I haven't seen any of the nominated short documentaries, but I'm a bit perplexed at the connection between "honest sexuality" and the doc film Mother Hart referenced as an example - "Saving Face", the Iraqi film about a spouse who survived an acid attack. That threw me for a moment. Does she mean - the partner must move beyond seeing their love's outer attractiveness? Yes, noble and deep - but isn't this well-revered universal knowledge about all relationships that live through the years? Maybe it's just obvious to some. To me, Mother Hart is praising a "spiritual union" - something that can be attained within, or through a partner, nature, and/or Higher Power. I love that MDH "followed her heart right into the cloister." Obviously she doesn't miss earthly/physical pleasures that drive so many. Wise woman to find her path! I don't think she's on a mission to "reframe" anyone else's sexuality - especially since she's been cloistered for most of her life.

Oooh, will check out that Maureen Dowd interview now - thanks AG!

Mochi, great link! I think your offhand remark about a sultry woman being surprising as a nun hits on the crux of her argument (and it's not about giving up the advantages of her looks) - it's about sexuality, and redefining it.

We tend to define sexuality as carnal, and spirituality (especially within Christianity and Catholicism) as therefore asexual.

This nun is saying her sexuality (a thing partly codified as sultriness) does not end at the convent door. On the contrary, it's expanded.

So Mochi, your comment was completely valid as part of our mainstream discourse about sexuality, and also salient as it holds the key to exactly what Mother Hart is interested in reframing.

...And I'm back (after a long detour)! I appreciate all the thought-provoking comments here, by the way!

After reading the interview in full...wow. No debate in Mother Hart's case. What a lovely, unpretentious woman. She "fell in love with the Lord"! What more is there to understand there? Clear as day, bless her. She's beyond any "two bangs". Hilarious! The funniest part was when she said she didn't get the fuss about this Elvis Presley, a "rock and roller who was just on Ed Sullivan - or Al Sullivan" or something. LOL. I liked that window into her heart. Nice interview - must see this doc!

Thanks for posting the link, Nancy, and, Una, I'll be cheering for your sister at my GF's annual Oscar party on Sunday.

I love what Una said here: "We tend to think of those attributes as something to attain, and instead of looking at other choices as a gain, we think of the results in terms of "giving something up". Not necessarily a good way to think, but a direct product of who we have become as a culture."

In fact, the subject of the film is even more beautiful, because she believed in herself and followed her true nature. This reminds me of a couple of shorts I saw this week on mindfulness in a San Francisco middle school and at a senior center.

After the film, a man commented on aging and our perceptions of the physical (seeing an old person rather than the whole person) as not so much aging, but "experiencing." He said we all only have so many steps we take in life, and how nice to see our lives as ongoing experiences rather than what we have done in our youth. It's a lifetime of experiences, if modern culture didn't have such a powerful way of redefining these things. Wow! There's a lot to think about here on this thread.

It's amazing who nuns do have relationships with! My aunt for one just had her 66th yr anniversary in her order--she has rubbed shoulders and friendships with all kinds of celebrities -actors politicians, sports stars--she surprises me all the time!!! An urban park is even named for her!!!!
Good luck to your sister's film Una!
Very interesting read Mochi---I'm going to send it to my Aunt and see what new surprises come.

Yikes - I should read the interview thoroughly before I delve further into the discussion! Ha - I'm like that - ready to pounce! I just glanced at it and then read Mochi's post, and proceeded to jump in. You're right Una - if it's an extreme case of giving up such wealth and fame...THAT is a fascinating sacrifice. And wow, talk about not giving lip service to the belief that almighty Money and Fame Can't Buy Happiness & Fulfilment, etc., etc. She truly lived that belief - hats off. Now, off to read the entire piece!

Exactly, Una.

And I was thinking of a few examples of girls or young women who made choices to go in the direction of cashing in on their looks (that's a crass term, I realize). One, I remember, was the girl (she really was a girl at the point she was originally cast) who played Tony Soprano's daughter in The Sopranos. (Jamie-Lynn Sigler?) That first season her bio was talking about her desire to go on to become a psychologist specializing in music therapy. (She happens to have a gorgeous singing voice.) It would seem that's completely been dropped and now she's trying to keep her acting career going.

The other was our own Ines's daughter Nine, who had been on the path of studying Ancient Greek or some kind of classics studies, but now appears to be focusing on modeling. I am not sure about her as much; she's still quite young and I can't help but hope that at some point she will continue on with her studies (or go back to focusing on them, if she hasn't completely paused them). Even though it's completely moot and irrelevant to my life, it's just how I react on a gut level.

But clearly, the "advantages" of certain career choices are incredibly tempting, and thus it's as Una said--really amazing when someone intentionally turns his or her back on them.

Well, I'm glad this is generating a discussion, because I think that's an issue the movie is meant to raise... This documentary had a subject precisely because of that conflict - if this had been just any nun, there would be a story just like all human beings have stories, but GIVING UP FAME AND FORTUNE AND SMOOCHING WITH ELVIS? Compelling stuff.

One way to think about it is to think about how we feel about fame and money. It's the same shock we'd possibly feel if a wealthy young man were to cast off his inheritance to become a monk. Beauty, like wealth and fame, is a form of currency in our world, isn't it? We tend to think of those attributes as something to attain, and instead of looking at other choices as a gain, we think of the results in terms of "giving something up". Not necessarily a good way to think, but a direct product of who we have become as a culture.

FWIW, it's not really my viewpoint (actually, I don't think I have any viewpoint), but it's interesting that somewhere in the recesses of my subconscious would be that inchoate feeling. That said, I personally find that when some young woman decides to go and do something like modeling or forego a more rigorous educational/intellectual path for opportunities involving cashing in on their looks, I always feel it's a shame, actually. Even as I know everyone needs to make their own choices.

In any case, not to get too longwinded about it, it's true there are stereotypes and my initial statement fell into line with one...but I also just had the thought that this documentary would not have been made if the woman had been a schoolteacher who decided to become a nun. Yes, the fact that she was a beautiful actress with (I'm assuming) a promising career makes the angle more unusual and intriguing for a lot of people.

As in, "waste" her prettiness? I guess looking at it from a biological view, do we mean she could have attracted a desirable partner and had lots of babies instead (as most women do anyway)? Or made money (temporarily) modelling - but then been forced to find something with more longevity as she aged? Or simply been allowed to bask in catcalls or a few compliments? Eh. That's a pretty high price to pay for abandoning your calling! I agree it's worth more thought. From my end also.

I know, only two degrees. Those two degrees are a lot, though. (I also had a lit professor in grad school who despite his own lack of fame, had amazing A-list friendships--I'm talking Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Steve Martin, etc etc, loads of arty European intellectuals/film directors, major-league artists like Roy Lichtenstein...so I thought on this subject a bit...I know technically it was two degrees between me and Woody, but may as well have been 300!)

I am crossing my fingers for an Oscar win!

Helen, you are absolutely right...and I wasn't trying to imply that nuns are ugly, or "pretty"people can't be spiritual. No cause and effect...it's complicated, but I guess that with looks having such currency in society, it almost is a given that people are expected to take advantage of them, and that usually translates as being out in the secular world...I would have to think more on what I was trying to say, because there's probably more to it than that.

Was signing off on yahoo email when one of the featured articles caught my eye. Yep, this is an interview with the subject of the movie Una's sis edited (and which is up for an Oscar):

http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/.....45357.html

What a looker! It's hard to imagine a woman that sultry becoming a nun :)

I'm admittedly tickled and somehow feel a little more "connected" to the project, heh. Which is silly, but hey. Looking forward to seeing it!
