On a serious note, when I was in high school a girl brought into our history class these small glass plate photos of the aftermath from the Battle of Verdun of the blown apart trenches and countryside littered with the corpses of soldiers. There were 700,000 casualties in that battle alone. Her grandfather was a military medic and took these photographs as he walked the fields, up close and personal. I will never be able to erase these horrific, graphic images from my mind. Our class had been reading All Quiet on the Western Front.
