I wonder if some of these people are emotionally unstable? Sounds like there could be mental health issues involved.

Yep. I watched the same episode that you did, Victoria. It's hard to believe people can be like that. Which is worse? Being an extreme cheapskate or being a hoarder?

I don't see what's appalling about washing wipes. We do that with our kids (and use cloth diapers too). It isn't something we practice as a family, but washing a bucket of soiled wipes isn't that gross, really, and the money we have saved and waste we have eliminated (heh) is staggering.

I don't think I would be dumpster diving for food though.

On the episode I watched a family was using cloth rags instead of toilet paper, depositing them in a container and then washing them to re-use. That was appalling, but what finally made me change the channel was the man who cooked goat (or maybe it was sheep?) heads for a celebratory dinner. "Reality" TV at its worst!

this is a show that shows people who take saving money to the whole new level. I am all for saving money as my family was quite poor when I was growing up but most of these people aren't poor and some have hundreds of thousands in the bank. One of the things that I have seen:
young proffesional going to shop for food in a dumpster, turning off her gas and using hot plate instead, not buying new or even used/seconhand clothes(ever) and not buying any furniture inless its something she found in the dumpster
Another guy who took showers with clothes on so clothes could be washed at the same time because he didn't want to use washing machine. He didn't want to actually buy cups to drink out of so he was using old yogurt cartons. And because he didn't want to waste water, he only flushed toilet once a week.

But the guy who made the biggest impression on me didn't want to spend money on anniversary gift for his wife so he went to dumpster and got-old wilter flowers, rusted metal teapot and he also bought her a bottle of water because it was the cheapest thing in the store. While he was in the restaurant with his wife, he was going to other tables and asking people for their leftover food to take home.
I am pretty speechless
