I'm trying to grow mine out, but it seems to be taking forever. I've had a pretty short bob for about four years now, and I'm just bored with it. I'd like it to get to about my shoulder blades, but that might take five years, and by then, I'll probably be bored again and cut it all off.

I just went pretty short with my hair and very happy about it: so much freedom and not that hot in summer.
I was going between long hair and different length of bobs for quite a long time. Before I had kids in my early twenties my hair was thick and had nice reddish-golden highlights. Pregnancies affected my hair badly - I had to cut it short during the first one because I was loosing it in spades - and it did not completely recover after that.
Also - to Kari's point - I was the one who always pulled it into ponytails as it irritated me hanging loose. Believe me that was not a fab look.
So even though my hair grows very quickly I do not want it long anymore. I like the freedom of short hair too much!

I'm not growing my hair, but I did a few years ago. Oddly enough it took me a long time, I enjoyed it for about a year and then daydreamed constantly about cutting it off (and finally did!).

One thing I noticed with my short curly/wavy hair is the cut made all the difference. I have photos with my hair at a similar length, but my bangs back and I don't like it at all. But now that I've found a cut that works (and yes, I admit, I straighten it) and I'd choose it over long hair.

So although length might the answer, I hope she also invests some thought on how to make it work for her now. Life's too short to always want something you don't have.

I am growing my hair out a little bit. For the last several years I've had variations on a chin to shoulder length bob and am just getting a little bored of it so I'm letting it grow a little bit. Right now it's a couple of inches below my shoulders and I'm probably going to let it grow to maybe the bottom of my shoulder blades. I am enjoying being able to put it up at times. I am honestly pretty bad about keeping up my stylist appointments so I tend to go too long between them, and with long hair it is easier to get away with that (although my roots will still show, but oh well...). I don't think I'll let it grow too long - once upon a time i had waist length hair which was very pretty but super heavy (I have a lot of hair!) and would actually sometimes give me headaches from its weight, especially when it was tied in a ponytail or something.

So the reason I initially went for the short hair was that I wanted to look older (I was in my early 20s at the time and I think I look young for my age) and now that I am in my early 30's that is not really an issue!

ETA: photos - first pic is short hair and second pic is how it is right now.

I have the most conservative stylish when it comes to cutting. Instead of being like the 99% of stylists that cut too much, she tends to cut too little. So after a few months, I'm always surprised at how long my hair has grown.

Astrid, you have gorgeous hair, both in texture and color. It seems as though you can wear short and long hair well.

Scarlet, your hair looks wonderful in that picture. I've never been able to figure out how to get my bangs to lie like that. Goodness knows I've tried.

And Kate, your bob looks fab, both when you cut it in Feb and now. So sleek and pretty:)

Thanks everyone, it was really interesting to read all the responses! I agree that a favourite hair length and cut is very personal and that your taste can change over time. I also agree that it helps with the growing process if the cut is updated from time to time, although that can be problematic and hinder your progress if you cut too much off.

My friend had really beautiful long hair back then, before she got herself a super short cut. The problem is that she has also curly hair and the stage between short and chin length just looks terrible on her (it did on me, too!). Every time they get longer she dislikes it so much that she cuts it again. Maybe all she really needs is a skilled hairdresser to cut her curls to a tolerable do while they are growing out.

I agree that my short do would probably have looked better if my hair would have been cut differently. I'm not going to cut it short again in the near future, though. I want to have it longer still, although with a nice cut and healthy ends. I completely agree with Kari about hating long hair for the sake of length, I don't think it looks good on anybody if the ends aren't properly trimmed and healthy. For my part, I have to say that caring for my longer hair is much easier than caring for the short do, because I do nothing with it and just let the curls be.

I toy with the idea of going back to near waist length sometimes but I've been keeping around mid back or shoulder blade length for the last few years. I am growing out the bangs and frustrated with that process right now.

You can see from my profile pic how short mine was. Now it's in a bob to my chin. I am going for just grazing the shoulders, all one length bob. My hair is crazy heavy and coarse, although straight with a tiny bit of wave. I want it long enough to put in a pony tail or to put up when I am working at the torch or around open flame, but not so long that it takes days to dry.

