Jenava-good to know - You could spend valuable time waiting for the check. I'm hoping some of what my daughter learned in HS will come back to her. Maybe I should enroll in a french class before we go! That would be ambitious!

Jill-I was really tempted to book an apartment, found several absolutely lovely ones to choose from. I think if it were my husband and me I would in a heart beat. I'm just a little apprehensive with my daughter. I'm putting on my Big Girl pants just to go without him. Having someone handy to ask questions and arrange for transportation will help me feel a little less anxious. Thanks for your recommending this as an option. I am going to be using that as an option in the future for sure!

Glad to hear you found a hotel, Carole. I'll be interested in how you like it -- since we never stayed in any hotels while we lived there, I never know one to recommend when people ask!

So many people in Paris speak/understand English, it might surprise you. They just won't let on that they do!

Carole, my hubby and i didn't speak a lick of French, either! We learned to ask for for the check, since usually there was only one waiter for lots of tables and the French consider it rude to present the bill w/o the patron asking for it...We did French only menus (most non-tourist places, except fancy places, only have French menus anyway) and we did teach ourselves some French words for food (esp. our favorites foods...(-:), then we just pointed to the menu to order. It worked out OK.

We got a lot of good guidebooks, but the language was a slight barrier, esp. at the Louvre since none of the signage on the exhibits is in English!

In Berlin everything was in several languages...I guess that just goes to show what a cultural difference there is...

Angie, I don't speak ANY french. My daughter took french in High school, but she is in no way fluent, so you have helped me make this desicion! Hotel Bretonnaire, it is!
I'm so looking forward to experiencing Paris again. I was hoping to find a non-touristy area with great little shops, cafes, etc. Thank you so much for your help in narrowing down all the choices! Merci!

Unless you are fluent in French, you'll feel more in control at a hotel where there will be someone who can speak English - especially in Paris. Sounds like Hotel Bretonnaire awaits you :0)

All I can say is don't go anywhere touristy and you'll eat the BEST food. Have lots of cheese, chocolate and pastries. I'll be thinking of you!

Thanks for the clue, Angie. Seems your hotel is in the general area of the one we are considering, Hotel Bretonnaire. At least I know we are in the right spot!

Jenava-thanks for the recommendation for Vacation in Paris. I had actually checked that sight and considered an apartment. The one you stayed in looks absolutely lovely and what a bargain! Just not sure if we would miss not having a front desk or someone to help if we need it. I was wondering if they might have someone available for restaurant recommendations, or help with taxi or shuttle to and from airport things like that. This is only my second time in Paris, so I might feel a little more secure with someone to "go to". What do you think?

We stayed in this apartment in the Marais and it was fabulous...It's near the pompidou center. They have other places all in great areas around Paris.

I would highly recommend this agency.

Blast! I *cannot* remember the name of the hotel we stayed in 2 years ago, but I'd check out Expedia and Trip Advisor. Have you done that?

Our hotel was just off rue de Rosiers - the main road in le Marais. TINY but fabulous.

I've been checking into the Le Marais area and it looks like a great place for us to spend our Paris vacation. I'm wondering if you know of any hotels in particular that you would recommend. I'm leaning toward the Hotel Bretonnerie, it's very affordable and seems to have good reviews. Any other ideas would be most welcome! Thanks Angie....
