I admit that it is easier now that they are older. Actually I can't complain that mine are messy (or even argumentative - they are both very easy going and cooperative and need minimal nagging and cajoling) but I do worry that their non cleaning parents are not instilling "discipline".
i do remember allowing a major hot wheel track set up all through the hall and into the living room for a mom imposed two day deadline on a rainy weekend. And building forts with chairs, cushions and sheets on another rainy day.
No harm, no foul and it' would not have embarrassed me in the least to have a neighbor see us all having fun

Christianne-
I have always had my kids pick up their toys as part of their bedtime routine- having a place for everything helps. They eventually got to the point where they just put things away when they were done to make it easier. My kids are responsible for their own rooms and washing- they clean their bedroom once a week, wash their bedlinens once a week, do their other laundry as needed and they both choose to keep their rooms neat and tidy- sorting, purging and deep cleaning as they feel is necessary.

I have grown kids at home, but I homeschooled all of their school years so they were *always* at home! LOL So, in order to keep my sanity I adopted Flylady for the common areas, gave the kids each their own laundry day (and taught them how to do their own) and let their rooms have doors that closed! As long as no food stayed in their rooms (not a problem with 2 beagles in the house!) I didn't care (and still don't) what their room looked like. I simply closed the door and voila, the problem went away! LOL

I have to say though, that they have all become relatively organized, (one more so than the other two).

Both my mom and grandma were more the type to say - it's a beautiful day so let's go to the park instead of housework - and I think I followed that lead. What I have tried to do with little ones is teach them to clean as they go (that is generally what I try to do when I cook for example) and it makes life easier. My DH and I are both collector types and not "flylady" disciplined so we have to make an effort that honestly neither one is natural at.

It is hard with kid's rooms. I want them to have freedom to play with toys, set up hot wheels tracks for a few days, etc. but also to not feel overwhelmed by having to clean. I try to never use cleaning as punishment. They (especially DD - she is great in kitchen) are very good about doing their bits in the house though. DS loves washing the cars and is recently in charge of recycling (and he is strict about it!).

How do those of you with kids deal with kids spaces? Do you enforce the put all the toys away after playing rule? Maybe I should have them make their beds every morning but really it is an effort to get everyone out (and typically DH is on his own in that) so I have never bothered. We just use Euro style duvets so it's easy to fluff them out on bed quick as needed.

Interesting thoughts here!

When I live alone, especially when living in an apartment that is newer-type construction (better sealed against dust) I really can go weeks without having to clean because I am a neat person. Since I don't really have allergies (I tend to only be allergic to chemicals and large amounts of mold) I can dust only when it becomes visually distracting, and I don't have to vacuum or mop often (esp. since I am a no-shoes home). With my heart issues, vacuuming and scrubbing are the things that kill me, and I am sensitive to chemicals.

Of course, part of it is because of what people joke about as my "germaphobia"--- let's just say I am not much of an entertainer!

I'm immune deficient and tend to be very thorough with avoiding germs, frequent hand washing, never touching my face in public--- but it is nice to have a place where I don't have to be super vigilant. I try to keep as much of the "ick" out of my home as possible. So shoes usually come off at the door-- things that have been exposed to a lot of germs get set down straight away on a easily disinfected surface so I can sanitize them before they go back to their homes (keys, sunglasses I've had on and off, water bottles I was touching all day-- even my wallet). The first thing I do when I come home is scrub my hands before I touch anything else, and anything that has to be touched to get into the house gets disinfected after I come home for the day and frequently otherwise. I wipe down counters and faucets, door knobs, light switches and the seat surface of the potty frequently and also spray the shower down with disinfectant often (especially if I have been working out or swimming at the gym-- got to kill any nasties that I brought home on my body). I've had a hard time contracting staph infections from weird places before, so known sources of potential staph and viruses I take precautions with. Gym clothes, clothes from the hospital or docs office, ect go straight into the wash with a clothing disinfectant and or hot water. Dishes go straight into the dishwasher or are washed immediately-- I don't need them sitting building extra bacteria that I'm handling, and I like a clean sink.