I'm actually going a bit shorter in the back every time I get my hair cut. I'm trying to quietly get my hubby used to my hair a bit shorter. If I went directly to shoulder length, he would not be happy.

I'm on team Short Hair with Lyn, at least as far as it pertains to my own locks. Long hair was so much more trouble and it really didn't look good on me, even with a killer cut. I have very dense but fine straight hair, and when it is long it just lays flat, plastered to my head. Short hair is a million times more flattering on my face. I'm happiest when it is chin length or shorter.

Quite the opposite for you, Astrid - your long hair is beautiful and full and suits you really well, though I think you also look adorable with short hair - it just highlights your features differently.

I do want to say what drives me nuts is when I have friends who work to grow their hair out, only to wear it pulled back in a very simple ponytail all the time - to me, that defeats the aesthetic purpose of having beautiful long hair! I'd much rather see it styled or left long. My other pet peeve is seeing people who let their hair grow very, very long just for the sake of length, and refuse to even get the ends trimmed, even if it is too long to look good and healthy.

Yep, I'm growing mine out. Over the past decade, I have grown my hair out, chopped it off, donated 10", and then repeated. This time I kept my hair short for almost a year before beginning the growing out process, and I'm still no sure if I actually want long hair again.

Here's my hair the last time it was long (January 2010), after I got it cut (February 2010), and now at shoulder length (this is actually from May 2011, so it's a little bit longer now).

I had a crazy-cute short cut (think Amy Adams in Julie & Julia), but it was SO MUCH WORK. So, yes, I'm growing it out. Also, when I leave it wavy/curly, it works a million times better shoulder length or longer (and I've officially given up straightening it).

hair is so personal and individual! like elisabeth, i've really enjoyed short and long styles myself, tho currently i'm short haired. for me, i find the styles i like best respect the natural texture of the hair. in your short hair pic, Astrid, it looks like you are just 'smushing' your naturally big and curly hair into a helmet - in the long pic you're letting the beautiful curls do their glorious thing! (btw, my neighbor has very similar colored/textured hair - just a little lighter. it's my absolute fave ever!!!) so i wonder if you had had a short hairdo that brought out the gorgeous curl and bounce, if you would like that more than the one you had.

a lot of people definitely look better with either long or short hair, but the particular cut is key. it also makes a difference what type of upkeep is involved - you need to be able to commit to whatever it takes to keep it looking good in order to feel happy about your hair. having recently gone from long, not very stylish hair to a short, stylish 'do, i can testify that your hair makes a major impact on your overall style!

give your friend my encouragement - as elisabeth says, getting a nice shaping a couple fo times a year while you're growing out makes it more tolerable. also, a strong gel (LA Looks Sport Extreme is cheap, never flakes and has amazing hold) and a few barettes help. happy sunday! stpeh

Yep, I'm currently growing my hair, because last summer I had it cut into a cute chin-length style that I really liked, but it was too short to put in a ponytail and it drove me crazy on the really hot days. So this summer I wanted it to be long enough to at least get into a ponytail. I'll probably cave and cut it again come fall. :-)

My hair has gone from short to long and back again so many times I can't count. I like all lengths, providing it's a good cut. I think that's the key: get a skilled hairdresser. I've never had trouble growing out my hair, but it sure helps to have someone reshape it properly now and then during the growing-out process!

I'm not trying to go longer, but I wanted to chime in, as I really feel that long hair has solved all my hair problems. If your friend isn't happy with her current hair, even though she seems to have done everything else, then it's worth a try! My longer hair appears fuller, is easier to style (just let it down!), and just plain suits my face like shorter hair did not (even shoulder-length).

With today's strengthening hair care products, she can definitely get there if she sticks to it.

I just sent this two pictures to a friend in order to encourage her to keep on growing her hair longer. She wears her hair short and wants longer hair again, but feels like she won't ever get there. If I look at the first pic I see how awful my hair looked back then with the center part. God, I'm happy it's longer now. The period of time between the first and the second pic are 3 1/2 years. I had my ends trimmed every six months.

Are you trying to grow your hair longer? How do you want it to look?
