are definitely different definitions of stylish. You can build your wardrobe from basics that suit your style, not someone else's version of style!

I have an LBD but haven't worn it in ages. Black tailored trousers--nope. Trench coat--kinda. Matching skirt and jacket--definitely not. Solid T shirts--well, yes I do wear t-shirts. Pumps--nope. White shirt--nope. Cardigan--I only wear cascading ones. Black boots--well, I love boots so yes. Jeans--of course.

So I don't have most of the items on the list but do I feel stylish? Hell yes!

Jayne, I get by without many of those basics. I haven't worn my crisp white shirt in months (just not needing it right now.) My LBD is a 3/4 sleeved faux-wrap style that I'm wearing a lot right now, but it's not an essential item in my wardrobe. I haven't worn black trousers (or any dress trousers, for that matter) in years. Solid tee shirts I mainly use for layering under other pieces (kind of like solid color camisoles.) For years I did not have black boots, black pumps, or a black purse and got through just fine. I really don't think that *all* stylish women need to have the same basics in their wardrobes, as there's a lot that depends on climate, your lifestyle/work environment/social life, etc.

Please walk away from the list! Everyone's list of basics is different and from the sounds of it the items on this list would become wardrobe orphans x

I just finished re-reading a style book and it listed basics all stylish women should own. As usual the LBD, black tailored trousers, trench coat, matching skirt and jacket, Solid T shirts, pumps, and the white shirt are all on the list.

All of these make me want to run quickly in other direction.

But what I really want to know is where /how do I wear these things? I do not wear pumps to work. I do not want to wear black trousers to work. The white shirt I have but it hangs untouched. I do not ever wear a LBD and I don't feel I have the social life that requires it.

Does this say something about my style or about my lack of it?

I don't really know where to go with this. Just wanted to share my disappointment at not wanting to own the basics that should start me down the stylish road....

to be fair, the ones I do own and use on the list are jeans, cardigan and black boots. 3 out of 10.