Of course, when I live with other people, this doesn't always work. I still try to keep some personal space where I can just hang out and not worry about wiping my eyes if I am reading a sappy book, but most ppl don't want to live taking precautions that aren't necessary for them, so I deal with a lot more illness and a lot less "relaxation" in my house. Plus, most of the men in my family wear boots and don't want to take them off all the time and tend to just get dirtier, so I have to clean the dirt more often as well. Where I live now we have a fireplace that is used a lot in the winter, have humidity issues, and dust storms in the summer, plus multiple men, two dogs, and a person that works around children (she is a vector, I swear). I could clean and organize all day, every day and never have the place clean.

I am spoiled -- after we moved from an 800sf house to one almost three times that size, my husband insisted on hiring someone to come clean once a week. We eventually found an individual, not a company, who does a great job and is so sweet -- we love her!

I was reluctant to agree to this at first because 1) I don't love the idea of other people cleaning up our messes -- I'm kind of private that way, and 2) I also have a hard time paying someone to do tasks that I am physically very much capable of doing myself.

My husband pointed out that his mother cleaned houses for many years, and that we were financially secure enough to help someone who needed the work by giving them this job to do, and that my time was better spent on building my new career (I'd just given up graphic design for art). Now I'm glad he talked me into it! We have three dogs, and the vacuuming alone is quite a task.

I cannot stand living in clutter, so I clean up the kitchen after meals, and tidy things up every morning before I get ready to leave the house for the day. It's easier now that my stepson isn't living with us all the time -- my husband is a neat-freak like me, so he usually keeps things clean too. I do laundry every weekend.

It helps - hopefully your sister's visit will spur you along.

Sometimes I am my own worst enemy. DH says it seems that as soon as I have got the kitchen looking clean I'll start some involved cooking project. And I do spend time here on YLF instead of doing housework ( I loved Fruitful's comment on Marley's thread recently) although it can work quite well as an incentive (1hr work, 15 min on YLF!)

Cleaning is not my strong point, and I am not very organised, despite finding out about flyday about 10 years ago. Sometimes I feel that cooking and washing (and line drying) and dishwashing for 5 people, plus child raising 3 kids is all I am up to - so cleaning gets put off.

I do however have people over to my house a lot (single people for tea most mondays nights, bible studies tue morning and wed night, plus less regular youth group meetings, play/coffee dates, guests for BBQs etc) and that forces me to keep at least the public areas reasonably decent ( though I subscribe to the philosophy of welcoming people however my house looks!) The girls rooms get pretty bad ( I must have worked for an hour on DD4's bedroom yesterday) and the master bed and bathroom get neglected (though having visitors to stay helps there too, because we often give our room to visiting couples and so I have to clean it )

Although the article differentiated between tidiness and cleanliness I do find it hard to get one without the other. It takes me a long time to clean my house because I have to tidy it first. And with 3 little girls setting up "shop" and "houses" and doing craft, it can get messy very quickly.

Things are getting easier as they get older, and especially now the youngest goes to school 5 days a fortnight. I am doing quite a bit of rethinking how much time I need to stay at home to keep things going, how much I can exercise, how much I can get out and do other things. It has only been a few weeks, so I am still in transition. I am still at the stage where is it quite peaceful and encouraging just to be able to work on housework without constant interruptions.
I do have a night and morning sort of routine, but don't get that much done in the evening - often just the washing up, which if I have been neglectful, could encompass the entire days dishes. I do fold washing or do other tasks while watching TV, but not vacuuming or cleaning. Getting through the whole evening routine and the kids off to bed can be quite draining. I am trying to cut the sandwiches the night before for school lunches, as my only new initiative at this point
Thanks for the link - it was timely for me

I'm another flybaby. I like Alicat's term "Flylady light". I can't stand clutter, so I pick up and empty the kitchen trash every evening when I start the dishwasher. In the morning, I make my bed and put away the dishes. My kids are on their own with their rooms and bathroom. I basically clean up after myself as I go with everything else. Hubs is no slob either, so that really helps. As soon as I get enough laundry to do a load, I put one in (every few days--kids do their own).

The only other thing I'm really good about is doing the Monday morning "house blessing" which is 10 minutes each of emptying trash cans, dusting, sweeping/mopping, vacuuming, polish mirrors/door glass, and changing my sheets. I can get through it because I know it'll be done in an hour. And it counts as a workout too, since I have to race to get it all done in time!

I live in a really small house so cleaning doesn't take long at all - I do the bathroom & kitchen every day and then usually a different room every other afternoon. I'm also very tidy so I like to clear up as I go. Once a week I make John sort out his pile of stuff that he's accumulated that week! He's a hoarder & doesn't even notice mess!

