VC, I actually think "dressing for dinner" is a great habit to be in. Very civilized!

Your other Grandma and I are going to have to agree to disagree...

My Grandma always insisted that we had to freshen up and get 'dressed' for dinner, even if you were at the family cabin in the woods. Not kidding - we'd be chopping up firewood, swimming or BBQ'ing, and she'd still say I had to freshen up and get dressed for dinner. This was true for the men too. Wash up, comb hair, and change shirt if need be.

To this day, I still feel weird if I don't at least 'freshen up' for dinner, putting on a bit of lipstick or combing my hair. When my husband and I were renovating our last house, and I'd been painting all day and installing wood flooring - I still felt like I had to at least put on a fresh t-shirt, comb my hair and apply a bit of lipstick, even if we were just getting takeout because our entire kitchen was torn apart.

Meanwhile, my other Grandma says you can't have breakfast until you're dressed and ready for the day. This meant there was no lolling around in PJ's eating cereal or drinking coffee. When I stayed at her house, we'd get up - get to the shower/bath, get dressed/ready and then sit at the dining room table for breakfast. You could hang out and read the morning papers, but you didn't sit down to breakfast until you were dressed for the day.

LOL)....

Another:
When Mom puts her lipstick on she's going somewhere (at least kids think so).

Patty, I love the thing about the belt and the fly button! I am constantly in a state of indecision in that regard, so I think henceforth I will be your belt-loop-threading sistah!

Other than that, hmm... Let's see. Oh, another belt-related one: If there are belt loops in a garment, you MUST put a belt through 'em!

My mom : A lady who wears skirts and heels must wear hose no matter how hot it is.
My dad: A man must have three suits to get married : The one you're asking the father-of-the-bride in , the one on the wedding night, and the one on the Sunday-brunch-after the wedding!

No home is complete without an iron & ironing board.

(I actually do own an iron and tiny ironing board but haven't used them in years - I prefer the "poor man's steaming" for my woven shirts, namely that I hang them up to dry, and when they are still slightly damp I hang them in the bathroom when I'm showering - the steam generally removes any wrinkles or creases. Easy!)

I was just putting on some black socks and had a memory of SO's grandmother telling me never to wear black socks--it will make you weak and sick--do you have any clothing myths/stories? (it was nice to think of her--she was a great lady!!)
My Mom denies she told me this--your belt goes in your pants starting on the side the fly button is on. I do this to this day--men's pants or ladies'.
My SO's mom and grandmother---wearing black socks will make you sick/deplete your energy.
My neighbor--have to get kids' sandals by Easter or there won't be any left in the stores.

Do you have any home brewed myths??
