I've never had that difficulty because I've managed to kill every single plant I've had over the past two years. All of my windows face south, so if I try to get them light (or put them outside) they end up frying. I've decided that my guy and the kitties are enough living things for me to take care of for now.

I completely agree with the Freecycle recommendation. I don't like keeping things that I don't use/like, especially if they create more work for me, so anything that can't go to the goodwill goes on Freecycle.

I struggle most with throwing out with those seasonal flowering plants (Easter Lily, Poinsettias, etc.) that lose their spunk, but don't just die off. I have to quickly throw it in the trash right before we take it to the curb.

Yes, I'm soft hearted about plants. I bring home wayward plants from curbs and nurse them back to health. All the Christmas trees on the curbs made me sad, a tree cut down just to be enjoyed for a few weeks! I don't like to thin out seedlings and sometimes even weeding the garden gives me a tinge of guilt! So it's hard for me to let go of a houseplant. Luckily we have Freecycle here so I'm able to give almost everything away. People will nearly always take plants, especially if they're healthy.

Yesterday I FINALLY threw out a house plant I've had for 10 years. This morning I still feel guilty, I guess because it was very much alive. It was a gift from someone I liked but never see anymore, one of those bamboo cuttings growing in a shallow dish with florist glass pebbles holding the roots. It still looked perfectly fine. It was green and growing and healthy. I was just tired of dusting it, periodically washing out the dish and glass pebbles, and having to water it so often, which I'd have to make myself remember to do because it could get very dry without looking wilted. Just writing this makes me feel bad about tossing the whole thing into the trash.

I find that I have trouble throwing out even dying, and ugly, straggly looking house plants.

Anybody else with this issue?