My husband's off work at the moment & I really don't like doing the cleaning when he's around so lately I've been going to the gym or out on my bike on an afternoon & doing a "big" clean at the weekend. I love to iron on a Sunday afternoon watching brain-dead tv!

Even though there's only 2 of us I've always struggled keeping up with the clothes washing & drying but the husband's taken charge of that at the moment & it's all done!

I am in awe of your cleaning schedules I'm embarrassed to admit that I struggle to keep my bedroom clean and tidy!! God knows how I'll manage when I eventually move out and get my own place. My current routine (if you can call it that!) goes

"Oh dear I can't see the carpet for dust I best vacuum"
"Eww the cat threw up on the bed I better change the sheets"
"I'm about to run out of underwear I need to put some washing on" etc etc
The only things I do with any regularity are emptying my bedroom bin on a Wednesday morning for the binmen and folding back the duvet cover every morning so the bed can air though that could be more that I can't be bothered to make it in the morning!!
I think I need an organised schedule like you x

I follow along (loosely) to Flylady and have been doing so for years now. I have a "Morning routine" and an "evening routine" and then a Zone per week, along with a "mission" chore (in the zone of the week) per day. Works well for me. I feel like my house is guest ready at a moments notice, and I never commit more than 30 minutes a day to cleaning (and that's on a really intensive day.) I much prefer this way to the old fashioned "Saturday morning clean the whole house from top to bottom and waste my precious weekend" cleaning! LOL

In theory, I do a quick, full house clean every Tuesday. Other days I do a bit here and there, focusing on one room specifically every week. Every weekday, I do laundry. I've tried several different methods of chore organization, but I just don't stick to them. I'm a rebel!... and lazy.

Wow you are super organised - well done :)

In our house:

* Every morning the bed is made and the kitchen made spotless after breakfast is cooked.
* Every dinner time the kitchen surfaces, cooker and kitchen floor are cleaned after washing up.
* Saturday morning - the whole morning is given over to a thorough house clean. I do the dusting, clean both bathrooms and do about 2 loads of washing and my husband deep cleans the kitchen (his domain), sterilises the kitten litter tray and does all the hoovering. Once we've finished together, we can spend the afternoon chilling.

It works well for us :0)

For the last year I have had no schedule because I have been sick, so we hired a cleaning company and I did things as I could,

Coincidentally, I am cleaning today ( taking a break) . So the schedule that I am trying out now, is to wash the floors in the house, put clean linens on all the beds and dust on Weds. ( the cleaning crew now comes every other weds. ).

I do the dishes, clean the counters, and sweep the kitchen every day. I do a Swiffer Wetjet on the kitchen floor every 2 days. I also sweep the family room every day ( when I feel well).

I do the upstairs bathrooms, quickly a couple of times a week before I hop into the shower on those nights. When I get out of the shower, I spinkle baking soda and a little Castile soap and scrub. I keep a floor steamer in the closet so I can do a super floor clean and bottom of the toilet quickly and easily. I also clean off the counters every couple of days when I get rid of face cloths. I spritz with a biodegradable cleaner and wipe off with the face cloth and toss the face cloth in the hamper. I have to clean down the sink every day, because my husband and kids leave toothpaste and shavings in the sink. DRIVES ME BATTY !!

Saturday mornings, the family pitches in. The kids strip their beds, pick up in their rooms and so on. Weekends are also for laundry.

I have no energy left at night once the kitchen and counters are done. Maybe in a couple of months I can strart doing it again. I do the oven once a month or a little more ( depending on how often we use it ) and I do the fridge every 6 six weeks, though I sponge down the shelves before putting in groceries every week.

Other things, I do as I can during the week.

You and Manidipa are so organized!

I confess that I am pretty spoiled. My DH has been either working from home or part time as subcontractor for last 9 years so he does the majority of house cleaning. When I was working, I was in charge of "outside" chores such as grocery shopping or dry cleaning.

Lately, he has picked up more projects outside of house and I am home but I can't say I am on a routine. What he is not great at (and I didn't have time) is organizing closets and things so I have been focused on that. I will clean as I go and then DD and I vacuum and do bathrooms on Saturday mornings.

