Oh, Claudia, it's so hard to say. Different ones for different reasons, I think! I'm still discovering shots I had previously overlooked, which is interesting. Some of the ones that grabbed me while we were still on the ship haven't held up as well as some of the ones I've been slower to appreciate. So interesting, because I have had a lot of epiphanies about my work in recent weeks.

But a couple of quick picks that have surprised me with how much I like them:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/j.....1589109159
I struggled while taking this photo and almost didn't bother. Conditions were challenging -- moving ship, shooting against the light, pushing the limits of my "walking around" 28-300mm lens. But after downloading it and doing a little work on it in Lightroom (we're talking about 5 minutes of work), it's one of my favorites from the trip. It's not my usual style -- not a macro, but a fairly straightforward landscape -- but it captures something that gets deep down inside of me. To me, it represents not only awe and complexity, but also perseverance.

This one:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/j.....1589109159
is a recent discovery -- I only really discovered it and started paying attention to it yesterday, and it's resonating with me a lot. I love how there's a bit of an optical illusion in it -- the light part is inside an arch and therefore actually the background, but because it's light, it almost jumps to the foreground when I look at it sometimes.

I'd be curious to know *your* favorite(s)!

Denise, I heard from a few people on the voyage who have been studying and photographing the polar regions that the Arctic glaciers are receding, while the Antarctic ice shelf seems to be growing. In fact, there were some areas we explored on Zodiak where we were in deep open water but could only go so far because the area was officially uncharted as it was covered by ice as recently as two years ago. No one is quite sure what the long term implications of this are.

We also had a couple of Norwegian researchers with our group who study the impacts of oil and gas industry on Arctic wildlife. Sadly, they see a lot of changes, and not for the healthier. The bear pictured is an example -- we were lucky to have caught her post-meal, but she is not very big considering the time of year. She was also over 180 miles from the coast of Greenland! Can you imagine having to go that far from land to find food? We also saw a mama and cub foraging under rocks along a shoreline on Svalbard -- barely finding enough to justify the calories expended, but ya do what ya gotta do.

The polar bear sightings were definitely among some of the most memorable moments of the trip. We have romanticized notions of them, but there's nothing quite like seeing them in the wild, struggle and all.

Thanks for sharing! What an exotic landscape. Is there a lot of evidence of climate change? My brother Conrad is part of a photo project in the Himalayas where he climbs to high places to service, place or move cameras that measure glaciers. The speed of glacial melting in this region is rapid.

The bear is handsome and I'm glad s/he could eat. S/he is not as fat and fluffy as the ones on nature calendars (Nature Conservancy, etc) and I guess they photoshop out the gore for these fundraising freebies.

Thank you so much, Una! The calving glacier was astounding, even at the distance. That was in Svalbard. There had been a smaller one about five minutes earlier, and our Zodiak driver took us a little closer to the glacier, suspecting there might be more. We were not in the absolute best position for it, and my zoom lens only goes to 300mm (my polar bear pics pale in comparison to the guys with the 600mm and 800mm lenses!), but I'm happy I at least got to capture it!

We saw some orcas while at sea, but at enough of a distance that I didn't even try to photograph them. Another time... ;-)

The clouds are exactly as they appeared -- i used a fast shutter speed, as we were on the moving ship, and it was so windy we were hanging onto railings and walls to take photos. I have never seen clouds like that in my life! It was our last night before arriving in Reykjavik, and when we were all exclaiming about how unusual it was, one of our workshop leaders, who is from Iceland, shrugged and grinned and said, "It is Iceland."

Janet, my husband and I looked through these and are in awe. Even living in a place with similar scenery, your photography is so unbelievably beautiful. My husband, who fancies himself an amateur photographer, was just drooling in amazement at the sky and the photo of the calving glacier.

We've been kayaking in Prince William Sound when a glacier calved - the sound was so powerful. Did you see any orcas?

Can't get over the polar bears! And that picture with the clouds - was that with a long exposure, because how is water in focus? Or did they really just look that way even to the eye?

Phenomenal. Thank you so much for sharing them.

Thanks, ladies!

It's going to take some time to really review the photos from the trip, but I'm feeling better about this collection so far than I thought I would. I dare say that I think this was a more successful trip for me photographically than Iceland last year. I was a little nervous -- most of these were taken with a new camera I'd barely tested, and I haven't been shooting much lately, so I felt a little rusty at the beginning of the trip. But we had absolutely outstanding workshop leaders, and my fellow participants were great as well -- I learned a lot, and saw things that blew my mind.

Jonesy, I was astounded by the colors, textures, and forms that ice could take. The aquas, greens, blues were amazing. They were floating sculptures!

Alicat, I am so flattered and pleased at your reaction! I had a very emotional time on this trip, much more so than I ever would have expected. I cannot tell you how many times I felt truly overwhelmed, nearly to the point of tears, with awe and gratitude for the experience. If even a tiny fraction of that comes through in my photos, I am happy.

Oh, my-- those photographs are breathtaking, Janet! The complexity, colors, and textures are amazing. You are so talented to see these images behind the lens and to capture them with such feeling and emotion. I'm sitting here in stunned amazement!

Breathtakingly beautiful, I have a lump in my throat! So moving to see how beautiful nature is, to know that someone can capture it AND to think that that someone is a person I 'know'... it's like "between me and THIS is one person only... one degree of separation".

I fell in love with your style the moment I first saw your photos a while back, but the old truck graveyard sealed it for me. You photograph such amazing abstract patterns, the very things I would (or do, in my imaginary life) be photographing myself. It really is overwhelming to look at these photos.

My son just walked by when I was looking at the photo of the glacier calving and he was thoroughly impressed.

It really is a privilege to see your photos! Thank you for sharing.
