Cipro is the best. The lower-key antibiotics I would try wouldn't ever work and then it would be two weeks of misery while I waited for the sulfa drugs not to work and then could go and get my Cipro.

Anne: I have been given Cipro in the past which as I understand can be considered heavy duty. It worked but few weeks later I had another UTI

I had this problem. My gyn put me on a prophylactic/ish regimen of antibiotics--basically, anytime I wanted to, uh, get busy, I'd pop an antibiotic first, along with all the other usual precautions. However, I did not take an antibiotic every day as part of my morning lineup. I had to add another form of birth control because of the effect on the pill, but it did end up working and I only had to do it for six months or so. That was about seven or eight years ago, and I was UTI-free for a long time thereafter. In the past two years or so, I've had a couple of flare-ups but nothing like the original bad old time. Knock on wood.

Do you use barrier contraception? I've read that those can contribute to recurring UTIs.

Have they ever given you the heavy-duty antibiotics for your UTIs or just the standard varieties?

UGH....I hate these! A few years ago I seemed to have one every time I turned around. Finally I ended up with such a severe one that I needed heavy antibiotics which knocked it out. I did end up with 1 this year after a long trip and not "going" enough I guess. They are so painful and frustrating. They say diabetes can cause them to recur, so maybe get checked for that just to rule it out as a possible cause....

Definitely get your husband checked. I am so sorry you are going through this. This might be a bit woowoo but in the past I did have a couple months of UTIs and I found a tea made of uva ursi (bearberry) and marshmallow root taken for a week worked along with a course of antibiotics. It tastes gross but it worked for me. I am not a doctor, however.

I really have no clue, but I'd would see another doctor, like ironkurtin suggested, just to have a second opinion. I would also ask your hubby to please have a check out, just in case.

From what you say, it's been *only* three months suffering from this. I'm no doctor, but here is my logic guessing: You might not be eating properly lately., or just going through really stressful times, which might affect your defenses and thus make you prone to get small infections. I've heard UTIs are really common in hospitals because patients have low defenses, are not in their best moods and surrounded by bacteria from other patients.

actually, other than my own doctor, I saw several others at urgent care clinics(when i needed to see someone fast) and they all had the same "solutions"-permanent antibiotics or "sorry, don't know what else to tell you" speech

Hm. I'd see another doctor. Surely there is a solution that isn't antibiotics or abstinence. Also, maybe DH should have his doc take a little looksee down there. Takes two to tango.

I never had these until 3 years ago. Antibiotics would work, I would be infection free for a while, then it would come again. Last time I didn't have any UTI for a year until 3 months ago-I had one nearly each month. It seem to happen every time DH and I get intimate. I have done everything my doctor told me-don't hold going to the bathroom, drink tons of water, take cranberry pills, dont' wear tight underwear, pee before and after sex, etc. I just got another one.. This pretty much killed any intimacy between us and I am at my wits end. I have taken some natural supplements(like D Mannose) which work except as soon we have sex, I get it all over again. Does anyone have any suggestions at all? My doctor told me that the only thing she can do is to put me on everyday dose of antibiotics to be taken long term but I really don't want to do that because its very harmful to your health.