I have been doing a lot of laundry randomly. I really dislike cleaning house. Diana describes me before kids

My laundry days are every 3 days --- if the date is divisible by three, one or the other of us puts the laundry on (me while my tea steeps, SO after breakfast). Clothes air-dry all through the day; next day I sort out the ironing and mending piles; fold away the rest. Then the day after I do the ironing of delicates; the 'press' man comes by for the rest (one of the cheap luxuries of living in India).

Daily tasks include making the bed in the morning; taking out the trash; watering the plants; cooking for the day; washing up that day's dishes by hand; cleaning the porcelain sinks; disinfecting the kitchen counters; sweeping the living room, kitchen and driveway; mopping the kitchen at day's end and tidying up the bedroom before bedtime. Ovens and gas stove get wiped down after use. Who does what depends on our level of busyness that day. Often one or the other is travelling, so it is a solo act half the month.

Weekly tasks include sweeping or vacuuming the bedroom; cleaning the bathrooms; changing sheets and rotating sets of towels (we just keep a whole stack in each bathroom and launder the entire set as one). And weeding, fertilizing or pruning/mowing in the garden, depending on the season.

Everything else is on a monthly schedule that sees dusting done in each room 3-4 times a month (based on traffic), deep cleaning of floors and surfaces, washing windows, polishing wooden furniture, oiling chopping boards and wooden bowls, scrubbing stone-tiled floors, laundering the sofa covers and curtains, cleaning out the car of accumulated stray objects, cleaning out the oven and other appliances, cleaning out the kitchen exhaust, preemptive action on the drains everywhere, cleaning the mirrors (the non-bathroom ones), closet clean-up and reorganizing (I say closet, but actually it's bags and drawers), clearing out the fridge and larder, tackling the household filing etc.

This is great, Khris. I need to work on a schedule. My cleaning is rather haphazard--I vacuum daily because of kitty, dust when I see dust, do laundry on an as needed basis (usually at least a load a day plus extra on the weekends,) mop on Mondays, clean bathrooms on Friday, lightly clean the kitchen and put everything away after dinner each night. I do litter box duty twice a day and change litter/clean the box monthly.

It seems like I should have enough time to get all of this done but for some reason, I don't. I'm in chauffeur mode as soon as school is out for the day. I also end up going to the store a couple days a week (at least) to pick up groceries.

Ha, my cleaning (non)schedule basically goes like this: at random inconvenient times, I go "OMG the bedroom/kitchen/bathroom is such a mess! I can't live for ONE MORE SECOND in this mess! Must clean RIGHT NOW." I'm sure I've annoyed my neighbors more than once by vacuuming at 11pm.

I probably should get on some sort of cleaning schedule. It would prevent the above kind of freaking out when the mess reaches critical mass.

Back in the day when I was a working mom with no hired help, I did something very similar to the post you linked, except I saved up all the "chore of the day" tasks and did them on Saturdays.

I still do the daily routine but now I have a cleaning service to do the other stuff. (Except laundry. Everybody in the house has done his or her own laundry for lo, these many years.) For years they came weekly, but now that DS is up and out and DH is traveling for work most of the time, I've cut 'em back to every other week and I use the savings to buy more clothes! LOL

Wow you are organised! I'm going to be honest - in India, we all have a lot of domestic help and I have found it tough to take control of the house after moving abroad!

I don't do anything in the morning since I have to go to college! I might make the bed if I have time, but I'm usually in too much of a hurry.

In the afternoon, I handwash all the dishes and put them away. I also tidy the living room, make the bed and do a little dusting. My husband loves to cook, so he usually makes dinner but I've been trying to make more of an effort to cook. After dinner, I clean the table and wipe down the induction and kitchen counter.

Once a week, usually on Wednesdays, I sweep and mop the kitchen. On weekends, my husband and I divide the house into two and clean it properly. I usually take on vacuuming and mopping, while my husband cleans the bathroom and toilet.

Phew!

Oh my, I'm impressed! I don't have a cleaning schedule. I just do it randomly and on Saturday morning. Since I don't own a dishwasher I do the dishes after eating/cooking. And the bathroom , a little bit each day.

Yesterday, I saw this great post at one of my new favorite Home Decor blogs about cleaning:

http://littlegreennotebook.blo.....-away.html

She does something similar to me in that we both have certain things that we do every morning, every evening, and then a daily chore (mind you, my kids help in all of this- I'm not doing it alone). Here's my schedule:

http://chewyspaghetti.blogspot.....-2012.html

It made me wonder how others divide their chores up.
Anyone care to share their cleaning schedule?
