Not sure if this would help you, but thought I'd share. I use a gently exfoliating facewash with lavender in it daily when I shower each morning. http://www.lushusa.com/shop/pr.....-bare-skin

Coupled with a light spf15 moisturizer (Olay), that keeps my skin nicely balanced. I don't put anything else on my face and my skin has gone back to behaving and looking lovely like in my early 20s

I'm having great success with Environ. You can only get it from salons x

ETA it's a skincare range but they do facials too x

Hi Di,

I have a lot of experience with this (unfortunately I did not make it through high school, college or beyond with clear skin). I have used both tetracyclines (is that what your doc prescribed?) and topicals. Sometimes taking the cycline for a few months clears up the initial problem and then you can go off of it. I'm not a huge proponent of the antibiotics myself, but I don't think it's a terrible idea to take them for a few months while using a topical and then staying with the topical and stopping the antibiotic. You'd be amazed at how quickly the antibiotics start helping.

Did your doctor prescribe topicals too? I've tried several, and I really like Azelex (azelaic acid) and clenia (sulfur), which are the ones I currently use. I use Azelex in the morning and clenia at night. This combo works well and the azelex is super hydrating so my skin doesn't get dry at all. I've never tried retin a, which seems to be a popular one too. The nice thing about both azelex and retin a is that they are also anti-aging because of their exfoliating and moisturizing properties. So you're taking care of your skin in multiple ways

I also personally believe that diet can make a difference. I find that dairy seems to bother my skin (via putting my hormones into overdrive), but it's a fairly individual thing. You might want to look into this.

As for vitex, not to contradict chewyspaghetti but I wouldn't recommend it. I took it for some time after coming off of the bcp to "normalize my hormones"...slowly but surely I was losing weight until I got down to 97 pounds (I did not find this positive). I finally realized that it was because of the vitex. It also did nothing to clear my skin (I actually think it might have been worse while I was taking it). I used to think that natural herbal remedies were harmless, but they can be just as harmful as prescription drugs if not worse because they don't undergo any regulation.

Anyway, I would definitely try a topical. It's so much cheaper, more convenient and effective IMO than getting facials. Good luck!

Hmmmm....there has to be a reason that it is on your chin and cheek. Do you touch your face a lot to think, etc?

Last year, I had an a-ha moment: I was having chin breakouts like no other and couldn't figure it out....come to find out, due to multi-tasking and letting the phone smash against my chin/cheek while doing other things was causing crazy breakouts constantly.

Like you, I would try to find an alternate solution to an oral Rx. Perhaps a topical like some of the other gals suggested?

I wish you the best of luck in finding a solution. <3

I've had good luck with stubborn areas that continually breakout using dermabrasion...doesn't clear my completely, but if I have one particular spot (chin, side of face) that won't heal I've found it helpful.

i've also successfully used a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel for trouble spots. I use a large gob and massage it in very gently until it's completely absorbed (can take a few mins). I've been using this one:

http://www.danielkern.com/prod.....ment-2.htm

ETA: I'm on BC, which I think helps a ton. The few times I've taken a break I do break out...I think with adult acne it's hard to avoid without medication. At least uisng the Benzoyl Peroxide I feel like I know how to treat breakouts quickly so they keep to a minimium.

Another vote for topical meds! I use a facial wash and a lotion, both prescription-only, both perfectly fine for use during pregnancy. Did your dermatologist prescribe oral meds?

You would have to do a little research to make sure, but I think that Vitex is ok during pregnancy (whereas something like Black Cohosh which is also great for hormones, is not).

I suggest trying Vitex (an herb that helps balance hormones- also known as chaste berry) for it. As Elly says- it's probably your hormones that are affecting your skin. It takes a long time to get into your system enough to see results (possibly months), but this has worked great for my teenage son, and also my own hormone imbalance. I also do weekly facials with a Freeman mask that I get at the grocery or drug store.

The only time I had luck with regular facial for acne was with a very European old school person who had this machine that would literally electrocute the spots. It was even painful.
I broke down and went to dermatologist, who with prescriptions my skin clear. Being on Rx turned out to be cheaper (with insurance) than regular facials.

Hmm . . . I don't have any experience with facials, but I have to tell you that unless you and the doc have found another cause for your late-onset acne, most adult acne is hormonal and hard to clear up without prescriptions.

So, as payback getting through high school and college with perfectly clear skin, my face went berserk a few months after I hit 30. It's fairly mild, but it's persistent, and I'd like for it to calm down. I haven't had great luck getting it back to normal on my own, so I finally broke down and went to a dermatologist today.

He gave me a couple of prescriptions, but I'm not sure I'm ready to medicate for this yet. Has anyone had good luck with regular facials clearing their skin?
