Aida, this hike was Silver Peak. The trail starts on the K section of the Pacific Crest Trail (accessible via the Hyak exit at Snoqualmie Summit) and then takes a sidetrack.

I hope I'll be able to make this hike again in early fall on a clear day. It was fantastic!

Gorgeous! I'm going hiking soon and am getting back in touch with my gear. My Columbia Sportswear hat is no where near as becoming as your cloche! And congrats on making the climb.

Congrats on the achievement Kari, it looks like a lot of fun! Beautiful photos, which hike/mountain was that? Great call on the cloche, and it adds just the perfect cuteness to the rest of your gear ^^ Even if the mountain wasn't out, you still had a fantastic view

Lynne, thanks for sharing your wisdom. I didn't know that about aspirin, but it makes sense. I've been nursing my poor burned shoulders with aloe vera and lotion, and I've reached the unfortunate itchy, peely stage. Yuck! On my hike, I brought along my SPF 55 and kept re-applying every 45 minutes, and I do think it protected me from being burned any worse.

Janet, it felt like a great accomplishment. I'm just starting to emerge from a low, inactive period where I haven't had any energy, and doing something this physically intense felt *great* and was just what I needed!

Heather, I'm with you. I think the Pacific Northwest missed the "It's summer!" memo until fairly recently. We've only just started to get consistent sun.

Steph, thank you so very much! I definitely do not feel at my most polished in gear, but I've learned that I am a lot more motivated to work out if I at least know that my workout clothes fit well and are not going to be distracting.
Wow, you weren't kidding about the park being snowed in! We had a similar issue, though with less snow, on this trail - we actually "lost" the trail a couple times because of some thick snow fields, but managed to pick it up later after some bushwhacking through the brush. (Hence the scratches and scars that I've been sporting on my shins this week.)

I love that cloche. It's served me well the past two summers, and I really should make an effort to wear hats more often.

Wow, Kari, this is just all round awesome! that's the best part of getting in great shape - you can go be in the most amazing places. Thank you for sharing :)

i'll have to show this to my husband - he loves the mountains and was just up in Lassen a couple of weeks ago. the park was all snowed in, pretty much all of the trails were still snowed over. luckily the rangers knew what to keep clear of snow!!

you also show how to 'style' gear exceptionally well. if you keep your gear pieces all of a piece, or kind of coordinated, then any accessories you choose will really shine and make a statement. and as you show us, Kari, plenty of 'regular' clothing and accessories looks and functions great on the trail. necklaces, bandanas and scarves, socks, tees, and earrings can all offer wonderful style opportunities on the trail if chosen carefully with an eye to function/not getting in the way.

Rock it woman!! love it!!! steph

Not long after your last post, I read in O magazine that if you do get sunburned, it's good to start taking asparin, to stop/slow down the release of prostaglandins, one of the inflammatory compounds that contributes to the redness and swelling. I thought it was a good tip to keep filed away.

I just wanted to share my recent accomplishment, even though it isn't remotely fashion-related. Last weekend, one of my colleagues took me on a really cool hike in the Cascade mountains. Now, I haven't been hiking in a long time, and in fact I haven't even been up on my workout regimen lately due to some health issues. Plus, my feet and hiking boots do not always get along. So I was not only proud for getting through the hike, but for climbing a pretty steep path to the summit, which I'll show you here.

#1 - See that ridge waaaay, way up at the top that's kind of in the clouds? That's where our end goal was.
#2 - We've had an unusually cold summer, so there was a surprising amount of snow on the trail compared to what you'd usually see in August.
#3 - There's a very steep, narrow path along loose rock as you make your way up to the summit. (What you see here, by the way, is only the "false" summit - the actual ridge that we hiked up to is quite a big higher.)
#4 - Hooray!
#5 and 6 - Some of the view. Normally we'd have had an incredible picture window to Mt. Rainier, but unfortunately it was clouded over last weekend. (We have a saying in the Pacific Northwest that "The mountain is out", meaning that it's unusually clear enough to actually see that we have a big mountain on the horizon. Most of the year it's too cloudy to do so.)
#7 - On the way down.

Credit goes to my straw cloche hat from Urban Outfitters, which is normally *not* a gear item, but I was worried about getting a sunburn on my face. It was incredibly comfortable and served me well!
