I have a contoured latex pillow that I like. I switch between that and a down pillow depending on my mood. I had a memory foam pillow once that I did not like very much (too hard, unbreathable).

I am with LeahJames re the latex pillows (mine is a Sealy). I have a history of neck issues and have used the chiro-suggested ones in the past, but the latex (bought several years ago) has been the best for me.

cloud9, I think that is very personal thing. I have bought foam pillow for myself after using my husband's every time he was away and loved it, as I need strong support for the neck and since having my own I wake up noticeably more rested than before. But, our bodies are different, differently balanced (or not), we all do different jobs that put our spines under different strains, so it is very hard to give a generic answer. If you can try it, that's the best way to see if it is for you.

One thing to check is if it smells. I had one pillow that went back to the shop the morning after I had used for the first time. Foam is not natural material and the last thing you want is to inhale some toxic fumes while you are resting.

I have a latex pillow - it's great. It's got a bit more bounce than a memory foam one, as I tend to wiggle around a lot when I sleep it works for me. The memory foam takes it time in popping back up so you can settle down again.

Another thing to consider with memory foam is that it's *very* insulative! I run warm so it had me sweating all night. You can't flip it either cause the supporting shape is on the one side only.

I have a Tempurpedic bed, which came with Tempurpedic pillows. I personally don't like the pillow--just never found it comfortable--but my boyfriend (who has severe back and shoulder pain) always sleeps with his. If you have significant back pain, I think that the Tempurpedic bed will probably make a bigger difference than the pillow (although the pillow is far more economical!).

The brand I have is Dentons....it's sold at Myer. Was marked down from $100 to $45 in Boxing Day sales......my only Myer purchase of the day! My brother uses the same pillow and recommended it to me. Do let us know what your physio recommends too!!

Interesting discussion girls - I've been thinking my pillow will need to be replaced to help my current issues too. So thank you for your input.

I will ask my physio on Monday what he recommends...

Tam which brand is yours?

I bought a countoured pillow a few weeks ago after experiencing an exacerbation of my ongoing neck issues that lasted over a fortnight. For 2 weeks I woke up poorly rested rested with an awful heading. Buying this new pillow really seems to have done the trick, although it took 2 nights to start working. So hard to know though isn't it??

I have used three different contour neck pillows. Two different Tempurpedic sizes were too firm for me. They soft up by morning (when I have really warmed them up), but are too firm when cool at bedtime.

I DO need the neck support, so I ended up trying (and LOVING) a small foam contour neck pillow from Macy's - it is considered travel size! The foam is better for my fussy neck. It might have been Homedics or something like that.

My chiropractor had me try a water based pillow and some foam pillow with side sleeping ledges and a cervical support wedge for back sleeping :-(

My Physical Therapist always recommends medium or firm high quality down pillows as the most malleable for whatever hurts you, but I did not like them.

I have a veritable closet full of pillows for my bad neck, but love my travel one. (I keep one soft, fairly thin additional pillow for those nights when I'm hurting and need variety - over or under the neck pillow)

I have a Tempurpedic pillow prescribed by my Chiropractor. They warned of self-diagnosing pillows because that could have just as negative an impact as the wrong non-MF pillow.
That being said, after a night or two of neck discomfort (it takes getting used to) I've slept better ever since.

I do use one since I have trouble with my C4 in my neck. I've had it at least 10 years but I honestly don't find it that comfortable! I actually put another very soft, thin feather pillow on top of it. Otherwise my ears get sore - it's almost hard, if you can picture that. Mine is a true Tempurpedic brand bought through my chiropractor in medium thickness, I believe. And be sure the fatter side is under your neck, and your head slopes down toward the thinner side.

So I can't feel fab if I don't have a good night's sleep, and lately I can't seem to get them.

I hear these memory foam pillows do wonders for sleep/neck/shoulder pains (which i get quite often). Do you use one? Which brand? Are they helpful? TIA!
