My skin is a bit sensitive so I use really thich shaving cream. I have also been doing this for about 35 years with no problem. Oddly enough, I switched to waxing exclusively for my legs because shaving was really irritating them, but it's never bothered my armpits. I switched to shaving when I was older and never looked back. For a first-timer, I'd actually recommend an electric shaver over a normal razor, if you're nervous at all. No chance of nicks and cuts that way.
